Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1472832). Countess Maria Theodora Paulina Dora Pejačević (10 September 1885 – 5 March 1923) was a Croatian composer, pianist and violinist and one of the first composers to introduce the orchestral song to Croatian music. Her Symphony in F-sharp minor is considered by scholars to be the first modern symphony in Croatian music. Pejačević is noted for her vocal compositions, piano miniatures, and string quartets, which were heavily influenced by the expressionist and modernist trends of the time. In her early career, Pejačević’s primary themes were highly representative of the Romantic period, but this would change after her experience working as a paramedic in the First World War after which her works reflected the philosophic movement of nihilism and discussed motifs of death, isolation, and futility of war. This wonderful 'Elegie', originally composed for violin and piano, dates from 1913, just before the outbreak of war and is dedicated to Johannes Nádherny-Borutin, an important Czech politician. This arrangement has been made as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

The arranger, John O'Reilly, always thinks of Danny when he hears this tune since Mr. O'Reilly's daughter was very close to Danny during their high school years. Danny was a violinist and he loved to play fiddle music. The Wearin' of the Green is in the style Danny enjoyed and the lyrics of the song relate to the struggle of the Irish people as they defied the British oppression. Correlates with Book 2. Page 15.

Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is 1 of 2 band works written by Carl Meinecke although his focus was mostly on orchestra where he was both violinist and conductor. The music was published first by A.E. Fischer in Germany in 1907 and in 1913 by Carl Fischer in the US. The piece is well crafted in the German march style with skillful melodic and contrapuntal writing. There is a refreshing change of meter from cut time to 6/8 at the Trio. Marc Oliver's brand new edition is crisp and clean and the first new edition in nearly a century. 'Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is a welcome addition to the band repertoire in the 21st century.

Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733036). German-born Theodore Moses Tobani was a composer arranger and violinist mostly in Philadelphia. He is said to have composed more than 550 pieces and made over 4500 arrangements. At times he used various pseudonyms such as Florence Reed, Andrew Herman and Theodore Moses under which many of his works were published. This version of The Star-Spangled Banner was the encore piece of a work he called Grand American Fantasia a medley of American songs that was first published in 1906 (when The Banner was still referred to as the unofficial American hymn.) In his arrangement Moses-Tobani wrote (what I call) flying woodwinds--the flutes and clarinets are racing through the skies while the rest of the band plays their boring parts. The words to The Banner are from the poem Defense of Ft. McHenry by Francis Scott Key; the music is derived from To Anacreon in Heaven a popular British and American pub song by John Stafford Smith.
