The song is sung from the perspective of children who, upon seeing the Christ Child, ask “What should we give to the Child of the Mother?†First they choose their best-tasting foods: raisins, figs, walnuts and olives; then, a blanket for warmth from the cold. Finally, angels descend from Heaven to cradle the Child, singing “songs of glory that are not of the world.â€The carol may date from 18th-century Catalonia, which is today an autonomous community of Spain lying mostly on the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with Barcelona — Spain's second-most populous city — as its capital.The Spanish guitar master Andres Segovia (1893-1987) often performed Miguel Llobet's (1878-1938) transcription of this simple, lovely tune as an encore.This arrangement is an ideal vehicle to teach lyrical playing and legato style; dynamic control and the shaping of phrases; and the “handing-off†of phrases and phrase segments from one section to another to sustain and complete a musical idea. Published by KyleMac Music (A0.1215499). Gene Autry, the Singing Cowboy, made this song famous in 1949. Based upon a book by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May, Marks wanted to put the popular 1939 Montgomery Ward story into song. Johnny Marks, a decorated World War II hero, wrote several popular Christmas songs besides Rudolph. The song’s translation into several languages even had an effect on Finnish Christmas tradition – Rudolph is now head of Joulupukki’s sleigh (the Finnish Santa)! The only difference is that the Finnish reindeer don’t fly.This arrangement has a fun swing style to it. Harmonization is slightly more advanced from a Grade I tune, but the rhythms and ranges are very approachable for young musicians. The style lets them experience a standard swing feel.The percussion is written for a drum set but can be separated as a traditional part for concert band. Sleighbells can have as many players as you want. I often had children come from the audience and give them little toy sleigh bells to play. When instrumentation is less than ideal or when fewer performers are available, flexible scoring options can help provide solutions. Many flexible scoring selections can be performed with as few as four like-instruments. While this flex-scoring selection can be performed by a quartet of like-instruments, the most successful configuration is with at least five heterogeneous wind instruments, plus some percussion. The full score has been revised and groups instruments in an easier to read format. This arrangement has been written to provide a light-hearted touch of humor to these familiar seasonal songs. From the polka-like countermelodies to the hint of a galloping, overly zealous horse, the intent is merriment during the Christmas Season. While horse-drawn sleighs bring to mind images of a bygone age, the melodies are as welcome today as ever!
