The last of his Three German Dances was most likely composed for a ball in Vienna's Imperial Court, and like many artists today, Mozart took a just add sleigh bells approach to creating a wintry atmosphere. Sleigh rides were a popular winter pastime in Vienna during Mozart's time, and it is said that the composer wrote this piece to mimic the sensation of going up and down the snow-covered hills on an 18th century sleigh.

A symphonic representation of a caravan crossing a desert, the piece moves from a simple march feel slowly crescendoing to a brief climax before settling down for the softer center section. Following a fanfare to herald the next day's journey, the main melody builds through the band to a crashing finale.Grade level would be 3-4. Primary key of piece is d minor, and while the central section technically changes keys, it is notated entirely with accidentals. Solos in flute, oboe, bassoon, bari sax, and trombone. Creature began as a joke in high school between a friend of mine and me where we described the radical mood swings of our band directors as a creature coming forth from inside of them. Think about the alien from Alien 3 where it opened its mouth and its tongue was a little alien head with teeth of its own. I thought it would be fun to write a piece of music around this creature, so I wrote a short series of story beats and then some music around it. The full story is, unfortunately, lost to history, but the music survived the twenty-five years since its original composition, and in honor of my young self, I merely edited any typos and left it just as I wrote it when I was a seventeen-year-old high school senior. This was my first, solo-written, full band composition, and one can hear that I was a huge fan of Igor Stravinsky. This is not an easy piece to play. It has time changes aplenty, fast runs in the upper woodwinds, very exposed parts in nearly every section, large interval leaps, and spares hardly anyone's range. The eighth note remains constant across the 4 and 8 time signatures, and the breakdown of the complex time signatures is apparent in how the eighth notes are barred. As a conductor, it will be challenging as well, but I survived it on two occasions as both a senior in high school and in front of a military band, so it can be done. So enjoy the musical story of a creature who attacks people in its rage and hunger before it is chased and defeated by an angry mob ... but did it really die? War, by its nature, claims the lives of those who enter it, and over the course of history, many have fallen in the service of their countries who have gone to war for one reason or another. Fanfare for the Fallen seeks to honor those who have fallen in service and conjure the image of them marching into their glorious afterlife. Christianity holds that there is no greater love than laying down one's life for another, and many cultures believe that dying in battle yields glory in the great beyond. So whether marching into heaven, Valhalla or some other bright light at the end of the tunnel, let this music provide the soundtrack of trumpeting angels and one last ticker tape parade as these warriors are welcomed into their eternal home.This is a piece of intermediate difficulty with a nice melody and a John Williams' Olympic Fanfare feel to it. While the trumpets soar in their high registers for the heralding sections, the range for the rest of the piece (and the rest of the band) stays mostly in the center of the instruments. While 32nd notes are found here and there, the tempo sitting at around 80 keeps their difficulty, as well as the 16th note woodwind runs, in check. George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.

The piece is at least a grade 3 due to competing time signatures, contrapuntal melodies, and persistent upper register work across several sections.Written during my time in the Army, this march emerged as a sort of musical joke. The melody and rhythm parts alternate between 6/8 and 2/4 (or 2 over 3) time throughout the piece with the quarter and dotted-quarter keeping the same beat. It incorporates nearly every march convention that my friend and I could think of from the low brass taking over the strain and piccolo obbligato to the baffling euphonium arpeggios in the final strain along with the equally bafflingly obnoxious trombone countermelody. At the same time, it breaks convention by granting the horn players the melodic line in the trio section instead of giving them the back beats they love so much. One of the stranger jokes whose meaning one might miss is the mix up of beats at the key change which was done deliberately to put the generals and first sergeants out of step. It also contains a symphony's worth of stingers at the end (because 19-year-old me was hilarious ... apparently).

Written in 1910 and dedicated to the music students of Morley College, Gustav Holst wrote Christmas Day for choir and a sizable orchestra to perform a series of old Christmas carols. Themes and variants of In Dulci Jubilio (Good Christian Men Rejoice), God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The First Nowell, and Come Ye Lofty, Come Ye Lonely are interwoven throughout the piece with Holst's clever craftsmanship, and although the composer and his heirs thought little of the work, it has enjoyed popularity as a seasonal choir piece. This setting revises the original orchestral/choir version note for note for the modern concert band with no concessions made except for some slight key shifts in consideration for band. This composer also likes featuring neglected sections, when possible, so the opening alto solo is arranged for a lone tuba to take before the piece opens up for everyone else.
