This arrangement pays homage to the flavor of the original by using a traditional chamber wind quintet for the opening measures. The solo parts are advanced, technical, difficult, and hugely fun to play! The band parts are modest in range and difficulty, designed to be playable by a good high school band. Duration: 8'00.Concertutti is a portmaneau, a made-up word combining concerto (a composition for one or more soloists with a large ensemble) and tutti (everyone). To my knowledge this is the first concerto for three trumpets to have been composed in the past 250 years. (The only other triple concertos in the repertoire are one by J.S. Bach and two by Antonio Vivaldi.) Concertutti was commissioned by The Northwest Passage Trumpet Trio and was premiered by them on May 3, 2019 with the Grove City College Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Tedford. A revised version was performed by The Northwest Passage Trumpt Trio on June 30, 2019 with the Hollidaysburg Community Band, under the direction of Doug Stephens. The current edition is a second revision, with the chief differences of being over three minutes shorter and sporting a new coda.

Joseph Hasper #753375. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134). There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

Some of my favorite memories as a student in public school band include performing various arrangements of J.S. Bach. I loved sitting in the trumpet section listening across the ensemble to how the various melodic lines would rapidly fizz around from instrument to instrument.This short, two movement work is designed to foster this listening experience in your students. The first movement consists of a simple binary form, with woodwinds and brass trading off a slow melodic line. The ensemble then combines to allow for the exploration of top to bottom, back to front balance and blend without having to worry about too much technique. There are also moments of modernity in the harmonic structure designed to help anchor the movement to the present.The second movement is a fugue with a long melodic subject and two countersubjects, the point of which is to apply the listening lessons from the first movement to the more technical aspects of the second. Fugue subjects are announced with percussion entrances to focus the listening experience across the ensemble and the audience.

Here is a compelling setting of Martin Luther’s hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (EIN FESTE BURG) by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1750). Originally composed for organ, it has been arranged for Concert Band with optional keyboard. Two harmonizations of the isometric version of the hymn are also provided. The first is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals. The second is based on the concluding Chorale of Cantata 80 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Including the music of both Bach and Pachelbel, this arrangement serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque era and the contributions of great Lutheran composers. It also provides opportunities to discuss the time of the Reformation. For worship the arrangement can be played alone or it can be used to accompany congregational singing. The Full Score is formatted for legal-size paper (8.5x14) while the parts are formatted for letter-size paper (8.5x11). Additional arrangements are available for Brass, Woodwind Quintet, and Strings.
