A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Some years ago, I saw a video of an orangutang sort of running about with some latin music and it was labled Salsa Time and I knew that someday I would write a piece with that title. Well, once it was finished, and I listened and meditated over what it said to me, what I heard was the westward migration of the early settlers of America, only in and through Mexico. Journey To The Setting Sun became my title, but to give it a bit more authenticity, the title is in Spanish, and has become Viaje al Atardeser.The piece opens with a train whistle. If you have none, the Flute 1 & 2 parts have it simulated. Rehearsal markers 1A through 1D serve as layers that lead to the main melody starting at A. At letter B, the Solo 1st trumpet takes on the melody with a slight variation of rhythm. There is a trombone trio from C to D. If you have 3 stong trombonists, I recommend the Eupf and Baritone TC opt out of playing through this section, in order to highlight your great trombone section. *Optional* You may, at your discretion put a fermata after the first beat of the bar before D and allow your solo trumpeter to play a free form cadenza. The mp3 has a sample of how this would sound. The cadenza would end with the pick-up to letter D and you may feel free to let that high note of the solo trumpet ring for a second or two before cuing the rest of the band in. Although from D to the a tempo 4 bars before E is a trumpet solo, the most crucial part of that section is the tambourine part going into double time, creating that extra pop and sense of urgency.This piece represents a watershed moment in my life, as it is my first composition for Concert Band.I encourage all feedback at sirlunch@gmail.comI hope you enjoy it!

Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was the only woman to hold a professorship at a European Conservatory (Paris) in the 19th Century.  They would only allow her to teach piano, not composition, because she was undeniably a virtuoso pianist.  During her lifetime she mainly composed for piano, but also wrote works for the orchestra, including three symphonies, and a great deal of mixed chamber music. She wrote no works for wind band of any kind, yet she lived in a golden age of especially French band music. As such, I felt a new generation of music students should hear the music of this incredibly talented composer who had the misfortunate of being born female in the 19th Century. This work is certainly characteristic of the Romantic Era and would make a lovely concert overture. the main sub ject of her variations is Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God. If you purchase this score (and like it), please write to me at debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc and I will send you a copy of the wav file as well as a link to her original piano work (I;'ve not taken too many liberties). If you still like it, parts may be had for $100 via Venmo or personal check. Write to debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc..

A few years ago, I attended a concert by the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, a group of passionate students, at the National University of Singapore. They performed Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which has continuously captivated me through the wild, grotesque sounds. Recently, my friend, Joshua suggested that I could write an orchestral transcription for Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. I have decided to keep the instrumentation to a minimum, where smaller size bands can give it a try without the fear of not owning unusual auxiliary instruments, but still able to maintain the original orchestral sounds. The original program notes by Berlioz is as follows: He sees himself at a witches' sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of shades, sorcerers and monsters of every kind who have come together for his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, outbursts of laughter; distant shouts which seem to be answered by more shouts. The beloved melody appears once more, but has now lost its noble and shy character; it is now no more than a vulgar dance tune, trivial and grotesque: it is she who is coming to the sabbath ... Roar of delight at her arrival ... She joins the diabolical orgy ... The funeral knell tolls, burlesque parody of the Dies irae, the dance of the witches. The dance of the witches combined with the Dies irae.

Houdini is a song by English-Albanian singer Dua Lipa. It was released on 10 November 2023 as the lead single from Lipa's upcoming third studio album. The single debuted at number one in Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia and Greece, number two on the UK Singles Chart and in the top ten in Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland. On 27 October 2023, she shared a close-up picture of a key between her teeth, accompanied by the phrase catch me or I go; this was followed by a teaser of the song on her social media a few days later, hinting at the song title. A rearranged combination of numbers would spell out the title Houdini, named after escape artist Harry Houdini. Fans of Lipa also drew parallels to English singer Kate Bush's 1982 song of the same name, who also references Houdini by presenting a key in her mouth on the cover of her album 'The Dreaming' (1982). This catchy pop number is bound to be popular with younger players and audiences are sure to catch on to the disco beat.
