PROGRAM NOTE: Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert of Premieres each May. He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year. Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart). The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old. The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D, two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum. I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas, bass drum, and glockenspiel. As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for young, less experienced players. I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is probably the one which will probably need to be played. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723171). In 1817, James Hewitt set Francis Scott Key's poem The Defence of Fort M'Henry (which we now better know as The Star Spangled Banner). Hewitt's original song gained some local popularity; however, throughout most of the country, people began singing the poet's words to a popular drinking song then known to many Americans, English composer John Stafford Smith's To Anacreon in Heaven (originally written for a popular gentleman's club of amateur musicians in London, the Anacreontic Society). Whereas John Stafford Smith's music was borrowed for the poem, Hewitt's music was especially composed for the poem. I was asked by Mitch Sturman, the band director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, to arrange the original piano music for his band to play at his annual spring Concert of Premieres where he presented new works he had commissioned for his band from well-known band composers, and arrangements of neglected works he felt were worthy of performance. This was one of those neglected worthy pieces by an American composer for an American poem. It is orchestrated for flute, oboe, clarinets 1-3, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, bassoon, French horn, trumpets 1-2, baritone horn, trombone, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, and glockenspiel. .

The final version features additional lyrics by McCartney. Lennon's voice was extracted from the demo using the machine-learning-assisted audio restoration technology commissioned by Peter Jackson for his 2021 documentary The Beatles: Get Back. The song has been released on 2 November 2023 on a double A-side single, paired with a new stereo remix of the band's first single, Love Me Do (1962). Both songs were included on the expanded re-issues of the 1973 compilations 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, released on 10 November 2023. It topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria, and reached the top ten in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to stay updated on new releases.

Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723039). This is a patriotic Russian (Czarist) piece written in 1915. It describes the Imperial Russian naval vessel Slava (Glory) on patrol. While supposedly written for military wind orchestra, no known copy for band exists. The only copy is a version arranged for piano four-hands by Konstantin Chernov in the Russian State Library. Slava is a programmatic work that starts with a patriotic hymn, a bugle call to duty, on patrol, a bugle call to quarters, dangerous seas, a bugle call to secure from quarters, and a triumphant return to Mother Russia. This arrangement was made at the request of Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, CA. It was premiered on May 16, 2014, at Wilson Jr. H.S. by the Imperial High School Tiger Band, Brooke Kofford directing. The work is moderately difficult, mainly because of the use of double flats.

It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferrybarges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fishto provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to beso in the future. The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, thisrepresents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is alinear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you canpicture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. Thesecond strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Triorepresents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have feltknowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts thatwere put forth to secure the land and build a community. There would have been many triumphs and manysuccesses, but the journey would have not been easy. The final strain is the culmination of the piece. This is thecelebration and the feeling of personal nobility that all of the settlers felt after taking a river and dirt and building acity. I hope you enjoy, The Palatka Port March!

In 1882, Sir Edward Elgar jotted down in his musical notebook a piano piece he titled Douce Pensée (Sweet Thought). There it remained until 1913 when he got it out again, revised it slightly, re-titled it Rosemary - That's for remembrance, and published it for the first time. The title comes from Ophelia's Garland Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where she says, There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra.
