This uplifting march is perfect for any young band! If you are looking for a piece that will push your students to the next level while having fun at the same time, this is the march for you! Its catchy tune will be an ear worm to your students and audiences alike with its flowing melodic lines and layered harmonies. A guaranteed hit with your students, Medallion March showcases each instrument throughout this piece. Every instrument takes a turn playing the featured melodies. This is especially great for your low brass and low woodwinds, whose parts are very active throughout. The trumpets and flutes lead the way with a victorious theme as the clarinets and saxes harmonize below with parallel rhythms. As we move through the first section, the trumpets and clarinets swap parts to give an even thicker sound. The driving rhythms of the 5-part percussion section keeps everyone moving in forward motion as the middle section’s melody is heard in the low brass and low woodwinds. As the conductor, Medallion March gives you the ability to incorporate phrasing, dynamic contrast and articulation that is seen throughout. Written in the key of Bb, each instrument’s parts can be played with ease, including the clarinets who are below written below the break. The percussionists have many opportunities to shine, as the colorfulness of the cymbals and triangles compliment the pulsating rhythms of the snare drum and bass drum. There is also an option for your flute players to play the 2nd line C above the staff in the repeated trio section, doubled by the bells. Medallion March makes for a great concert opener with its big sound and is also great for a concert finale. Your students will feel like they won a medal and leave your audiences wanting more!

Program notecoastal winds is based around a portion of an old piano piece of mine – the recurring big chords were originally a failed four-part chorale, which featured frowned-upon parallel fifths and a cheeky bassline that is simply a major scale. In this piece, the chorale is interrupted and restarts a number of times before revealing the whole phrase. The interruptions are all based on snippets of the chorale as well. Although there is no story to this piece, portions of it reminded me of sea shanties and other sailing the high seas music.Note: recording is just a MIDI mockup - live recording forthcoming.

A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Houdini is a song by English-Albanian singer Dua Lipa. It was released on 10 November 2023 as the lead single from Lipa's upcoming third studio album. The single debuted at number one in Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia and Greece, number two on the UK Singles Chart and in the top ten in Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland. On 27 October 2023, she shared a close-up picture of a key between her teeth, accompanied by the phrase catch me or I go; this was followed by a teaser of the song on her social media a few days later, hinting at the song title. A rearranged combination of numbers would spell out the title Houdini, named after escape artist Harry Houdini. Fans of Lipa also drew parallels to English singer Kate Bush's 1982 song of the same name, who also references Houdini by presenting a key in her mouth on the cover of her album 'The Dreaming' (1982). This catchy pop number is bound to be popular with younger players and audiences are sure to catch on to the disco beat.
