The journey across the Wild West was full of hardship, peril, and loss This song battles the very real struggles with levity and humor. It was first published in 1858.“Git Along, Little Dogies†is a cowboy ballad, also known as “Whoopie Ti Yi Yoâ€. While likely older, the first mention of the song was in author Owen Wister’s 1893 journal. It was first published in 1910. “Dogies†is a reference to small or orphaned calves. The narrative of the song quotes a cowboy singing to the slow or stray dogies as they move along the cattle drive to Wyoming.“Rock Island Line†refers the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad company (established 1947) which soon after became the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. When construction of the railroad arrived at Rock Island in 1854, it became the first to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. This folk song references an encounter between an operator of a toll gate and a train engineer who is let through without paying by lying about his payload. Once safely through, he yells back his confession as the train speeds onward. The earliest known version of the song was published in 1929.Grade 3.5 Performance time: 10:00.

Written in 1953, the song has been recorded by many artists, incluing Ella Fitzgerald, 101 Strings, Dewey Redman, Chicago and Nancy Wilson. Johnny Mercer was often asked to write lyrics to already popular songs; the yrics to Satin Doll were written after the song was a hit in its instrumental version. This arrangement has been adapted from the jazz ensemble version by John Edmondson, retaining a short trumpet solo and incorporating the piano parts into the clarinets and vibraphone. 'Street Player' is the opening track on Chicago 13, the eleventh studio album by American rock band Chicago, released on August 13, 1979, by Columbia Records. The song is a cover, having previously been performed by Rufus and didn't chart very highly, although the album eventually was certified Gold. It is primarily known as being sampled for the 1995 hit The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall into My Mind) by The Bucketheads, the 2009 hit I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) by Pitbull and the 2013 remix by dance music producer Tradelove. The original recording featured a long trumpet solo by Maynard Ferguson; this arrangement, however, has been shortened, although still packing a punch with its distinctive brass lines - it should still be accessible to most bands with some careful rehearsal to get the rhythms together and should be a sure-fire hit with your audience.

Florence Price(b Little Rock, AR, 9 April 1887; d Chicago, IL, 3 June 1953) was the first African American woman to win widespread recognition as a symphonic composer, rising to prominence (with William Grant Still and William Dawson) in the 1930s. After early training with her mother she studied composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Wallace Goodrich and Frederick Shepherd Converse (1903–6) and privately with George Whitefield Chadwick. She gained an Artist’s Diploma (organ) and a piano teacher’s diploma.  In her large-scale works Price’s musical language is often conservative, in keeping with the Romantic nationalist style of the 1920s–40s, but it also reflects the influence of her cultural heritage and the ideals of the “Harlem renaissance†of the 1920s–30s. To her art songs and piano music she brought a thorough knowledge of instrumental and vocal writing, colorful harmonies and exotic modulations.The Oak from 1943 was originally written for orchestra and has been transcribed for concert band. The PDF contains the full score and full set of parts.

After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements. Composed in 1943, about 10 years before her death, 'The Oak' is an unpublished tone poem, perhaps more appropriately described as an 'orchestral essay', quite serious in tone and character. The foreboding opening slowly grows as more instruments enter the mix. The piece explores a number of different moods and atmospheres, from mysterious to more aggressive and irritated. Arranged for symphonic wind ensemble, 'The Oak' is a major contribution to the repertoire and deserves detailed attention - there are two different endings, the second, one that resolves quietly, is written in the score as 'the composer's preference'.

She learned scat singing from her father and a love of jazz from his record collection, and she learned classical music from her mother. 'Christmas Lullaby' was recorded by Barbra Streisand in 2001 and is featured on her album 'Christmas Memories', it was later recorded by Callaway herself and has also been covered by Ronan Tynan. This version for concert band features a solo vocal, but options for Alto Sax or Flugelhorn are provided, making it a really flexible option, providing a calmer moment within a holiday concert. The Young Oak March was composed by Lithuanian composer Kazys DaugÄ—la (b. 1960) in 1989 for the first international festival Trimitas held in the city of Vilnius. The spirit of the march reflects the hopeful mood of the long-depressed people of Lithuania. The melody near the midpoint is taken from the Lithuanian folk song The Young Oak Grew in the Forest, which is with 3/4 and 2/2 meters, but as for marching everything goes symmetrically. In this context the young oak refers to a young man whose mother wanted him to be a ploughman, not a soldier. But as the text continues, if you haven't been a soldier, you can't be a good ploughman.The Young Oak - a popular patriotic march in Lithuania composed during the Lithuanian revival. It is often performed by military bands during Lithuanian statehood celebrations and festivals. The Young Oak March was composed by Lithuanian composer Kazys DaugÄ—la (b. 1960) in 1989 for the first international festival Trimitas held in the city of Vilnius. The spirit of the march reflects the hopeful mood of the long-depressed people of Lithuania. The melody near the midpoint is taken from the Lithuanian folk song The Young Oak Grew in the Forest, which is with 3/4 and 2/2 meters, but as for marching everything goes symmetrically. In this context the young oak refers to a young man whose mother wanted him to be a ploughman, not a soldier. But as the text continues, if you haven't been a soldier, you can't be a good ploughman. The Young Oak - a popular patriotic march in Lithuania composed during the Lithuanian revival. It is often performed by military bands during Lithuanian statehood celebrations and festivals.
