Get Over You is a disco track by British pop singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, taken from the album 'Read My Lips' and released as a double-A side with Move This Mountain in June 2002. The song was Ellis-Bextor's third top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number three on the UK Singles Chart. Get Over You reached the top 10 in Denmark, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. In the latter two countries, the song was certified platinum and gold, respectively, also doing well across Europe in Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland. The accompanying music video for Get Over You is set in a shopping mall, after hours, on a rainy night, where slowly all the manequins begin to come to life, led by Ellis-Bextor in a wedding dress, eventually eventually causing havoc and smashing glass, even the camera, at the end. This cool chart has a built-in solo section for alto sax, tenor sax or trumpet towards the end, allowing flexibility as needed, with a punchy tag to finish. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the concert band repertoire.

I’D RATHER BE BLUE, THINKING OF YOU (than be happy with somebody else) was originally recorded by pioneering American songstress Fanny Brice in 1929. Since then it was featured in her biography “Funny Girl†when it was sung (and danced on roller-skates!) by Barbra Streisand. This is a FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRATION which implies that it is intended for community bands, bands in small schools, club bands etc. and can be played, not only by full bands or orchestras but by incomplete bands and bands that are made up of almost any mixture of instrument that you can imagine. To achieve this, the music is made up of five “Parts†or voices which are defined by pitch and key e.g. Part II Bb – Trumpet, Clarinet, Tenor saxophone etc. To those five are added additional parts for percussion, tuned percussion, piano and voice. I should mention here that, besides regular band or orchestral instruments, it is possible to include less used instruments such as harmonica, piano-accordion, ukulele, electric guitar – the list is endless! Lastly, it is possible to use flexible orchestrations for chamber groups of any size. They can be chosen by instrument family e.g. Woodwind quintet, or by particular instrument e.g. Clarinet Trio.

Youngstown is a city in Ohio near the state’s border with Pennsylvania which fueled America's burgeoning industrial revolution with its steel manufacturing. After World War II, however, Youngstown began a slow economic decline as its economy failed to diversify. This culminated on “Black Monday,” September 19, 1977, when several steel plants shut down, destroying over 5,000 jobs overnight, and tens of thousands more in the coming months.This piece attempts to capture the history and spirit of Youngstown through the multifaceted textures of the wind band. With light flowing textures representing the city's beginnings as an iron mining town to harsher, industrial sounds for its height of influence, both give way to the devastation of Black Monday. Despite this, a melodic throughline permeates the darkness, representing the survival of the soul of Youngstown.Youngstown is a challenging, soulful, and emotional piece that should be playable by varsity-level high school bands and college wind ensembles. Do You Hear How Many You Are? for Concert Band was originally written in April and May of 2010 for SATB choir. I made this concert band arrangement in 2012. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. This is a common theme running through Christmas Carol literature. Conceived as a fun, accessible overture for young bands or bands with limited instrumentation, A Celebration of Bells highlights two of the most beloved Christmas carols associated with bells. The piece begins with a joyful brass bell-tone fanfare accompanied by trilling woodwinds. The introduction gives way to mostly-unison woodwind rendition of I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day. The brass then further works out the melody with a more chordal presentation. The woodwinds present a short, light interlude, followed by an explosive snare drum and full-band chord one key higher than the beginning. The piece shifts to a Jingle Bells march. Following the march, the music modulates back down one key and returns to a full band, Maestoso version of I Heard the Bells. The overture comes to a close with a return to the familiar introductory bell tones. This piece is sure to be a festive hit for both your students and their audience!
