Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

This arrangement of Never Enough is for concert band with an optional vocal soloist.The work starts out with the simple piano arpeggios that really hooked my ear on the original, before leading into an intimate blend of woodwind timbres and flowing percussive melodies for the first verse. Low Brass lead the work into the first chorus, where a Horn solo carries the emotion to the first full ensemble hit that pushes through until the end of the work where sudden silence and soft, warm extended chord punctuates the piece.This piece was written with advanced high school and higher level musicians in mind. Though the pieces isn't incredibly difficult overall, the range asked of some of the performers and the raw emotion that this work represents demands a level of training. The first in my one composition a day series, I called it Ian's theme. My friends joked about it being the opening theme for Wednesday Season 2 which gave me a chuckle, the mix is a little hot in the MP3 and the dynamics might need some work in general. But hey, not bad for one days work if you ask me. The Crystal Synth is just a nifty little sound in Musescore 4, I wrote a Glock 1 and 2 part that mimic the synth as it has intervals baked into the sound.Â

Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,†and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.†♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter†in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter†pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns†“Listen to the Mockingbird†and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?†♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. The volunteers are a-pouring in From every loyal quarter, And I'm goin' down to Washington To fight for Abraham's daughter. ♫ At the beginning of the war, the majority of soldiers, North and South, were fighting to uphold their view of government, each side justifying its position by quoting the Constitution. Southern States saw each State as a sovereign, independent nation. Abraham Lincoln insisted that the United States were one nation. For Abraham Lincoln, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union. The Christmas Waltz is a Christmas song written by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne for Frank Sinatra, who recorded it in 1954 as the B-side of a new recording of White Christmas. Cahn recalls, One day during a very hot spell in Los Angeles the phone rang and it was Jule Styne to say, 'Frank wants a Christmas song.' Cahn resisted. Jule, we're not going to write any Christmas song. After Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas'? The idea's just ridiculous. Styne was emphatic, however. 'Frank wants a Christmas song.' The two met in Styne's apartment to begin work on the project, and Cahn asked the composer, 'Hey, Jule, has there ever been a Christmas waltz?' He said no. I said, 'Play that waltz of yours.' He did so, and Cahn began work on the lyrics of The Christmas Waltz, which many other artists have also recorded, including Doris Day, Peggy Lee, Bing Crosby, Natalie Cole, The Carpenters and many more. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723171). In 1817, James Hewitt set Francis Scott Key's poem The Defence of Fort M'Henry (which we now better know as The Star Spangled Banner). Hewitt's original song gained some local popularity; however, throughout most of the country, people began singing the poet's words to a popular drinking song then known to many Americans, English composer John Stafford Smith's To Anacreon in Heaven (originally written for a popular gentleman's club of amateur musicians in London, the Anacreontic Society). Whereas John Stafford Smith's music was borrowed for the poem, Hewitt's music was especially composed for the poem. I was asked by Mitch Sturman, the band director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, to arrange the original piano music for his band to play at his annual spring Concert of Premieres where he presented new works he had commissioned for his band from well-known band composers, and arrangements of neglected works he felt were worthy of performance. This was one of those neglected worthy pieces by an American composer for an American poem. It is orchestrated for flute, oboe, clarinets 1-3, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, bassoon, French horn, trumpets 1-2, baritone horn, trombone, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, and glockenspiel. .

Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

Published by Scott Custer Jr (A0.1153691). My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

On one of the shows, the celebrity guest was ballet star Doreen Wells who asked if she could dance to music of the Beatles. It fell to Wilkinson to arrange some of the hit songs for use by a ballerina. He hit on the idea of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite as a model; it was so popular that further movements were added for an EP recording and the complete Beatlecracker Suite is the result.
