Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Stephen Cai for Concert BandProgram Notes:MUSIC As a sequel to Pigstep by Lena Raine and Exodus by Ernest Gold, I have decided to take on the challenge of arranging the ever-famous glitch hop song, Monody by Christian Buettner (known more prominently by his online alias, TheFatRat).Similarly to Pigstep, my first arrangement, I ran into the challenge of instrumentation, as Monody’s original soundtrack almost entirely consisted of electronic instruments. However, I used the same technique I did with Pigstep to overcome this problem: assign basslines to low brass, treble melodies to mid-range instruments, and high parts to upper woodwinds. Unlike Pigstep, Monody pushed me to be more creative with the percussion section, as I had to puzzle out recreating all of the numerous sound effects throughout the piece with traditional percussion instruments. I even decided to notate a conch shell line for the war horn present at the beginning and the coda! At the end, however, it all came together nicely, and I came to realize that both this song and the process of arranging it represent a journey, albeit in different contexts. The word “Monody†refers to, in a literal sense, a song sung to mourn one’s death, which accordingly fits with my view of the piece as a journey where the narrator loses their companion. Writing the introduction measures (M.22) carried me through the genuine feelings of embarking on a mythical undertaking as the original soundtrack intends to portray. The lively middle section (M.70) was enjoyable to write as well, because the music itself is upbeat and full of energy. Finally, arranging the solo section was probably my most memorable experience. The slow and subtly melancholic character of the melody (the oboe solo) very closely alludes to the narrator’s mourning, and the enchanting lyrics originally written for this section further confirms their loss:    I still hear you in the breeze,    See your shadows in the trees;    Holding on, memories never change. The chords and harmonies that the original soundtrack provided were relatively simple to transcribe, and I found joy complementing them with luscious percussion effects. This is my interpretation of Monody, and I believe that it would be best performed as a journey, one which we can relate to as it encompasses the theme of loss; a monody. ARTWORK I also took up the challenge of creating original cover artwork for Monody, and I have to say, my level of appreciation for artists of any kind has skyrocketed ever since that endeavor. It took nearly two months of watching YouTube tutorials, onerous idea crunching, and using my sister’s drawing tablet, but I had nevertheless completed it with advice from some of my more experience peers (including my sister). Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.A Supreme Work of Art!The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.Gerald Manning

I originally wrote a Brass Band version of this work to be performed by the Freedom Brass Band of Northeast Ohio in the summer of 2011 knowing that I wanted it to be connected to a well-known patriotic text. It quickly became my most popular work and I decided to arrange it for Concert Band in 2018. Because it was adapted from a Brass Band setting, some of the instrument ranges are more advanced, but can still work for an advanced high school or college band.From a young age I found inspiration in Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. As a Boy Scout, I had read it at an annual service on Memorial Day. I had also studied it in school and even heard it spoken by a Lincoln impersonator. The words from this address speak to the ideals of human equality and freedom, and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect those ideals. Lincoln refers to this sacrifice as the last full measure of devotion and it is to those men and women who so bravely sacrificed that I dedicate this work. Combined with news stories about various billionaires funding space travel, I found myself wondering what space travel might be like if the space race happened several decades earlier. What if the same technology that modernized agriculture took us to the moon? What might rockets powered by steam sound like? Steam Powered Rocket is a bit of alternate history, taking us from liftoff to orbit and back to earth.

The Cantummit Waltz is called that because I found it hard to hum a few bars when asked to do so by some people who were helping me name it. So they suggested that I call it the I Can't Hum It Waltz. He was a Spanish clown, mime, acrobat, comic actor and circus artist, with American nationality since 1922, who is considered the best clown in the world of his time.Marceline was Spanish artist born in 1873 who performed in several European countries. Around 1895 he had success at the London Hippodrome and then enticed by producers Thompson and Dundy to come to the New York Hippodrome, where he arrived with great fanfare in 1905. He was a part of shows at the Hippodrome through 1915, by which time his pantomime routine and falling gags were falling out of favor with the public. He did reappear at the Hippodrome for some later shows in 1920-21 and 1922-23.Attempts to succeed in the restaurant business in New York and Connecticut both failed, and he lost money in real estate ventures. Out of work and out of savings, Marceline was found dead by suicide in his hotel room on November 5, 1927, with photographs of his glory days on the bed.Marceline was long admired by Charlie Chaplin, who worked with Marceline at the London Hippodrome from December 1900 to April 1901, and is one of just a few performers from this period of his life that Chaplin discusses in his autobiography. Chaplin recounts seeing him years later in the United States with a circus, and though expecting to see him be a featured star, was surprised to see him only amongst other clowns.

