Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.734878). Concertutti is a triple concerto for 3 Bb trumpets (with optional flugelhorn) and concert band. The solo parts are advanced, technical, difficult, and hugely fun to play! The band parts are modest in range and difficulty, designed to be playable by a good high school band. Duration: 8'00.Concertutti is a portmaneau, a made-up word combining concerto (a composition for one or more soloists with a large ensemble) and tutti (everyone). To my knowledge this is the first concerto for three trumpets to have been composed in the past 250 years. (The only other triple concertos in the repertoire are one by J.S. Bach and two by Antonio Vivaldi.) Concertutti was commissioned by The Northwest Passage Trumpet Trio and was premiered by them on May 3, 2019 with the Grove City College Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Tedford. A revised version was performed by The Northwest Passage Trumpt Trio on June 30, 2019 with the Hollidaysburg Community Band, under the direction of Doug Stephens. The current edition is a second revision, with the chief differences of being over three minutes shorter and sporting a new coda.

Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

Admittedly, the choice of title for this work for novice wind ensemble was based more on what would rhyme with the word ‘Tumbarumba’, than staying true to the style of the North American Latin groove made popular in the 1930s! It does; however, introduce players to some of the musical aspects found in Latin American and Afro-Cuban music in an accessible way. Written for and premiered by the Sturt Public School Band (near the town of Tumbarumba) this fun work utilises narrow instrumental tessituras, and incorporates simple off off-beat entries, section solis, layered melodies, and a fun bass line that will keep your low woodwind and brass players engaged and audience tapping their feet all the way through! This is a fun and well-written march with 1st-year players in mind. It could be a level 1/2 if not for the length and percussion parts. All wind parts are easily approachable by 1st-year players. Ranges are generally within the first 6 notes. Upper WW are mostly unison with an occasional 2nd Clarinet split. Lower WW/Brass are rhythmically unison with trombone occasionally split for harmonic depth. The Trumpet split is like the Clarinet in that it is rare and used for harmonic support and lower range for the youngest players. Percussion parts are somewhat more “advanced†than the wind parts. It can still be performed using fewer players and simplified parts are provided. There is a Simplified Snare Drum part that removes the 16th note patterns from the Adv. Snare.

Though there are split parts in the clarinet and trumpet, this is still playable by most beginner bands. A lot of unison rhythms and doubling for reinforcement. There is also a concert Db, which is not normal for this range, but most have it and it's in unison as well. I added a more challenging percussion part (toms) which can be omitted if needed. NOTE - There is a separate Trombone part that avoids 5th position. If they are comfortable with that, they should play the Euphonium part.

There is also non-functional harmony throughout the work that differentiates this piece from other works of this difficulty, with few accidentals (concert B in saxes and horns, concert D-flat in low brass and reeds).
