The inspiration, and title, of this work is derived from the mythical phoenix. The phoenix is a bird with colourful plumage and a golden tail. There are many variants on the colours depending on the legend, which include scarlet, purple, blue, and green. According to the legends, the phoenix's cry is a beautiful song. The legends also tell how the phoenix builds itself a nest towards the end of its life. At the end of its life cycle, the phoenix and its nest burn away until both are reduced to ashes. From the ashes, the phoenix is reborn.

A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Ryuichi Sakamoto (å‚本 é¾) (1952-2023) was a Japanese composer, pianist, record producer, and actor who pursued a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). With his bandmates Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, Sakamoto influenced and pioneered a number of electronic music genres. As a film score composer, Sakamoto won an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Grammy, and two Golden Globe Awards. 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence' (1983) marked his debut as both an actor and a film-score composer and his most successful work was 'The Last Emperor' (1987). 'Blu' (ブルー) was composed for an advert to mark the 50th anniversary of the Japanese clothing brand Aoyama Shouji and the title could be a reference to the colour of their business suits; the structure, after a quiet opening, is very reminiscent of Ravel's 'Bolero' and accompanies visuals of workers going about their day, gradually ending with a bit of a night out at the end before slumping into bed. There are some lovely moments for alto flute, cor anglais and tuned percussion; 'Blu' would be a great companion to a performance alongside 'Bolero' or other dance pieces.

A workout for symphonic band, with all the colour you'd expect from an Elfman score - perfect for ensembles that want to step it up a gear for their seasonal concert.

He wrote his own libretto, basing it on the Italian play L'amore delle tre melarance, or The Love for Three Oranges by Carlo Gozzi, and conducted the premiere, which took place at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921. The 'March' was used by CBS in the radio-drama series 'The FBI in Peace and War' from 1944 to 1958 and also by Prokofiev himself in his ballet, 'Cinderella'. This arrangement uses all the colour of today's symphonic band and would make an excellent programme item in a concert of opera music.

The piece should build up gradually with crescendos and decrescendos carefully observed so that the band swells and fades as a whole, particularly at rehearsal figure B. The chromatic phrases at rehearsal figures B and D need to be smooth and in time, not at all hurried. The melody is a feature for the lower instruments, including tuba, and is an opportunity for these instruments to explore increased ranges and to work on a full well- rounded, lyrical tone.About the composer:Neille Williams is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer based in Canberra, Australia. Originally written for large orchestra, Cuban Overture is a tone poem composed in 1932, inspired by a two-week holiday which Gershwin spent in Havana in the February of that year. It was originally called ‘Rumba’, but the title was later changed to better describe the character and colour of the music.  Caribbean rhythms and Cuban percussion instruments predominate, and Gershwin was keen that the bongo, claves and maracas should be visible and prominent (position them right at the front so all the audience can see - they'll love that!) The main theme was influenced by ‘Échale Salsita’, a popular song of the day, by Ignacio Piñeiro. The premiere was a great success, and the piece has remained a popular part of Gershwin’s oeuvre. Transcribed for symphonic band, with supporting contrabass instruments and European parts.

While trying to search for appropriate titular words which would somehow describe the content of the piece, I kept thinking how light-hearted the musical flow of the whole composition really is. Searching through similar light minded musical content, I did not have to search for long, before I came across the divertimenti of the late 18th century (works by both Wolfgang A. & Leopold Mozart, Haydn, Stamitz, etc.). The informality and casual manner of my piece, as well as the fact that it draws its thematic material from the concept of “absolute†music - without any presupposed program - reminds me of those times, style and the presented musical form established then. 'The City of Manaus' incorporates various musical elements such as multimetre time signatures and vast tambral exploration to represent a chase through the Amazon Jungle. The driving pulse, short note lengths and quick tempo reflect an action-packed chase. This climaxes before a reduction in texture - exploring of the tone colours of the woodwinds, and brass, representative of the birds and pristine environment of the natural world. The tension then grows as the texture thickens before the chase resumes, racing once again through the jungle. The 'City of Manaus' is located deep within the Amazon in Northern Brazil. The actual town was founded in 1693 but the history of colonisation of the area begun in 1499 after the Spanish discovered the mouth of the Amazon River. Being the largest city in the Amazon, Manaus is the centre of life in the region, and the namesake of this piece arises from the way this city seems to be the beacon of humanity in a totally natural landscape. Written for Concert Band, this piece is one which takes the listener on a journey to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to find the 'City of Manaus'. It is suitable for Highschool aged students and professional groups alike and can be performed with flexible instrumentation due to doubling in numerous parts. Grade 2.5-3.
