Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London on August 15, 1875 and died from pneumonia at the age of 37 in Croy- don, England on September 1, 1912. At an early age his grandfather began teaching him how to play the violin. His musical ability was obvious and at the age of 15, his extended family arranged for Taylor to study at the Royal College of Music. While at RCM he changed from violin to composition, working under professor Charles Villiers Stanford. His classmates included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. He was later helped by Edward Elgar in 1898, who described Coleridge-Taylor as far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men. By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was earning a reputation as a composer and was also accepted as an excellent conductor. In 1898 at the age of 23 he composed the African Suite. Danse Nègre is the last of the four movements that make up the African Suite, Op. 35 (proceeded by Introduction, A Negro Love Song, and Valse). Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man. He was greatly influenced by black American poet P. L. Dunbar. He made three successful visits to the United States to great acclaim. In 1904, on his first USA tour he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Above all, though, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as a man of great dignity and patience.

The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Subsequent research has concluded that the wind piece Brahms used as a source does not fit Haydn’s style. His full name was Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppè. He is regarded as father of the Viennese operetta. As he very often composed on bad quality librettos, most of his operettas nowadays are no more performed on stage. But many of his overtures and melodies are still popular, like this overture to the operetta Ein Morgen, ein Mittag, ein Abend in Wien (Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna), which was first performed in Vienna in February 1844. The original cello solo starting at bar 14was transcribed in this arrangement to the bass clarinet, as it is the only wind instrument in this score covering the range of the cello's solo part. There are also alternatives for clarinet (as in the orchestral score) or flugelhorn combined with euphonium. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg and first performed conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their 2014 New Year's Concert on January 6th in Salzburg, Austria. Both were famous musicians and members of the Vienna Philharmonic as violonists, the son also as conductor with a preceding carreer as military bandmaster. He was also a highly talented composer. The Valse espagnole is an intermezzo from his ballet The Pearl of Iberia, which was premiered in 1902 at the Vienna Court Opera. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg and first performed conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their 2014 New Year's Concert on January 6th in Salzburg, Austria. Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1021849). Julius FuÄÃk (1872 - 1916) was a famous Austrian-Hungarian military bandmaster, who composed more than 400 pieces during his short lifetime. First of all he was known as a king of marches: His Florentiner March and Entry of the Gladiators had worldwide success, but also some of his overtures and waltzes became very popular. His concert march Under the Admiral's Flag was composed in 1911and had its first performance, when the Austrian-Hungarian battleship Viribus unitis premiered its launching in the former Austrian military habour of Pula in Istria. This arrangement keeps the key of the symphony orchestra version, while most band arrangements transpose a whole tone lower. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg and first performed conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their 2014 New Year's Concert on January 6th in Salzburg, Austria.
