The Young Oak March was composed by Lithuanian composer Kazys DaugÄ—la (b. 1960) in 1989 for the first international festival Trimitas held in the city of Vilnius. The spirit of the march reflects the hopeful mood of the long-depressed people of Lithuania. The melody near the midpoint is taken from the Lithuanian folk song The Young Oak Grew in the Forest, which is with 3/4 and 2/2 meters, but as for marching everything goes symmetrically. In this context the young oak refers to a young man whose mother wanted him to be a ploughman, not a soldier. But as the text continues, if you haven't been a soldier, you can't be a good ploughman.The Young Oak - a popular patriotic march in Lithuania composed during the Lithuanian revival. It is often performed by military bands during Lithuanian statehood celebrations and festivals. I Love Your Smile is a song by American singer-songwriter Shanice, released in October 1991 as the lead single from her second studio album, 'Inner Child'. It features a saxophone solo by Branford Marsalis (retained in this arrangement) and, to date, I Love Your Smile is Shanice's best known and most successful hit. It charted well in the US and across Europe and in 1992, Shanice was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. NME ranked I Love Your Smile number 50 in their list of Singles of the Year in December 1992 and it always seems to find new fans from all generations online, where the video has been viewed millions of times. There is a little snippet of Debussy's 'Arabesque No. 1', which is featured in a remix version of the track and the chart ends with another sax solo to bring everything to a peaceful, happy close. The idea behind the piece is supposed to potray the process of overcoming obstacles in life, in this case, its the obstacle of losing people. When somesone in our life is lost suddenly, we're left a mess, everything seems discombobulated, nothing seems to quite make sense anymore. The beginning of the piece gets that across with the drone coming in on its own and the different chord changes through out helps drive that message along. Then the whole band joins in to really set in the confussion and disorientate you. The two soloists, Trombone and Trumpet, will be offstatge solos. These are playing the roles of Gods angels coming to your rescure trying to guide you through it all. But, you do not listen and the confussion continues on. Soon enough, you give in, listening to the angels you find yourself and you realize...its all okay. The ensemble is playing this emotional and warm hit with the solosits singing over the top giving the sense that we've made it. Then to close out the piece, the soloists chime in one last time to bring in the resolution of the piece, that you are home, you are safe, you can rest.

Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends. Whether we are journeying to the mountains or driving to work, mother nature is always on display. Therefore, I believe mother nature symbolizes pleasure, pain, and despair. Having the opportunity to grow up in New England and now living in Maine, I have seen a WIDE variety of weather within just a period of 24 hours! While living on the West Coast I will never forget my drive on the 395 going north and seeing the Sierra Nevada mountains (to my left) tall and grand with snow covered mountain tops! To the right, you would see and feel the hot desert! Although the performers do not need to envision mountaintops or deserts you need to respect the different sections and moods of the piece and know that everything is changing around us, all the time. As musical artists, we can convey our life journeys through our individual sound as well as the ensemble; whether it’s through enjoying nature, life’s challenges, and celebrations! Enjoy making traditional sounds and nontraditional sounds with your instrument.

Sometimes the composer may point us to the meaning of a piece, without actually providing it. Says Daniel Burwasser: “Catching Fireflies is an ode to the tender memories and joys of childhood. The thematic material and structure of the work reflects the immediacy and innocent fascination of a time when everything is new and exciting, and something as simple as the flashing of a firefly can capture the imagination. The opening indeed creates visions of sprightly fireflies. An animated seven-note figure, first introduced by the strings then taken up by the brass and woodwinds, suggests a dazzling nocturnal scene of children scurrying after the elusive insects. The theme rapidly transmogrifies, aided by echoing dialogues between instruments as well as abrupt percussive effects. Then, a placid lyrical interlude begins with contemplative strains. Have the catchers settled back to view the stars? Like youth itself, the segment doesn’t last and is pushed aside by a subdued version of the lead theme. This time, a lyrical melody pro- vides a whiff of melancholia, but one limned by kaleidoscopic xylophone notes. Then, a longer adagio theme develops, and while it reflects the original lyrical interlude, it soon assumes a nostalgic aura reminiscent of fifties film music. Perhaps it evokes the romantic theme from an old movie the composer attended as a youth. But the night is not over and as the tempo increases, the brass sounds a variation of the opening melody, there is a brief parenthesis of calm, then a crashing tutti puts an end to the evening activities.

Published by John McAllister (A0.778226). Pitt Street Bridge was commissioned by the Moultrie Middle School Band to be premiered at the 2020 SCMEA Conference. The remains of the Pitt Street Bridge lie in the Intercoastal Waterway and in what is now called Pickett Bridge Recreation Area. It is within walking distance from the middle school, and it is an integral part of Mt. Pleasant’s history. Originally designed as a trolley bridge that connected Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant, Pitt Street Bridge is now a haven for recreation and relaxation. The lively melodies throughout the piece depict the festive activities that take place on Pitt Street Bridge. The piece opens as though one is standing on the Pitt Street Bridge, gazing out at the immensely beautiful surroundings. Slow and serene as the sun blankets the harbor and the marsh. The bridge has a tremendous history, dating back to the revolutionary war, which is where the melody begins. Deconstructed from part of Sir Peter Parker, a song about the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. A distant memory, this melody will find itself in many ways throughout (three notes rising diatonically followed by a falling 3rd). The woodwinds pattern in the opening (which also appears throughout), represents the ripples in the water, flowing gently back and forth. The military past of the bridge is hinted at in two ways. The snare in the opening, reminiscent of the rudimental style and several harmonies throughout that hint at an Americana style. As the piece picks up tempo, the hustle and bustle of 1920s Charleston comes to life. Harmonically, everything is still built off of the foundation of the original tune, but now we’re in bright and joyous times and people are transported to and from the island in the Roarin’ 20s. The optimism abounds until the climax of the piece as the bridge (musically speaking), fades into the past. At the finale, one is standing on the bridge with the distant melody still played on the flute.
