Do You Hear How Many You Are? for Concert Band was originally written in April and May of 2010 for SATB choir. I made this concert band arrangement in 2012. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. The song is sung from the perspective of children who, upon seeing the Christ Child, ask “What should we give to the Child of the Mother?†First they choose their best-tasting foods: raisins, figs, walnuts and olives; then, a blanket for warmth from the cold. Finally, angels descend from Heaven to cradle the Child, singing “songs of glory that are not of the world.â€The carol may date from 18th-century Catalonia, which is today an autonomous community of Spain lying mostly on the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with Barcelona — Spain's second-most populous city — as its capital.The Spanish guitar master Andres Segovia (1893-1987) often performed Miguel Llobet's (1878-1938) transcription of this simple, lovely tune as an encore.This arrangement is an ideal vehicle to teach lyrical playing and legato style; dynamic control and the shaping of phrases; and the “handing-off†of phrases and phrase segments from one section to another to sustain and complete a musical idea. The theme played by the woodwinds is written to give the listeners a middle eastern feeling. This represents the crusades. The higher brass section play a nice and static counter theme.Part 2: Enchanted DominionThis section a bit mysterious and magic, played by mallets and flutes. The theme from the Oboe represents the ghost of a warlock trapped on the dominion. As we pas trough the dominion we need the protection of the church represented by the Harpsichord (clavecimbel) and clarinets.Part 3: The rustling ForestsAfter leaving the Enchanted Dominion we gallop with our horse trough the Rustling Forests. These forest show fast winds and have a lyric theme played by the trumpets and saxesPart 4: The SquareOnce trough the Forests we get to the Village square where the market is on going. We have several sales men selling their goods. These are represented in the themes of the woodwinds. The confusion gets to much and we try to hide from the sales men. The trumpets represent this part in a piano 5/4 movement which bring a big contrast trough the noises from the market place. In the end we need to get through the market place so we find a way to keep the sales men away by playing a wonderful legato melody which the dwarf’s taught us.Part 5: Dwarf’sThese social and kind people have a little village outside of the town where joyful melodies sound from both children as adults and elderly dwarf’s. the themes are divided under the different solo players of the woodwind sections.Part 6: Run or HideAfter a nice time with the Dwarf’s we continue our path but soon we face a large army coming our way. What do we do Run or Hide? This part is full of different melodies and counter melodies to represent the indecisiveness of the Dark Ages.Part 7: NeverlandWe arrive in the land of the elves where the tenor sax and horns play an agitato atmosphere to represent our hart beat when we see these beautiful creatures. The themes from the flutes and euphoniums show the grace and beauty of the elves. While the harp creates an elf like atmosphere.Part 8 The castle Gardenswe arrive in the castle gardens. These gardens are the most beautiful in the whole land. It makes the orchestra say Ahh. While the percussion section gives it a magical feeling. After being amassed we soon find out that these gardens are made for the Authorities and paid by our tax money which gives us a double feeling. Should this money not be better spend on good music?Part 9 Black Powderafter we find out the castle lord wrongly used or tax money we go and find some black powder to blow him up. After being hunted down by the castle lord trying to get some black powder. We find ourselves in the glorious fight.Part 10: Rageour glorious fight with the castle lord continues into an enormous climax where we are stroke down and ends up with a one way ticket to the graveyard.Part 11: The GraveyardThe whole orchestra sings a spiritual song to guide us into the afterlives. An angle comes to collect our soul (represented by the piccolo flute). And slowly or name is forgotten.

Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.A Supreme Work of Art!The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.Gerald Manning

The music then moves to a majestic trumpet processional. Entitled Soulful Peace, this tune honors those who made it possible for us to feel peace: parents, caregivers, family members, mentors, teachers, friends, and veterans who have served our country. Whether we feel the soulful melody in honor of them or in their memory, they remain an important part of our peace. After shifting to a calming woodwind verse, the processional then crescendos to a very emotive, full band verse. After the climax, the processional settles and gives way to a delicate chorus of It is Well With My Soul. The hymn tune begins delicately in the flutes, yet the brass echo the stately processional. The hymn majestically builds toward its own climax, accompanied by a trumpet fanfare. This triumphant piece reminds us that it can indeed be Well With My Soul!.

