The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Subsequent research has concluded that the wind piece Brahms used as a source does not fit Haydn’s style. The famous theme and one of the variations explore the subtle contrast between bassoon and English horn. The original repeats are opened up and scored differently, using contrasting colors and combinations of solo clarinet, solo flute, piccolo, and soprano saxophone. A repeated section first has a flute and oboe accompanied with clarinets, then a saxophone quartet on the repeat. One variation features a solo piccolo and bells. And a prominent pair of horns recalls the sound of Haydn's divertimenti for wind ensemble. Duration: approx. 6:00. Written for an adult community band, this challenging arrangement is appropriate for a university, college, or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. The bassoon, English horn, and soprano saxophone parts are all fully cued to allow rehearsal or performance in the absence of any or all of them. Two strong horn players are essential; but the third and fourth horn parts are easier, and cued in trombones and euphonium. The bassoon parts use the tenor clef and ascend to a high B-flat; the second bassoon has only one 8-measure high passage that doubles the horns and can be omitted if necessary. The alternate versions of both bassoon parts use only bass clef but are otherwise identical. This movement model has since been used by composers again and again as a model for a number of variation works.On the other hand, the composition consists of a motif of 5 notes (F-Bb-E-F-Gb), which recurs in different constellations throughout the work.After the opening, the folia theme is heard in the form used by Antonio Salieri in his 26 variations.The composition proceeds through many variations of the folia, combined with variations of the opening motif, and passes through many different emotional moments. Joy is marred by brute interjections. There is fear of the unknown and at the same time curiosity and anticipation. A rollercoaster of emotions for 13 minutes until the work closes with the opening motif.

This is my response to one that I worked with for a bit, a series of variations with one humorous section containing some autobiographical material.
