This two-measure pattern ends differently every other time, creating a four-measure pattern that occurs throughout and never changes! All students (except the shaker) play this pattern at the very beginning, establishing the basis for the entire arrangement.Only six notes are used. Students’ familiarity with the music will be an asset as they tackle a melody that may be a new challenge to them. With this in mind, the melody is always doubled or cued elsewhere; no section will ever have to play it alone. There are four opportunities for either a soloist or a soli of any combination! These occur at bars 21, 25, 49 and 53.  Have fun with these spots, giving everyone an opportunity. It will, of course, need to be mapped out for a performance. Students will shout the Bluey characters’ names just like the show’s theme. There is one spot to insert a name of your choosing - a student, teacher, administrator, family member, or pet! Alternatively, you can replace any of the character’s names to truly personalize the song. I hope you and your students enjoy learning and performing Bluey!

Abraham’s Daughter: March from the Civil War ♫ by Septimus Winter (1861) ♫ with When Johnny Comes Marching Home by Patrick Gilmore a.k.a. Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,†and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.†♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter†in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter†pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns†“Listen to the Mockingbird†and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?†♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. The volunteers are a-pouring in From every loyal quarter, And I'm goin' down to Washington To fight for Abraham's daughter. ♫ At the beginning of the war, the majority of soldiers, North and South, were fighting to uphold their view of government, each side justifying its position by quoting the Constitution. Southern States saw each State as a sovereign, independent nation. Abraham Lincoln insisted that the United States were one nation. For Abraham Lincoln, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union. The hymns are scored in four parts and could be used with virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments. They are presented in a set of three books and include full four-part instrumental scores plus separate parts in a variety of useful transpositions. Parts 1 and 2 (soprano and alto) are provided in B flat, E flat and C (8ve higher than concert); Part 3 (tenor) in B flat (9th above concert), E flat, F and C (bass clef) and Part 4 (bass) in B flat, E flat and C. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It's around the turn of the 20th century and the young lassies from the many farms and villages from the glens surrounding Peebles, leave their homes to come and enjoy the festival - 'To gather on the village green and hail the festal day' 'Lassies blooming fresh and fair cam liltin’ doon the glen' - they pause for breath now and again and as they join their friends along the way, the dance intensifies into a mazurka style. At the fanfares herald the many compliments they get from 'Huntsman gallant and sheperds grey, doughtyand blythsome men' they encounter along the way. It culminates with all the lassies getherin' at the Mercat Cross.

While created in open scoring for beginning and young instrumentalists, these pieces could be used by anyone. They are accessible with as few as two players and as many as are available in almost any combination of instruments. The folk melodies are also excellent to use as warm-ups because they can serve the purpose while also providing aesthetic value. The teacher is encouraged to be flexible and creative with them. Directors are encouraged to perform these in various combinations and sets. Feel free to be creative. For example, repeats could be added featuring various soloists and/or small groupings in contrast with the full group (as in a concerto.) Creativity could be promoted by allowing students to make suggestions pertaining to the formal organization of the material. In addition to decisions as to which pieces to perform directors are encouraged to involve students in making creative decisions such as which ones to put together, which phrases to repeat in various combinations and instrumental subsets and other appropriate aesthetic decisions. Each piece could function as a locus for branching into various content areas in connection with social studies, integrated curriculum and/or inquiry. Many of the melodies have very smooth and conjunct voice leading making them excellent for solfege/sight-reading training. These melodies are offered as a resource for the teacher to use in a variety of ways and possibilities are unlimited. Lyrics are readily available online.

Katydids create a loud, raspy, three-pulsed song by rubbing their front wings together. They sing to each other in the trees at night, with a continuous ka-ty-did.Dance of the Katydids begins by imitating their sound, using the gourd with scratcher. After the intro, one katydid starts the dance, and more and more join in. The katydids(the gourd) continue to the end of the dance. The composer hopes this piece won't bug anybody!All parts are written within the range of young elementary grade musicians. To produce a full sound, many instruments double other instruments, i.e. Eb sax and French horn, low brass and tenor sax, flute and oboe. This included patriotic concerts held across Australia during 1914. The first of these was a patriotic concert held at the School of Arts, South Grafton, New South Wales, on Tuesday 1 September 1914. A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Sherman) and featured in the 1964 motion picture Mary Poppins. The song speaks of an old beggar woman (the Bird Woman) who sits on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral, selling bags of breadcrumbs to passers-by for two pence a bag (equivalent to about 13p in 2022) so that they can feed the many pigeons which surround the old woman. The scene is reminiscent of the real-life seed vendors of Trafalgar Square who began selling birdseed to passers-by shortly after its public opening in 1844.

Dame Ethel Mary Smyth DBE (22 April 1858 – 8 May 1944) was an English composer and a member of the women's suffrage movement. Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works and operas.Smyth tended to be marginalised as a ‘woman composer’ as though her work could not be accepted as mainstream. Yet when she produced more delicate compositions, they were criticised for not measuring up to the standard of her male competitors. Nevertheless, she was granted a damehood, the first female composer to be so honoured.The Wreckers is an opera in three acts, composed by Dame Ethel Smyth to a libretto in French by Henry Brewster. After spending considerable energy in trying to get the work performed in French, the first performance took place in a German translation by John Bernhoff, under the title of Strandrecht, at the Neues Theater, Leipzig on 11 November 1906. Smyth persisted in her attempts to see it staged elsewhere, but it was not until the conductor Thomas Beecham championed the work that a complete, staged performance was achieved in England in 1909 with funding support from her friend Mary Dodge.  The Overture has been arranged for wind band, and the PDF contains the full score and a full set of parts.

I’D RATHER BE BLUE, THINKING OF YOU (than be happy with somebody else) was originally recorded by pioneering American songstress Fanny Brice in 1929. Since then it was featured in her biography “Funny Girl†when it was sung (and danced on roller-skates!) by Barbra Streisand. This is a FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRATION which implies that it is intended for community bands, bands in small schools, club bands etc. and can be played, not only by full bands or orchestras but by incomplete bands and bands that are made up of almost any mixture of instrument that you can imagine. To achieve this, the music is made up of five “Parts†or voices which are defined by pitch and key e.g. Part II Bb – Trumpet, Clarinet, Tenor saxophone etc. To those five are added additional parts for percussion, tuned percussion, piano and voice. I should mention here that, besides regular band or orchestral instruments, it is possible to include less used instruments such as harmonica, piano-accordion, ukulele, electric guitar – the list is endless! Lastly, it is possible to use flexible orchestrations for chamber groups of any size. They can be chosen by instrument family e.g. Woodwind quintet, or by particular instrument e.g. Clarinet Trio.
