Published by BJE Music (A0.750927). I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In) is a traditional and popular Christmas carol from England. The earliest printed version of I Saw Three Ships is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William Sandys in 1833. The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, but the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea about 20 miles (32 km) away. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Another possible reference is to Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia, who bore a coat of arms Azure three galleys argent. Another suggestion is that the ships are actually the camels used by the Magi, as camels are frequently referred to as ships of the desert. Storm and Calm is a piece that I composed after hearing that two of my friends were fighting and I was being pulled both ways in the conversation. I felt very conflicted about the whole situation, and I tried my best to vent those confused feelings through the music that I was hearing during all of it. I was amazed at what transpired when they both heard the piece, as it seemed to bring them to a new understanding of sorts, getting them to see how their conflict had begun to damage those around them. While I try not to dwell on what the piece evolved from, it's a constant reminder that even the biggest problems can result in the most miraculous of solutions.

Promises, Promises is a musical with music by Burt Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David and a book by Neil Simon, based on the 1960 film 'The Apartment' written by Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond. The story concerns a junior executive at an insurance company who seeks to climb the corporate ladder by allowing his apartment to be used by his married superiors for trysts. The song 'Promises, Promises' happens right towards the end of the musical where things pretty much have fallen apart, made perfectly clear in the music by very agitated meter changes and angular harmonies. Released in 1968, the song was featured on an album by Dionne Warwick shortly before the musical debuted on Broadway and has since been covered by other artists, including Sean Hayes as part of the 2010 revival production.

Published by G. Meredith Publications (A0.1501543). This orchestration is the end product of my book entitled Orchestrational Archetypes in Percy Grainger's Wind Band Music. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style. I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer). Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904. The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration. The lyrics of the first verse are: Adieu, madame, my mother dear,But and my sisters three O!Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,My heart is woe for thee, O!Adieu, the lily and the rose,The primrose fair to see, O!Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,For I may not stay with thee, O!.

The title Fairy Tale Mystery is a combination of ideas submitted by students from each of the schools. The cover art was designed by Armstrong Jr. HS student Eliza Major. Joseph Hasper #753375. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134). There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

A triumphant fanfare for bands with a strong brass section! When I spoke with Ian about writing another piece for us, I suggested a fanfare - an easy idea when you have 26 players in the brass section. After receiving an electronic version of the piece, I realized it loosely followed the musical form known as a rondo. The opening fanfare returns four times in the piece, while the primary melody returns three times after its initial statement. Each return is different than the original statement. A third, darker theme in the lower voices, is played twice in the piece, which offers a nice contrast to the opening fanfare and primary theme. Thus, Fanfare and Rondo seemed like an apt title for the work. - Mr. Michael Hintzman The Northwestern High School Band would like to thank the Oulu Community Theater for their financial support in the commissioning of Fanfare and Rondo. Published by The Beat Sellery (A0.971672). This piece was originally written for an ensemble of 18 students to give them something that would engage and/or challenge each player. I wanted to expose them to shifting meters and relied on a minimalist idea for building the groove that drives the piece. It is important to maintain a feeling of motion throughout. The percussion section will be kept busy moving between instruments, and they are featured in the middle-it should sound like magic sparkles. I added traditional instrumentation to this, and there is some writing more difficult than grade 3 (particularly in the oboe part since originally there was no flute). Still, I think it is a fun piece for the right group. The meter is mostly 5/8 with the occasional 6/8 or 4/8 thrown in. The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. The download includes the full score and set of parts. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be.