Keiron Anderson brings us music for the moment, and perhaps no other moment yet in the 21st Century has revealed the vulnerable nature of humanity, and the interconnectedness of our world more than the COVID-19 pandemic, officially announced on March 11, 2020 by the World Health Organization.  The True Heroes is a piece that tells a part of the dramatic story of the struggles, heartaches and triumphs of the world’s medical professionals, and all who were a part of the health care industry to whom this piece is dedicated.  Using a dissonance in the chords, structured upon two perfect fifths a semi-tone apart, Anderson opens the story with suddenness and a pushed tempo that conveys an urgency and anxiety about the growing pandemic, and depicts how the health care workers are not people with super-powers, but rather individuals who are committed to self-sacrifice in using their skills to save the lives of others. The crisis is not over as we reach the middle of the piece where the tempo slows to a more thoughtful pace, allowing the health care worker (and the listener) a moment to rest, to reflect and to meditate, and to give enough time for the emotions to mend and energy to rebuild while the pandemic rages on around them.  Then the music once again resumes its original pace with growing fanfare for the health care worker and their resilience in the face of a momentous task, leading to a more dramatic and triumphal sound and force to conclude the piece.

She's known as a protector, supplier, and one who grants wishes. Every December 31st, Brazilians celebrate Yemanya by casting white flowers and miniature boats into the sea. If Yemanya grants your wish, her waves will swallow the boat and if she denies the wish the boat will wash up on shore. Yemanya teaches us to dive in at the very moment of golden opportunity, to enjoy the rhythms of life, and to allow all doubts to be washed away. The fluid, oceanic themes of the instruments represent the flow of the water and magic of Yemanya. The piece starts off with a soft wind chime accompanied by gong/tam-tam. Then the vibraphone enters mysteriously as the main theme that drives the whole piece as it subtly changes. The double bass creates a rhythmic pulse beneath the other sections. The gentle melodies in the flute dance around jazzy articulations in the trumpets and saxophones. There's an interplay of Afro-Cuban beats in the marimba and a bossa nova rhythm between the temple blocks and xylophone. Throughout the piece I have tried to capture the water's motion and the ever-changing face of the sea. As the vibraphone returns to the original melody, we are reminded of Yemanya's eternal beauty and peaceful nature.

On December 14, 2012, at 9:35 a.m., the entire country stood motionless, for a horrific act of terror was underway. Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and 6 adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; a moment in history as one of the worst school shootings that our country has ever faced. Every single child which was murdered had a future of their own, taken away at the hands of a ruthless gunman, who in an instant, ended any chance that these 20 children had to have a happy life. Along with these children, were the 6 heroic staff members who so selflessly gave their life in order to stop this perpetrator who came to destroy the fragile object that we all call life. The title of this piece, The Sandy Hook Lullaby, is symbolic to represent the deaths and aftermath on that faithful day. This particular piece is a lullaby to represent the day that the victims lives were taken, ending with a peaceful goodbye. The song starts strong and valiant, to represent the beginning and potential of a new day. As it progresses, the song softens a bit, with clarinet lead, which represents the students learning in the classroom and the staff working as normal. A swell in volume represents the knowledge learned, as they are completely unaware of the events to follow. Halfway through, terror strikes. The percussion solo is representative of the the 5 minutes that the entire attack took place. The entire finale of the song is to represent the peaceful rest of those murdered, the final goodbye. The song ends softly, as the victims are put to rest, and because most of the victims were children, this comes in the form of a lullaby. Just as a loving and caring parent would put their child to sleep with a song, we give our final goodbyes with this Sandy Hook Lullaby. The title was inspired by Romans 8:37, No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.It is my hope that UNCONQUERABLE will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play, and provide other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used to motivate and encourage their students.UNCONQUERABLE is dedicated to all of my former music students in the Madison County Florida School System, who I had the privilege of teaching from 1974-2016.
