Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1374473). Margaret Ada Sutherland (20 November 1897 – 12 August 1984) was an Australian composer, among the best-known female musicians her country has produced. A student of Sir Arnold Bax in London during the 1920s, Sutherland wrote pieces in almost all forms, but particularly concentrated on the genre of chamber music. Her major works include a symphony, concertos for various instruments, a symphonic poem entitled Haunted Hills (1953), and a chamber opera. A severe stroke in 1969 ended her composing career. This short 'Movement' is subtitled 'Canzonetta' and dates from 1959. Arranged from the original hand-drawn orchestral manuscript as part of a project to expand the worldwide repertoire of music by women composers for concert band.

In 1882, Sir Edward Elgar jotted down in his musical notebook a piano piece he titled Douce Pensée (Sweet Thought). There it remained until 1913 when he got it out again, revised it slightly, re-titled it Rosemary - That's for remembrance, and published it for the first time. The title comes from Ophelia's Garland Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where she says, There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra. INSTRUMENTATION: Flute I (4), Flute II (4), Oboe (1), Clarinet I (4), Clarinet II (4), Clarinet III (4), Bass Clarinet (1), Bassoon (1), Alto Saxophone (4), Tenor Saxophone (2), Baritone Saxophone (1); Trumpet I (3), Trumpet II (3), French Horn (2), Baritone Horn T.C. A Mohigan Band Overture  was commissioned by the Morgantown High School Band, in Morgantown, WV in January 2022, honoring their upcoming 100 year anniversary of the band program.  Through the last century, the band has been featured in many national appearances, including, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.  This stylistic dramatic piece is built on the architecture of an overture in musical theater, or a ballet.  Overture, meaning “opening†is usually an instrumental piece at the beginning of the show performed by the orchestra.  Overtures usually contain bits and pieces of tunes which are heard during the opera or ballet.  It prepares the audience for what is to come.   This piece does the same.  It contains four songs which are iconic to Morgantown High School and their band program.  Those songs are the Morgantown High School Pep Song, The Morgantown High School Alma Mater, God Has Created A New Day (sung during their band camp at breakfast time), The Johnny Appleseed Song (sung during lunch time at their band camp).  These four songs represent a plethora of memories for the students and directors of the program.  Even included is a small musical kick line, a nod towards the Mohiganettes and Majorettes of the Morgantown High School Band.

The first movement begins with a percussion fanfare that leads into woodwind melodies coupled with the euphonium. Then the percussion takes over again, with a timpani solo feature. The second movement is a dialogue between the clarinet and brass choirs. As the choir masses become more dense, a plaintive solo oboe emerges from the din … molto cantabile!!! The third movement is a scherzo featuring the trumpets and the woodwinds. The percussion section joins in with outbursts and commentaries … The brass choir returns in the last movement with more melodies emanating from the woodwinds. The work ends in quiet tranquility … molto cantabile again!!! The work is dedicated to the effervescent Bill Drury who conducts the wind ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. I was very grateful to Bill when he asked me to write something for him and the Jordan Winds at NEC. It is a huge challenge to compose music for large wind groups. I find most concert band pieces too thick and mucky in texture. The trick is to create concert band music that is light and transparent; to orchestrate in such a way that you can see/hear light seeping through. I hope I was able to do that. Enjoy!! Kristenmark Overture was commissioned and composed for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of the University of Minnesota Duluth, Mark Whitlock conductor and the Symphony Band of the University of Wisconsin River Falls, Kristin Tjornehoj, conductor.The name Kristinmark are the first names of both conductors.It has been played many times in Europe, South America and the United States. It is often used in honor band festivals as it fits the level of difficulty (grade 4) for the average high school band festival and good duration for such events – seven minutes. The piece is in a clear Sonata Allegro form and includes short solos for trombone, horn, alto sax, trumpet, timpani, snare drum, tuba, oboe, crotales, flute, piccolo, bassoon, euphonium and clarinet. Non of the solos are very long or difficult. The solos are meant to feature as many musicians as possible. In some cases, alternate instruments have cues if particular instrumentalists are not strong performers . The solo repertoire for bass clarinet, though growing, is still quite sparse when compared to other wind instruments. This is especially true for solo concertos or other solo works with orchestra, band, or wind ensemble. The present arrangement adds a significant piece by a great Romantic composer to the bass clarinet repertoire.Originally for solo cello with orchestra, Élégie fits perfectly into the extended range of the modern bass clarinet (just two low Ds are called for). The solo part is challenging, while the accompaniment parts are easily accessible. The arrangement calls for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 4 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, and 1 string bass (or alternatively, contrabassoon), in addition to the soloist.Enjoy the mp3 of a live performance of this arrangement. As you will hear, the parts balance quite well and it makes for an effective concert piece.
