Published by Polar Publications (A0.757442). This work was commissioned by Ron Inyoue for the Arctic Winer Games in Fairbanks, Alaska 2014. When Ron Inouye first discussed a fanfare for the Arctic Winter Games to be held in Fairbanks in 2014, he asked me to somehow represent the peoples of the north and to include something of native drumming, particularly, Inuit drumming. Since the fanfare is for the games, it needs to be able to be used in its entirity or in parts depending on how much time or the purpose of the fanfare in a given situation. This fanfare is therefore composed with three distinct sections that can be used separately or together depending on the circumstance. The Opening four measures of the brass is reminiscent of much of my music representing the Aurora Borealis. The Drumming is inspired by Inuit and Yupik drumming. I use the two different types of drum and blend the drumming style of the Yupik and Inuit cultures in a bit of a western context. The Yupik tradition of hard beat and soft beat is represented in the dynamics of the drums. The Inuit tradition of establishing the steady beat and then passing rhythmic patterns between the parts is represented throughout the work in all of the drum parts. There is a nod to Athabascan old time fiddle music in the choice of an Irish/Scotish traditional melody entitled The Far North. This is also a traditional Canadian Northern Tier American camping and scouting song. Finally, there is a traditional Fanfare that can be used independently to call people to an event or back from an intermission. It is my sincere hope that this fanfare represents all of us in some way and leaves enough to the listener, that they will relate their own experience of the North in the music they hear. The series ran from December 11, 1980, to May 1, 1988. The original theme music for the opening credits of the pilot episode was a mid-tempo jazzy piece by Ian Freebairn-Smith. This music was also used for the next nine regular episodes. Beginning in Episode 12, it was replaced by a more up tempo theme typical of 1980s action series by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter with guitar by Larry Carlton. Or who braught peace to the tension between Natives and English? Squanto is credited for doing both of these things. One of the first recoreded Native Americans, Squanto lived from 1585 to 1622. He was part of the Patuxet tribe, and taught settlers how to satisfy basic needs. And as far as the eye can see, there is no band music dedicated for him. So I have made a piece showing what may have happened when the settlers came. While not completly accurate, It is a great representation (and honor to Squanto) for your next concert!. The piece begins on a nice warm day, in a playful, dancelike movement, this quickly turns to anger as they see a bird that is not able to be hunted. This confusion leads to the mysteriousness that was most likely happening upon the natives. They start to pray to their gods. All of a sudden, the ship lands and a war breaks out! But Squanto wants to embrace this new culture they have brought, which slowly calms the fighting down. Eventually, the English Culture (represented by Hot Cross Buns) is embraced in the polytonal ways (disagreement). The final part is a chorale representing peace.Errata:Â 107: Singing is stopped.

Back in the late 1960s, competition for high school marching bands in Southern California consisted only in street parades. The prevailing organization (the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, or SCSBOA) through its adjudicators, judged a marching band both by how it marched in a parade, and by how much of a symphonic sound they can generate from the street. Drum majors, majorettes, signs and flag corps were also judged, but the band and its competition march was the focal point. In the fall of 1967, I was a sophomore at East Bakersfield High School, and our competition march was Bombasto.

I composed this piece because I wanted to get myself used to composing for large ensembles, wind ensemble particularly. This composition took the most time and energy in creating the biggest work I have taken on thus far. This piece allowed me to get a better insight of my creativity as well as incorporate the lessons I have learned from my music professors. The experience was well worth it for I now know what I am capable of in my compositions and I look forward to working on more works in large ensembles in the future. During the time I composed this piece, I was expecting to have it performed around April 2020. However, that was around the time when COVID started spreading around the world and so that experience was lost to me. I hope someday it will be performed under better days.

Ernest Farrar (1885-1918) was a talented composer, born in London but raised in Yorkshire, who was deprived of a long and storied career by his untimely death during World War I. He enlisted in 1915 and gained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in February 1918. At the suggestion of Charles Villiers Stanford and Ralph Vaughan Williams, he composed 'Heroic Elegy' (op. 36) in 1918 while in service, and conducted its first performance on 3 July 1918 while on leave. Farrar was summoned to France just over two months later and was tragically killed by machine gunfire at the Battle of Ephey Ronssoy later than month. The simple dedication at the top of the score reads To Soldiers, making his final composition even more poignant. A sombre, but somehow joyful piece that wouldn't be out of place in any military or civic memorial event.
