Over time, I identified a half-dozen ballads and folk tunes that Presley and his writers reworked into hit tunes. I mused on Elvis’ popular title as the King of Rock and Roll, and thought of another king, as Karl L. King is often called the King of the Circus March. I decided to write a march paying tribute to both Elvis Presley and Karl L. King: March: The Kings. I composed the march loosely styled on King’s famous circus marches but overlay the march with five original, public domain ballads and folk tunes later arranged into popular love songs performed by Elvis. • Plaisir d’Amour (Jean-Paul Martini, 1784) • O Sole Mio (Edorado de Capua, 1899) • Muss i denn (Friedrich Silcher, 1827) • Torna a Surriento (Ernesto DeCurtis, 1902) • Aura Lee (George Poulton, 1861) I hope you enjoy this pleasant little novelty piece. Comprising of three movements (listed in detail below) it depicts the stress of an Adventurer and his eventual insanity. Composed for Symphonic Band, I hope you enjoy, The Mad Adventurer. I. Dangerous Waters The Great Adventurer has travelled for many years. He has fought in great battles and discovered beautiful treasures. It is for the immense joy he quests. The adventures continue to become more challenging, yet the Great Adventurer always succeeds. II. The Tormented Heart Contrary to his fun from quests, the Adventurer now has a family back home, and he worries what would happen to them if he didn't return. His constant absence caused by his desire for adventure is straining the relationship with his family. He loves them but is always away from them. All the while, death looms above and threatens to end the adventures. III.The Madman The stress and torment of his quests are finally getting to the Adventurer. His emotions are becoming out of control and his mind, irrational. The Adventurer realizes he must return to his family to save his sanity, if not his life. He sets out on one final quest to return home. The trials more mounting than ever before. The once, Great Adventurer is going insane. Until, finally, he crests the hill, and reunites with his family. In the joyful arms of his wife and kids, he is once again, happy.Note: PDF includes a legal-sized score and a letter-sized set of parts.

I set out to compose a musical setting of the text in hopes that the words and music may be of comfort to others too in seasons of grief, adversity, or doubt. “My tears have been my food both day and night, and all the time, people ask, ‘Where is your God?’ But each day, the Lord pours His unfailing love upon me, and through the night, I sing His songs, praying to God who gives me life.†(Psalm 42:3, 8) I composed the piece originally for a cappella choir, but after finishing, I was inspired to create a transcription for Concert Band as well. This transcription may be performed separately, or combined with choir for more impact if desired.

Published by David Sterrett Music (A0.1039859). This passage from Psalm 42 has been a comfort to me in trying times. I set out to compose a musical setting of the text in hopes that the words and music may be of comfort to others too in seasons of grief, adversity, or doubt. “My tears have been my food both day and night, and all the time, people ask, ‘Where is your God?’ But each day, the Lord pours His unfailing love upon me, and through the night, I sing His songs, praying to God who gives me life.†(Psalm 42:3, 8) I composed the piece originally for a cappella choir, but after finishing, I was inspired to create a transcription for Concert Band as well. This transcription may be performed separately, or combined with choir for more impact if desired.
