Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.1182001). Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was the only woman to hold a professorship at a European Conservatory (Paris) in the 19th Century.  They would only allow her to teach piano, not composition, because she was undeniably a virtuoso pianist.  During her lifetime she mainly composed for piano, but also wrote works for the orchestra, including three symphonies, and a great deal of mixed chamber music. She wrote no works for wind band of any kind, yet she lived in a golden age of especially French band music. As such, I felt a new generation of music students should hear the music of this incredibly talented composer who had the misfortunate of being born female in the 19th Century. This work is certainly characteristic of the Romantic Era and would make a lovely concert overture. the main sub ject of her variations is Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God. If you purchase this score (and like it), please write to me at debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc and I will send you a copy of the wav file as well as a link to her original piano work (I;'ve not taken too many liberties). If you still like it, parts may be had for $100 via Venmo or personal check. Write to debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc..

Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) wrote this as a piece for piano (4-hands) in the 1880s after attending a performance of Tristan and Isolde in Munich. Chabrier had been moved to tears by Richard Wagner's romantic music drama, but when Chabrier returned home to Paris, he wrote this burlesque, a pastiche of the various themes from the opera. It was a curious thing to do, because instead of writing a tribute to Wagner's masterpiece, it was as if he instead squirted Wagner in the face with a seltzer bottle. Wagner's champion, Hans von Bülow, became enraged when he heard Chabrier perform the parody, but Wikipedia reports that Francis Poulenc described Souvenirs de Munich as irresistibly funny, where Wagner's principal themes appear with false beards and fake moustaches.This arrangement for wind band is greatly simplified from the original piano piece to make it more playable. Still, bands will find it a challenge, although instrumentalists and audiences both are certain to enjoy this clever novelty from La Belle �poque.

Gioacchino Rossini composed the music 1835 originally for solo voice and piano. It is part of his song cycle Les soirées musicales with twelve pieces by various poets. This version was orchestrated and arranged in the key of A minor as prefered by prominent tenors like Luciano Pavarotti. It was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2017 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria. The solo part was sung by Thai born tenor Nutthaporn Thammathi. Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1487841). The Kaiser Walzer (Emperor Waltz) is one of most famous pieces of this genre and perhaps the one with the most pronounced symphonic character. It was written for the opening of the Berlin concert hall Königsbau on 19 October 1889. The first performance in Vienna took place on 11 November 1889 by his competitor Carl Michael Ziehrer, who made his own instrumentation along a piano edition. Strauss disliked that very much. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra. Is was two times performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2010 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and 2018 also broadcasted live by Austrian television. Born in Sydney in 1881, the seventh child of a wealthy family, Kelly was educated at Sydney Grammar School before being sent to England where he attended Eton College and Oxford University. At Eton his musical talents were nurtured under the tutelage of Dr Charles Harford Lloyd. He also developed a passion for rowing, eventually winning a gold medal for England in the 1908 London Olympics. After graduating from Oxford, Kelly began five years of musical study in piano and composition at the Hoch Conservatorium in Frankfurt, Germany. He made his professional debut as a pianist in Sydney in 1911. His London debut followed in 1912. His career was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War.Elegy for String Orchestra In Memoriam Rupert Brooke was written during his war service in the final year of his life. It is an accomplished and moving work in the English pastoral style of the time, its lush modal string-writing sounding not unlike his famous English near-contemporary Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). In the Australian context it stands out as a mature and beautiful musical statement by an Australian composer in relation to actual personal experiences of the tragedy of the First World War. As such it's unique in the Australian classical canon, and also part of that wider generational tragedy of what might have been if such an accomplished composer had lived on to create music into his old age. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723039). This is a patriotic Russian (Czarist) piece written in 1915. It describes the Imperial Russian naval vessel Slava (Glory) on patrol. While supposedly written for military wind orchestra, no known copy for band exists. The only copy is a version arranged for piano four-hands by Konstantin Chernov in the Russian State Library. Slava is a programmatic work that starts with a patriotic hymn, a bugle call to duty, on patrol, a bugle call to quarters, dangerous seas, a bugle call to secure from quarters, and a triumphant return to Mother Russia. This arrangement was made at the request of Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, CA. It was premiered on May 16, 2014, at Wilson Jr. H.S. by the Imperial High School Tiger Band, Brooke Kofford directing. The work is moderately difficult, mainly because of the use of double flats.
