Of course, I had to select a medley of appropriate pieces, but somehow could not assemble compositions that were both short enough and very playable by my group. That left mewith the task of writing my own arrangement of military anthems.I pay tribute to the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. What is conspicuously missing, however, isthe United States Air Force Song. After the assembly, I was also asked, What, no Air Force Song?I tried a version of Military Jamboree with the Air Force Song, but because of the meter, 6/8, I found it tobe a lot more difficult for my students. They could play everything else, except the 6/8 rhythms. So, the musicteacher in me made the difficult decision to remove the United States Air Force Song from the finalarrangement, and thus, making it more playable for a developing band.

The fencibles were essentially militia units formed by British to defend the colonies from attacks from outside forces between the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution.The independent United States kept the practice of forming local militias. The National Fencibles was a Washington-based drill team and militia. As was his practice of writing and dedicating marches to real groups, schools, and historical figures, John Philip Sousa wrote and dedicated this march to the National Fencibles.The various fencible groups stayed active throughout the Civil War, and eventually were absorbed into the United States Army and National Guard.

Whether it was the movie house pianist, in the case of silent films, or the composer of a full score, the musician could, cleverly, portray characters with their individual themes, or leit motifs. The development of the theater organ came about to provide music and sound effects for the first three decades of the 20th Century. The tradition of iconic music themes carried well into radio, television, and in more modern times, video games.Growing up in New York City, I was able to view more than my fair-share of both movie house westerns, as well as TV shows. Saturday mornings were filled with Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, and Hopalong Cassidy episodes with their own themes. The bad guy had his theme, as well as the good guy. You cheered, or you booed to the one you connected with. Big screen westerns almost always had their theme songs, and almost always sung by Frankie Laine.Western Legends is an homage to the radio, television, and film composers whose scores will always be etched on my mind.

No matter if it's an arrangement of a specific piece, or an original composition, I find myself wanting to view a movie merely for the score.When I was growing up, Westerns were a ubiquitous genre in Hollywood. In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW205-S). 9 x 12 in inches.Long before the tragic sinking of the Medusa, was the sinking of the French ship, The Medusa. The frigate Medusa was completed in 1806, launched in 1810, and saw action in the Napoleonic wars. In 1816, it set sail from French to its ultimate location in Senegal to repossess it from the British. Along with cargo, there were almost 400 people on board. What no one knew, however, was that there was an incompetent captain on board with dubious skills.The ship was caught in a storm off the coast of Mauritania. After being damaged from hitting rocks and multiple attempts to relaunch it, it couldn't move. Soon, it was discovered that there was a shortage of lifeboats. Most of the crew and some of the passengers made their way to the lifeboats, saving about 250 people. That left about 149 others on board. Crew members left on board scrambled to build a raft for the others. The raft was launched and tied to one of the lifeboats. The hope was that everyone would make it to land, almost 60 miles away. The horror came, when the captain ordered the raft to be cut loose, claiming, that it was slowing everyone else down. That left the raft survivors to their own devices.Multiple days at sea brought on starvation, death and disease. People starved to death, and acts of desperation came about, such as the weak, but alive, being thrown overboard, and even cannibalism. Many days later, when survivors were finally rescued, there were only 15 people left alive, with 5 of them dying soon afterwards. News of the disaster quickly reached France, where both the government and the people were thoroughly outraged. Newspapers covered the disaster, and eventually there were trials prosecuting the captain and the crew for negligence. This can be considered as the first documented sea disaster. In 1818, 27 year- old Theodore Gericault was so moved by this disaster, that he painted his masterpiece, The Raft of The Medusa. To this day, the painting, which is enormous in size and almost the size of the raft itself, hangs in the Louvre. This is my first attempt at program music. It was my hope that I captured the mood, the feeling, and above all, in all good program music, that my composition told the story.

The fencibles were essentially militia units formed by British to defend the colonies from attacks from outside forces between the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution.The independent United States kept the practice of forming local militias. The National Fencibles was a Washington-based drill team and militia. As was his practice of writing and dedicating marches to real groups, schools, and historical figures, John Philip Sousa wrote and dedicated this march to the National Fencibles.The various fencible groups stayed active throughout the Civil War, and eventually were absorbed into the United States Army and National Guard.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW205). 9 x 12 in inches.Long before the tragic sinking of the Medusa, was the sinking of the French ship, The Medusa. The frigate Medusa was completed in 1806, launched in 1810, and saw action in the Napoleonic wars. In 1816, it set sail from French to its ultimate location in Senegal to repossess it from the British. Along with cargo, there were almost 400 people on board. What no one knew, however, was that there was an incompetent captain on board with dubious skills.The ship was caught in a storm off the coast of Mauritania. After being damaged from hitting rocks and multiple attempts to relaunch it, it couldn't move. Soon, it was discovered that there was a shortage of lifeboats. Most of the crew and some of the passengers made their way to the lifeboats, saving about 250 people. That left about 149 others on board. Crew members left on board scrambled to build a raft for the others. The raft was launched and tied to one of the lifeboats. The hope was that everyone would make it to land, almost 60 miles away. The horror came, when the captain ordered the raft to be cut loose, claiming, that it was slowing everyone else down. That left the raft survivors to their own devices.Multiple days at sea brought on starvation, death and disease. People starved to death, and acts of desperation came about, such as the weak, but alive, being thrown overboard, and even cannibalism. Many days later, when survivors were finally rescued, there were only 15 people left alive, with 5 of them dying soon afterwards. News of the disaster quickly reached France, where both the government and the people were thoroughly outraged. Newspapers covered the disaster, and eventually there were trials prosecuting the captain and the crew for negligence. This can be considered as the first documented sea disaster. In 1818, 27 year- old Theodore Gericault was so moved by this disaster, that he painted his masterpiece, The Raft of The Medusa. To this day, the painting, which is enormous in size and almost the size of the raft itself, hangs in the Louvre. This is my first attempt at program music. It was my hope that I captured the mood, the feeling, and above all, in all good program music, that my composition told the story.

Of course, I had to select a medley of appropriate pieces, but somehow could not assemble compositions that were both short enough and very playable by my group. That left mewith the task of writing my own arrangement of military anthems.I pay tribute to the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. What is conspicuously missing, however, isthe United States Air Force Song. After the assembly, I was also asked, What, no Air Force Song?I tried a version of Military Jamboree with the Air Force Song, but because of the meter, 6/8, I found it tobe a lot more difficult for my students. They could play everything else, except the 6/8 rhythms. So, the musicteacher in me made the difficult decision to remove the United States Air Force Song from the finalarrangement, and thus, making it more playable for a developing band.

No matter if it's an arrangement of a specific piece, or an original composition, I find myself wanting to view a movie merely for the score.When I was growing up, Westerns were a ubiquitous genre in Hollywood. In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.
