We present a work composed as a tongue-in-cheek expression of a popular street tune heard today, put through a series of 5 variations that explore different styles. It works in both a satirical as well as sophisticated manner vertically and horizontally, and uses multiple cliches that will get the audience perking up in recognition. The theme, 贺新年, is a common tune sung in Chinese New Year celebrations. In the heart of celebrating the New Year, this piece is written playable by musicians of all ages, whether in schools or as community orchestras and bands, to come together by the common celebratory notion in a work for an extended orchestra, including the saxophone and euphonium. Written by Daniel Cheng and Jeremy Goh, we hope that this season this piece can bring both laughter and reverence to the street tune, blown out of proportion in style and size. Starting the work is an atonal entry, built on tone rows and planing, legacies of Shoenberg and his contemporaries, before decomposing into an exceedingly lively statement of the theme. This is then juxtaposed beside a trip to tribal communities with interlocking rhythms and a modal distortion of the melody. From the modal mess and deviation from diatonicism, we then return to the prim and proper style of Mozart and Haydn in a short Classical variation. As if to mock its neat stature, this then is shattered with a juxtaposition beside a variation in the style of Shostakovich, modelled after the controversial Leningrad symphony, which draws on a different dimension of the theme, its banality, and propagating and emulsifying it to terrifying levels as it is distorted. Finally, a schreckenfanfare is directed marking an entry into a tribute to one of the greatest legends in music composition, with Beethoven along with its transcendental qualities of cyclism, and use of learned styles, methods of maintaining tension etc., bringing a grand ending to the 10 minute long work.

Similar to youngvocal ensembles, performing a round helps students to securely play with a group that is doing something different thanother sections of the ensemble, which ultimately assists in the transition to playing within a smaller, individual section orindependent part. The original melody was Soleado, a tune from 1974 by Ciro Dammicco (alias Zacar), composer for Italy's Daniel Sentacruz Ensemble, and Dario Baldan Bembo. The tune was based on Damicco's earlier tune Le rose blu published in 1972. The English language lyrics were written a few years later by Fred Jay (Friedrich Alex Jacobson). They do not make specific mention of Christmas. Fred Jay's lyrics have been sung by many artists, most successfully by Johnny Mathis in 1976, whose version was the Christmas number one of that year in the UK. [Wikipedia] This is an arrangement for the Concert Band with an Optional Vocal and Chorded Piano part (Not shown on the score). It can also be used as an instrumental featuring a solo on the Trumpet and the Oboe. There are parts for both Euphonium TC and BC, Tubas in C, Eb, and Bb. Sometimes the composer may point us to the meaning of a piece, without actually providing it. Says Daniel Burwasser: “Catching Fireflies is an ode to the tender memories and joys of childhood. The thematic material and structure of the work reflects the immediacy and innocent fascination of a time when everything is new and exciting, and something as simple as the flashing of a firefly can capture the imagination. The opening indeed creates visions of sprightly fireflies. An animated seven-note figure, first introduced by the strings then taken up by the brass and woodwinds, suggests a dazzling nocturnal scene of children scurrying after the elusive insects. The theme rapidly transmogrifies, aided by echoing dialogues between instruments as well as abrupt percussive effects. Then, a placid lyrical interlude begins with contemplative strains. Have the catchers settled back to view the stars? Like youth itself, the segment doesn’t last and is pushed aside by a subdued version of the lead theme. This time, a lyrical melody pro- vides a whiff of melancholia, but one limned by kaleidoscopic xylophone notes. Then, a longer adagio theme develops, and while it reflects the original lyrical interlude, it soon assumes a nostalgic aura reminiscent of fifties film music. Perhaps it evokes the romantic theme from an old movie the composer attended as a youth. But the night is not over and as the tempo increases, the brass sounds a variation of the opening melody, there is a brief parenthesis of calm, then a crashing tutti puts an end to the evening activities.

The idea behind the piece is supposed to potray the process of overcoming obstacles in life, in this case, its the obstacle of losing people. When somesone in our life is lost suddenly, we're left a mess, everything seems discombobulated, nothing seems to quite make sense anymore. The beginning of the piece gets that across with the drone coming in on its own and the different chord changes through out helps drive that message along. Then the whole band joins in to really set in the confussion and disorientate you. The two soloists, Trombone and Trumpet, will be offstatge solos. These are playing the roles of Gods angels coming to your rescure trying to guide you through it all. But, you do not listen and the confussion continues on. Soon enough, you give in, listening to the angels you find yourself and you realize...its all okay. The ensemble is playing this emotional and warm hit with the solosits singing over the top giving the sense that we've made it. Then to close out the piece, the soloists chime in one last time to bring in the resolution of the piece, that you are home, you are safe, you can rest.
