Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869220). Program note. Concerto for Concert Band is in four movements, played without pause. The first movement begins with a percussion fanfare that leads into woodwind melodies coupled with the euphonium. Then the percussion takes over again, with a timpani solo feature. The second movement is a dialogue between the clarinet and brass choirs. As the choir masses become more dense, a plaintive solo oboe emerges from the din … molto cantabile!!! The third movement is a scherzo featuring the trumpets and the woodwinds. The percussion section joins in with outbursts and commentaries … The brass choir returns in the last movement with more melodies emanating from the woodwinds. The work ends in quiet tranquility … molto cantabile again!!! The work is dedicated to the effervescent Bill Drury who conducts the wind ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. I was very grateful to Bill when he asked me to write something for him and the Jordan Winds at NEC. It is a huge challenge to compose music for large wind groups. I find most concert band pieces too thick and mucky in texture. The trick is to create concert band music that is light and transparent; to orchestrate in such a way that you can see/hear light seeping through. I hope I was able to do that. Enjoy!! A Celebration Miniature is an ode to all of the incredible people who get up and work with young people every day to share the joy, passion and truth of music education. Composed in an overture style, the piece begins with a powerful introductory statement pedaling on Bb major. After the introduction, the second theme is introduced by the clarinet section, accompanied by cabasa and triangle. The B section begins at Rehearsal C, featuring a light, legato approach. The piece picks back up at Rehearsal D with another rousing statement of the first theme, and propels itself to a thrilling close with a restatement of the introduction. Have fun! I hope you enjoy playing and rehearsing this piece as much as I did writing it, and you are certain to have something to celebrate after a performance of this piece!

Published by FDPublications (A0.1346610). Lullabye (goodnight, My Angel) for wind band was commissioned by Pano Mata and the ATSSB Region 1 for the 2022 All-Region Symphonic Band Clinic and Concert. Pano had heard many beautiful arrangements of the work by Billy Joel, but wanted something for the wind band medium that he could use for his guest clinicianship with the Region 1 All-Region Symphonic Band. The result is this arrangement, which works well for strong high school bands and collegiate ensembles alike. The piece has many opportunities for lyrical artistic moments, but also works well in a straightforward manner for ensembles with little rehearsal time. It is designed to be somewhat flexible with instrumentation, to accommodate the naturally diverse instrumentations of bands of all sizes.

It's a Saturday morning. After a busy and hectic week, you have nothing scheduled. Your wife and kids are happily occupied with things that don't involve you. Time to mentally check out, retreat to the man cave and find something to do that doesn't involve anything other than what is physically in front of you. On the radio in the background, there are some old blokes musing laconically about football. You don't really know what you'll be doing, but it will involve tools and not giving a flip about anything else for a little while. You may even need to make a trip to the hardware store at some stage... who knows? Tooling-a-Round is the first movement of what is (planned to be) a multi-movement work for concert band, depicting the cherished role of backyard shed in the life of a typical suburban middle-aged family man. Quavers are to be played rhythmically swung, with articulations observed whole-heatedly to highlight the playful and irreverent mood throughout - staccato markings in particular are to be exaggerated. The sound of real tools should be used in the percussion parts where indicated (e.g. saw, file, hammer, toolbox, circular saw, power drill etc.) with rhythms to be approximated in order to give the impression of a project getting underway as the piece progresses and the protagonist meanders from one task to the next.This piece is dedicated to busy fathers who work hard to preserve their capacity to create, play and explore.

M45 is the Messier catalog number for an open star cluster better known as the Pleiades. Oot-kwa-tah is dedicated to Schenectady County Community College on the forty-fifth anniversary of the college’s establishment as part of the State University of New York. The college sits on land that was once part of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Oot-kwa-tah is inspired by the Iroquois legend of M45, the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois tell a story about seven children who met each day and danced for hours at a time instead of doing chores. An old man appeared to them one day as they danced. He shone magnificently like silver and was clad from head to toe in brilliant white feathers. The old man warned them to stop dancing lest something terrible happen to them. Ignoring the old man’s warning and growing more and more hungry and lightheaded the children began to rise into the air. If only they had listened to me, the old man thought. As the children’s parents gathered, one little boy heard his father’s voice below. The little boy looked down and saw his father. At that instant he fell back to earth. The other children continued to float higher and higher into the sky to become the Pleiades star cluster.The Iroquois call them Oot-kwa-tah and are reminded of these reckless children each time they see a falling star.

It was filmed on location in Paris and contains animated titles by Maurice Binder, with a wonderful score by Henry Mancini featuring the popular theme song. This charming piece, 'Latin Snowfall', is taken from the film's soundtrack and is a star moment for your lead Trombone player (it was originally written for British player, Don Lusher) and also includes an optional Alto Flute part (which may need some subtle amplification) to bring out the full character of Mancini's luxurious sound.
