It was commissioned by Dr. Kristen Tjornehoj, Conductor of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls Symphony Band in remembrance of Kaye Bird, who passed away in 2016 as a resident of River Falls and a member of the community for several years. Kaye Bird was also a resident of Indiana, PA for 37 years and was a well respected teacher in the public schools there. Set Free to go Home was premiered by the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Symphony Band at Fisher Auditorium on February 6, 2020, conducted by Dr. Jason Worzbyt. It is agrade 3 band piece with a duration of five minutes. It is published by Musica Nova USA and availableon sheetmusicplus.com and jwpepper.com.Performance Notes: Set Free to go Home was composed with flexible instrumentation in mind.There are several instruments listed in the score that would enhance the piece (such as harp, oboes,double bass, ect.) but are not necessary to convey a successful performance. For example, if there are not five percussionists available, the piece may be played by less performers with the use of a drumkit, with one person playing two or more parts. This composition can sound very good whether thereare fifteen players or a band with one hundred players.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. His compositions have been performed more than one thousand times in over twenty-six countries. He has written over ninety compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally, includingFirst Prize in the 1st WASBE (World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) International Composition Contest 2017, First Prize Winner of Reneé Fisher Composition Prize, First Prize Winnerin Concurso Bienal de Composición de Musica para Banda, Ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain), Menzione d’Onore (highest award given) of the Mario Bernardo Angelo-Comneno International MusicCompetition by the Accademia Angelica Costantiniana Arti E Scienze (Italy), First Prize in the TUBA International Etude Composition Competition, the IBLA Grand Prize (Italy), 2nd Prize in the 2nd WASBE International Composition Contest 2019, several awards from The American Prize, annual composition awards from Standard Awards Panel of American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers andmany others. He has been commissioned by The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, The Army Band Pershing’s Own of Washington, DC, The Banda Municipal of Bilbao, The Primativa de Lliria,and others. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, SouthAmerica and Europe and have been performed extensively throughout the world.He has thirty-three compositions commercially recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Records and others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer atmany colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.

If you like the music, these pieces also sound great with a larger full instrumentation.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming (originally known as Es ist din Ros entsprungen) is a German Christmas Carol and Marian hymn in mixed meter. First sung in the 15th Century and first published int he 16th Century, this hymn is still popular in the 21st Century. In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This piece features multiple subtle musical sensibilities and a gentle introduction into the world of mixed meter. I sincerely hope you enjoy this arrangement!

It was premiered on February 14, 2010 by one of the Honor Bands at Morehead State University, Kentucky, with the composer conducting. It is composed as a grade 3 composition to be played by any school band at that level such as junior high or grade 7 & 8. It has no passages that should be difficult for any instrument to play. As in most grade 3 pieces, there is a lot of doubling of instruments, so even if there is not a completely full instrumentation, all voices will be heard.In 2013, Kentuckywas selected as a finalist in Category 1 (Concert band, Grade 1-2.5 Jr. HS) in the 3rdInternational Frank Techeli Composition Contest hosted by Manhattan Beach Music.In 2014 it was one of the featured pieces at the University of North Texas summer conducting workshop. There is a youtube video of the performance by the UNT Wind Symphony Conducted by Nicholas Guiliano. In 2015 an analysis and commentary of Kentuckywas published in the book Teaching Music through Performance in Band Volume 10, GIA Publications. The analysis is by Amy M. Knopps, Associate Director of Bands at Eastern Michigan University.

Sinfonietta (alternate title SinfonÃa de Vino y Aceite de Magallon) is a composition for concert band that can be played by any band whether it has 100 players or 30 players. It is at grade 3 level of difficulty and has several substitute parts for ensembles that may not have complete instrumentation. Although the scoring includes piccolo, oboes, bassoons, and French horns, these instruments are not needed to command a good performance.Sinfonietta adheres to classical forms of symphonies by composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The forms are very clear so the players of the band can learn this important history. The first movement is in standard Sonata Allegro form.The second movement is in A B A form and features a solo trumpet. The third movementis in a Rondo form (A B A C A) with three distinct themes. The work was commissioned in 2017 by the town of Magallón, Spain in celebration of the town’s industries of wine and olive oil. The mayor of the town of 1,000 inhabitants, Victor Manuel Chueca Rodriguez, was specific in his request for a composition at grade 3 level of difficulty. He also suggested the title as Symphony. Since it a three-movement composition instead of a four-movement composition (the normal Minuet and Trio movement is not included in this piece), the title of Sinfonietta instead of Symphony is used.Gregory Fritzeis a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally, including First Prize in the 1st WASBE (World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) International Composition Contest2017, First Prize Winner of Reneé Fisher Composition Prize, First Prize Winner in Concurso Bienal de Composición de Musica para Banda, Ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain), Menzione d'Onore (highest award given) of the Mario Bernardo Angelo-Comneno International Music Competition by the Accademia Angelica Costantiniana Arti E Scienze (Italy), First Prize in the TUBA International Etude Composition Competition, the IBLA Grand Prize (Italy), 2nd Prize in the 2nd WASBE International Composition Contest 2019, several awards from The American Prize, annual composition awards from Standard Awards Panel of American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers and many others. He has been commissioned by The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, The Army Band Pershing’s Own of Washington, DC, The Banda Municipal of Bilbao, The Primativa de Lliria, and others. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe and have been performed extensively throughout the world. He has thirty-three compositions commercially recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Records and others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.

First sung in the 15th Century and first published int he 16th Century, this hymn is still popular in the 21st Century. In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This piece features multiple subtle musical sensibilities and a gentle introduction into the world of mixed meter. I sincerely hope you enjoy this arrangement!

The piece is at least a grade 3 due to competing time signatures, contrapuntal melodies, and persistent upper register work across several sections.Written during my time in the Army, this march emerged as a sort of musical joke. The melody and rhythm parts alternate between 6/8 and 2/4 (or 2 over 3) time throughout the piece with the quarter and dotted-quarter keeping the same beat. It incorporates nearly every march convention that my friend and I could think of from the low brass taking over the strain and piccolo obbligato to the baffling euphonium arpeggios in the final strain along with the equally bafflingly obnoxious trombone countermelody. At the same time, it breaks convention by granting the horn players the melodic line in the trio section instead of giving them the back beats they love so much. One of the stranger jokes whose meaning one might miss is the mix up of beats at the key change which was done deliberately to put the generals and first sergeants out of step. It also contains a symphony's worth of stingers at the end (because 19-year-old me was hilarious ... apparently).
