My Funny Valentine was written for the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart coming of age musical 'Babes in Arms'. The song became a popular jazz standard, appearing on over 1300 albums performed by over 600 artists. One of them was Chet Baker, for whom it became his signature song; in 2015 the Gerry Mulligan quartet's 1953 version of the song (featuring Chet Baker) was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry for its cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy. The description of the male character of Valentine in the show was consistent with Lorenz Hart's own insecurities and belief that he was too short and ugly to be loved; consequently, the lyrics are sufficiently gender-neutral to allow the song to be sung about a person of any gender. This concert band arrangement has been produced from the jazz ensemble version by Michael Sweeney, created in 1988.

In 1905, the actor and playwright Maurice de Féraudy put lyrics on this music. This music was adapted to the 1957 Billy Wilder film, Love in the afternoon, with stars Gary Cooper, Audrey Hepburn and Maurice Chevalier. The version proposed here uses a solo instrument: Flugelhorn (or Cornet or Trumpet) or Euphonium.

Published by Seolta Music Limited (A0.1396932). Lament for Youth is a beautiful Irish arrangement by J.F. Larchet, one of Ireland's most celebrated composers. The piece starts with a slow air entitled 'My Gentle Harp' followed by a lively dance tune 'The Galway Reel'. Larchet combines these two tunes with great artistry in a rousing final section. This arrangement of Larchet's orchestral piece was made by Colonel W. F. Brase, a distinguished German bandmaster who became the first Director of the Irish Army School of Music in 1923.

Symphonic Suite is a six-movement composition with a motto theme (actually a short motif) that appears in each movement and provides the basis for much of the thematic content that is developed later one.While the 2nd movement conjures up some Bartókian night music (hence the title Nocturne), its primary inspiration was the Symphony for Band of Vincent Persichetti, and the title Symphonic Suite pays homage to that work, in addition to referencing a great deal of symphonic development of the short motto motif that begins the composition. The keystone center movement is named Elegy in honor of Persichetti, who passed away in 1986, as is the dedication of the entire composition. Although this piece is cast in a different form, and does not try to imitate Persichetti's style, a couple very obvious nods to his symphony can be noticed in this suite.The six movements are: 1. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904. The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration. The lyrics of the first verse are: Adieu, madame, my mother dear,But and my sisters three O!Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,My heart is woe for thee, O!Adieu, the lily and the rose,The primrose fair to see, O!Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,For I may not stay with thee, O!.