Abraham Lincoln Funeral March for Concert BandBy John Gross Barnard Orchestrated by Jari Villanueva This funeral march written by John Gross Barnard was performed by the United States Marine Band during the funeral procession from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol for Abraham Lincoln on April 19, 1865. The march is titled: Funeral March in Memory of the Abraham Lincoln: Played at the Obsequies of the President of the United States by the US Marine Band. The funeral march follows the standard format of dirges of the time (most notable are Webster’s Funeral March, Chopin’s Funeral March and March in Saul by Handel) written in minor keys (considered somber) and divided into eight measure phrases which makes it easy for the funeral cadence to be played underneath. This funeral march, like most written during this time, has a transition to a major key (happier sounding). This march goes to the relative major (D minor to D major) key. Since no parts are extant from the US Band, I was asked to score the march for a modern symphonic band. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferrybarges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fishto provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to beso in the future. The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, thisrepresents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is alinear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you canpicture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. Thesecond strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Triorepresents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have feltknowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts thatwere put forth to secure the land and build a community. There would have been many triumphs and manysuccesses, but the journey would have not been easy. The final strain is the culmination of the piece. This is thecelebration and the feeling of personal nobility that all of the settlers felt after taking a river and dirt and building acity. I hope you enjoy, The Palatka Port March!

I made this chart back in the 1980's when I was studying orchestration & Arranging under the late and great Lt. Col. Trevor Sharpe. The soundtrack was the fourth of the series to be composed by John Barry. He tried to incorporate the elegance of the Oriental sound with Japanese music-inspired tracks. The theme song, You Only Live Twice, was composed by Barry and lyricist Leslie Bricusse, and sung by Nancy Sinatra after her father Frank Sinatra passed on the opportunity. Nancy Sinatra was reported to be very nervous while recording – first she wanted to leave the studio; then she claimed to sometimes sound like Minnie Mouse.[36] Barry declared that the final song uses 25 different takes. There are two versions of the song You Only Live Twice, sung by Nancy Sinatra, one directly from the movie soundtrack, and a second one for record release arranged by Billy Strange.[citation needed] The movie soundtrack song is widely recognised for its striking opening bars and oriental flavour, and was far more popular on radio. The record release reached No. 44 on the Billboard charts in the US, and No. 11 in the UK. Both versions of the title song are available on CD. A different title song was originally recorded by Julie Rogers, but eventually discarded. Only two lines from that version were kept in the final lyrics, and the orchestral part was changed to fit Sinatra's vocal range. Rogers' version only appeared in a James Bond 30th Anniversary CD, with no singer credit. In the 1990s, an alternative example of a possible theme song (also called You Only Live Twice and sung by Lorraine Chandler) was discovered in the vaults of RCA Records. It became a very popular track with followers of the Northern soul scene (Chandler was well known for her high-quality soul output on RCA) and can be found on several RCA soul compilations.

Congratulations on completing the first few pages of your Method Book! I wrote this fanfare using only the typical concepts covered within these pages. The idea was that the music would be passed out after mastery of these concepts as a reward - we would end class with a little work each day on the “concert music†even if we weren’t preparing a concert. I have always found that it’s never too early to start working on the ensemble skills of balance, blend, intonation, and understanding one’s role within the ensemble. Plus, the act of making music together is why our kids joined band: playing pieces of music is fun!This fanfare should be played at Quarter Note = 116. It should be strong and notes should be played for their full value. There are only ever three lines (plus percussion) at any given time to help start the process of teaching Melody, Harmony, and Accompaniment.

During the journey, his page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king's footprints, step for step, through the deep snow. The legend is based on the life of the Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia (907–935), who was not a king in his lifetime but had that status conferred on him after his death. In 1853, English hymnwriter John Mason Neale wrote the lyrics in collaboration with his music editor Thomas Helmore to fit the melody of the 13th-century spring carol Tempus adest floridum, which they had found in the 1582 Finnish song collection Piae Cantiones. The march incorporates his song, Blue Ridge, I’m Coming Back To You. The lyrics of the refrain begin, Blue Ridge, Blue Ridge, I hear the bugle call. Fittingly enough Sousa wrote a bugle call preceding the song which appears as the Trio in the march. This delightful bugle march is accompanied by a basic rhythmic figure on the 1st and 3rd beats of each measure and a sparse woodwind line. This band arrangement by Jari Villanueva is a delightful setting of the original arrangement that gives the woodwinds and brass a chance to shine in different sections. Pay careful attention to the dynamics to make this march really shine! A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Dance of the Mystic Dragon - This work for beginning band is a look into the mystic past of kings, queens, knights and dragons! This is an excellent teaching tool staying mostly in Concert Bb, but throwing in some accidentals in isolated places. It also has a unison voice part for the majority of the ensemble to give it that plainchant type of sound. I think you and your students will enjoy Dance of the Mystic Dragon!
