Here is a compelling setting of Martin Luther’s hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (EIN FESTE BURG) by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1750). Originally composed for organ, it has been arranged for Concert Band with optional keyboard. Two harmonizations of the isometric version of the hymn are also provided. The first is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals. The second is based on the concluding Chorale of Cantata 80 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Including the music of both Bach and Pachelbel, this arrangement serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque era and the contributions of great Lutheran composers. It also provides opportunities to discuss the time of the Reformation. For worship the arrangement can be played alone or it can be used to accompany congregational singing. The Full Score is formatted for legal-size paper (8.5x14) while the parts are formatted for letter-size paper (8.5x11). Additional arrangements are available for Brass, Woodwind Quintet, and Strings. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances.The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time.This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. If it is to be a piano solo, the other instruments should not play the passages marked “opt. tacet (optional tacet). If the piano will not be treated soloistically, the conductor can have some or all of the “opt. tacet passages played at their discretion. The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Brahms composed the Alto Rhapsody, properly known as Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus, and Orchestra, opus 53 in 1869. It was first performed in Jena on March 3, 1870. The text is based on Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), a poem by well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The Alto Rhapsody, like many of Brahms’ works, has loneliness and alienation as its central themes. Brahms’ devotion to Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, is well-known (the letters between her and Brahms fill two volumes). What is less well-known is that he was undoubtedly very fond of Julie Schumann, Clara’s daughter.In 1869, Brahms spent the summer near the Schumann’s residence and was in daily contact with Julie and Clara completing, among other works, the Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes. In early July, Julie announced her engagement. Of course, I told Johannes first of all, Clara noted in her diary on the 11th. Soon after, the conductor Hermann Levi told her that Brahms had been devotedly attached to her daughter. By July 16th, Clara noted in her diary that Brahms speaks only in monosyllables . . . [and] treats Julie in the same manner, although he used to be so especially nice to her. Did he love her? Julie was married on September 22. Later on that very wedding day, Brahms called on Clara, who wrote in her diary, Johannes brought me a very wonderful piece . . . the words from Goethe’s Harzreise. . . He called it his bridal song. This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart’s anguish. If only he would for once speak so tenderly! This piece is of course the dark and emotional Alto Rhapsody. Goethe’s poem Harzreise im Winter poetically describes the kind of life God intends for different temperaments. The three stanzas set by Brahms concern the fate of a man in fruitless struggle against the bonds of misery. A young man, turned misanthropic by sorrow, seeks solitude in the wilderness. The piece is in the baroque cantata style, with an opening recitative, and aria, and a concluding chorale. The alto describes the desolate winter landscape and in the final chorale joins the male chorus in a prayer for a melody that can bring comfort to the thirsting soul (indeed the plea restore his heart is repeated three times at the end, as a kind of Amen). In the Alto Rhapsody it is not hard to find evidence for Brahms’ statement that I speak through my music. Krebs studied organ and composition with JS Bach and was highly commended by him. He was one of the most technically gifted young organists of his day, yet was never employed by a major church. Krebs held modest positions all of his life and he and his family of seven children struggled with poverty. ♫ Although underpaid according to his ability and training, Krebs produced a large body of work – 193 known scores. His compositions are judged to be of prime quality, superior enough for scholars to argue whether a piece was composed by him or Bach. His Toccata and Fugue in E for organ is counted one of the masterpieces in Baroque literature. His 2 concertos for lute show that he must have been an accomplished lute player. Krebs was born, studied, lived, & composed in or near Upper Saxony (much like Bach). ♫ Teaching band in a small school, I often needed flexible instrumentation to assure satisfaction for students when a full complement of instruments was not available. This Baroque work from pipe organ literature has been scored for 3 independent polyphonic voices plus an optional percussion part. This piece can be played with almost any combination of instruments or as a trio or quartet. I added an optional hand drum part so percussionists can also participate. Krebs Trio has been performed by my mid level band and a quintet of music educators at a school music benefit concert, and the fanfa at North Haiti Music Camp. ♫ Purchase price includes permission is granted to make photocopies of parts additional scores for a medium size school band.

In recent years, it is believed that it was composed by his older second cousin, Johann Ludwig Bach (1677 – 1731). Johann Ludwig was himself a Cantor and Kapellmeister, and lived in most of his life in Meiningen. There is evidence that this cantata was performed by Johann Sebastian in 1726. The key for this arrangement of Fear Does Not Possess Me is transposed from the original C Major. There are multiple substitute parts for the Solo Trumpet part. The horn, trombone, and alto clarinet are almost the same. Playing time is approximately 2:40 minutes.

Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1505940). Nordseebilder (North Sea Images) was composed during a vacation on the German North Sea island of Föhr. Johann Strauss incorporated his impressions of sea and coast land. It premiered on 16 November 1879 in the concert hall of the Vienna Musikverein, conducted by Johann's brother Eduard. The arrangement is in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2016 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria. Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1505915). Johann Strauss jr. composed this march in 1898 for the festival of the riflemen union in Vienna, Austria. The first performance was in a version with a male choir and orchestra. This arrangement in the original key of the orchestral version was commissioned by Salzburg Wind Philharmonic, principal conductor Hansjoerg Angerer and premiered at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2024 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television.
