A promise to stand by... this phrase indicate loyalty, steadfastness, being a man of one's word, knowing that integrity and honor are the enduring qualities by which we will be judged; not fame, fortune, influence, or other worldly measures. It is no surprise, therefore, that this phrase was incorporated by Lou Fortunate and Msgr Herman Kucyk, of blessed memory, into the alma mater of Divine Child High School. When I was approached by Mr. Bush and the Divine Child Band Boosters about the possibility of writing a piece to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the band program I was excited, flattered, and--most of all--humbled that I should be chosen out of many worthier candidates, in my estimation. Divine Child has had, for the longest time--since the beginning, it seems--a vibrant and thriving fine arts program involving music (both vocal and instrumental), theatre, and the visual arts as well as literature and poetry. I began to conceive of a work that would pay homage to each of these arts musically and be a celebration of all that Divine Child has to offer. One of my favourite composers, Gustav Mahler, famously said, a symphony must be like the world; it must contain everything. In the 1988 vice-presidential debate, Lloyd Bentsen famously said to Dan Quayle, Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. A voice in my head said, Benjamin, you're no Gus Mahler. As the discarded drafts in the recycle bin took on a life of their own, I eventually dismissed the idea as impractical, and even vainglorious. I settled upon a more general idea to make the music about the band program. Most every student in the band program goes through the rigors of marching band and performs at the Falcon football games where they become intimate with the Three School Songs: the Falcon Fanfare, the Fight Song, and the Alma Mater. Taking the latter piece as my inspiration, I meditated upon the mission of the school: a promise to educate us in body, mind, and spirit. Divine Child High School stands by her promise, recruiting some of the best teachers in the area to guide us through the tumultuous adolescent years. We students, too, have a promise: to strive to be worthy of this gift, and to accept it and use it for the betterment of society. In band class, under Leo Tallieu, I learned to listen; to contribute to the group; to consider my part in relation to the whole ensemble; to show leadership when needed; and to be a role player when needed. And so, my conception of the piece changed. I wanted to use melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic devices that would be familiar to all DCHS band students, but to use them in a new and different way; to recontextualize them. As time went on, Bob Bush asked me if I would be able to work in a tribute to two band students who had tragically died in the last few years: Blaise H.

Heitor Villa-Lobos was a prolific Brazilian composer, conductor, ‘cellist, and classical guitarist, and was probably the most significantly inventive individual in 20th-century Brazilian art music. He wrote over 2,000 orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. Central to Villa-Lobos’s compositional language is Brazilian folk music – he spent his formative musical years playing popular songs on the streets of Rio de Janeiro – but also using elements of European classical works and influenced by French music, creating his unique sound world. Sexteto Mistico is a unique composition in one movement, consisting of short sections, each bringing unexpected richness, strangeness, virtuosity and polyrhythms. The opening is diaphanous and other-worldly; instruments enter in turn as if introducing themselves, continually weaving their dreamlike harmonies. In the next segment we’re taken into a dark, atmospheric oboe solo; this, to rippling accompanying arpeggios, twists and turns with lyrical eeriness. In the final section the theme, that the repeated motif had been hinting at, clearly emerges, leading us to a bright conclusion. Reimagined for symphonic band from the original sextet of flute, oboe, alto saxophone, guitar, celesta and harp.

One of our favorite songs that he sang was TheFar North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of hermovies. Years later I transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell methey recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch'ssong. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes inthe border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada.The original arrangement, for string quartet, was premiered by the OdeonQuartet on October 21, 2003, at Seattle's TownHall.

One of our favorite songs that he sang was The Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I recently transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch’s song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. In a rough accounting of Sousa’s body of work, marches make up only the second most numerous of his efforts – some 135 march compositions versus over 320 arrangements and transcriptions for Band. Outside of his marches, most of the Sousa catalog, including his humoresques, remains unpublished and largely unheard today. By way of an old Sousa concert program, we learn the narrative of his humoresque Among My Souvenirs. In it, the Nichols song Among My Souvenirs is lengthened into a sketch. Among his souvenirs is a photograph, letters and a broken heart. As he meditates, he goes back to a time before he was broken-hearted and remembers when he and his beloved were softly singing Twinkling Stars are Laughing, Love. Next, his mind reverts to the time when he was Seeing Her Home, recalling the songs of years gone by at Aunt Dinah’s Quilting Party – he was Seeing Nellie Home. After this, he travels to the Far East, and visions of The Road to Mandalay come to him. From there, he meditates on the Sweet Mysteries of Life and, finally, arrives at the closing picture in which he is once more Among my Souvenirs.

The original song embodies beauty as a whole, but the lyrics use that embodiment to describe the beauty of a partner the singer is falling in love with. The verse section of the song is soft but eventually thrusts the listener into a powerful chorus section. The song creates this warm summer like feeling, hence its use of major and minor 7th chords, which is very fitting for its time of release (July 15, 2022). To add to the warmth of the song, JVKE changes the pitch of the song to A=432 hertz tuning, instead of the conventional A=440 hertz tuning. Many people believe that A=432 hertz tuning decreases the listener’s heart rate and sounds more peaceful, which which perfectly fits the mood of the song. With these lyrics and musical techniques combined, GOLDEN HOUR gives the listener an amazing and moving experience, and is why it is one of the most viral songs on the internet.  This song was chosen to be arranged for the Scarsdale High School Honors Wind Ensemble because of its popularity among teenage students, as well as to welcome the new director of bands, Mr. Brian Zeller.
