While Patriotic Salute starts in the Key of F before settling in the key of Bb 2/3's of the way through, this arrangement by no means feels like a piece that sticks to just two keys, as modulations and borrowed chords are filled from top to bottom. Each section is also written in such a way that the chords are not only cross-sectional, but also fulfilled within the section, adding to the lush textures. As each instrument’s ranges are stretched high and low, so are the intricacies of each passage that exemplify each instrument’s unique technicalities. Patriotic Salute is not only satisfying to the audience members, but also enjoyable to the performers. Naval Reserve March Composed by John Philip Sousa Arranged for Concert Band by Jari Villanueva To the Officers and Men of the US Naval Reserve Intro: The song Blue RidgeFor Full Concert BandFull and set of Parts includedSousa's march The Naval Reserve was one of his naval salutes and dedicated to the officers and men of the Naval Reserve. The march incorporates his song, Blue Ridge, I’m Coming Back To You. The lyrics of the refrain begin, Blue Ridge, Blue Ridge, I hear the bugle call. Fittingly enough Sousa wrote a bugle call preceding the song which appears as the Trio in the march. This delightful bugle march is accompanied by a basic rhythmic figure on the 1st and 3rd beats of each measure and a sparse woodwind line. This band arrangement by Jari Villanueva is a delightful setting of the original arrangement that gives the woodwinds and brass a chance to shine in different sections. Pay careful attention to the dynamics to make this march really shine! A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. "God Defend New Zealand" was written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish-born, Victorian-raised immigrant Thomas Bracken of Dunedin. A competition to compose music for the poem was held in 1876 by The Saturday Advertiser and judged by three prominent Melbourne musicians, with a prize of ten guineas. The winner of the competition was the Tasmanian-born John Joseph Woods of Lawrence, New Zealand who composed the melody in a single sitting the evening after finding out about the competition. The song was first performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Princes Street, Dunedin, on Christmas Day, 1876. [Wikipedia]

I have enjoyed performing this with bands often in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia at concerts and at patriotic ceremonies and celebrations. It is approximately 2 ½ minutes in length. It is a medium difficulty level however with the generous use of cross cuing less experienced players could perform this. This arrangement uses the time signatures of 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 throughout and the keys of F, Eb, and G major. It includes indications when to stagger breathe. I have included generous cross cues so that it may be performed with varied instrumentation. I have included the pedal markings in the vibraphone part. It features the tubas playing the melody in counterpoint with the horns and euphoniums the first time the melody is stated. This arrangement may be performed: 1. Brass only (Play all cues) +/- Percussion 2. Woodwind only (Clarinets play Trumpet parts and all other Woodwinds play all cues) +/- Percussion 3. Several combinations of Brass, Woodwinds and Percussion Feel free to experiment with this flexible arrangement. There are many possibilities!
