Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917412). The Four Seasons in the Basque Country is a 4 movement symphony for concert band. It is the Third Prize Winner of the 2020 American Prize in Composition - Concert Band. Grade 5, duration 27 minutes. The piece depicts four different places in the Basque country that the composer feels best show the changes of season. The first movement is Winter in the Costa Norte (Galerna). Galerna is on the northerncoast and is subject to harsh storms in the winter. As the piece starts off with a light-hearted dance in thepiccolo, a storm is approaching from afar. At first the storm seems to be in the distance but as it comes closer it overtakes the festivities in a bluster. For a short time two conductors are needed as the concertband is split into two groups – one showing the light-hearted dance led by the piccolo, the other thecacophony of the storm led by the percussion. The storm overtakes everything as it ends the movement with a flourish.The second movement Spring in Rioja Alavesa is a calming contrast to the first movement like the freshness of a spring day. The sun rises and shines beams of light onto the acres of grape vines. After a timea short rain comes to refresh and clean the plants.The third movement Autumn at the Guggenheim Museum is in a traditional 3rd movement form of a symphony, minuet and trio, but the harmonies sometimes use bitonality, having the melody in one key while the accompaniment is in another to suggest surrealism. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbaois one of the world’s most famous museums, not only for the surreal art inside, but also because of the architecture of the building itself.The fourth movement Summer in Bilbao is based on a dance melody composed in the Ezpata- dantza Basque style. It employs a rhythmic element with alternating 6/8 and 3â„4 meters where the eighth notes are basically equal, but in the dance the 3â„4 meter is actually a little bit longer. This type of subtlemanipulation of rhythm is used similarly in the Viennese Waltz, when the 3rd beat would be stretched outto accommodate the dancers. The Ezpata-dantza dance continues until the Altza Gastiak, the officialsong of the Bilbao Athletic Club, the local soccer team of Bilbao, is heard. After this the Ezpata-dantzamelody is transformed from a happy dance to a triumphant melody and rousing finale.In The Four Seasons in the Basque Country all of the themes are original except for the short excerpt ofAltza Gastiakin the 4th movement. Some themes are composed in the style of Basque folk dances.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over one hundred compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe that have been performed extensively throughout the world. Many of his compositions are available on ITunes, Youtube and Soundcloud.He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanishcomposers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanishbands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize.His compositions are recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Recordsand others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University.He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida

Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1371307). MarÃa Teresa Gertrudis de Jesús Carreño GarcÃa (December 22, 1853 – June 12, 1917) was a Venezuelan pianist, soprano, composer, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year concert career, she became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the Valkyrie of the Piano. Carreño was an early adopter of the works of one of her students, American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) and premiered several of his compositions across the globe. Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances.The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time.This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. Hewitt's original song gained some local popularity; however, throughout most of the country, people began singing the poet's words to a popular drinking song then known to many Americans, English composer John Stafford Smith's To Anacreon in Heaven (originally written for a popular gentleman's club of amateur musicians in London, the Anacreontic Society). Whereas John Stafford Smith's music was borrowed for the poem, Hewitt's music was especially composed for the poem. I was asked by Mitch Sturman, the band director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, to arrange the original piano music for his band to play at his annual spring Concert of Premieres where he presented new works he had commissioned for his band from well-known band composers, and arrangements of neglected works he felt were worthy of performance. This was one of those neglected worthy pieces by an American composer for an American poem. It is orchestrated for flute, oboe, clarinets 1-3, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, bassoon, French horn, trumpets 1-2, baritone horn, trombone, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, and glockenspiel. .

It was composed to feature the orchestral differences and colors in the symphonic band. There are several featured soloists throughout the piece, especially a long extended solo for alto saxophone. The piece also uses many textural variations showing several sections of chamber music. Pico del Teide is often selected as a contest piece when bands compete, especially in Spain. Pico del Teide was composed in 2005 and was premiered March 10, 2006 by Felipe Neri and the Banda Municipal of Tenerife. It won First Prize in the II Concurso Bienal de Composición de Música para Banda Ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. The piece is programmatic as it depicts a person climbing through the different sections of the Teide mountain - Los Roques, Las Cañadas, Pico del Teide, Teide and Pico Viejo to the top of Pico del Teide, which is the highest point in the Canary Islands.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. This wonderful 'Elegie', originally composed for violin and piano, dates from 1913, just before the outbreak of war and is dedicated to Johannes Nádherny-Borutin, an important Czech politician. In 1871, Holmès became a French national and added the accent to her last name. 'Clair de Lune' is the second of the 'Trois Petites Pièces' for flute and piano, composed in 1896, bring together the homelands dear to Holmès’ heart: Ireland, her country of origin, and France, her country of adoption. She composed very few pieces for organ but this one, O Traurigkeit, O Herzeleid comes from a collection of five, drawing upon tunes previously used by composers from Bach to Brahms - this Prelude & Fugue well and truly establishes Smyth's accomplishment at the organ and transfers very well to concert band. The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Subsequent research has concluded that the wind piece Brahms used as a source does not fit Haydn’s style. Among these composers was a young conductor/composer, named Gustav Westing III. The two of us found much in common with each other, including the fact that we were fraternity brothers. We continued to communicate with each other after the opera project, and became great friends, as well as sharing our music with each other for review and suggestions.Gustav told me one time that he was the Assistant Conductor of the AMERICAN PATRIOT WINDS in suburban Atlanta, and in the fall of 2015 called me with a commission to compose a piece for their spring 2016 concert. The result of this commission was A Festive Overture. The piece was composed to celebrate the joy of making music within a community.A Festive Overture was premiered on March 10, 2016 by the American Patriot Winds in Woodstock, Georgia.

In classical music, two composers come to mind: Johann Pachebel for his Canon in D and Emil Reznecek for his overture to Donna Diana. I am certain that they have written a lot more music, but we only know them for the above-mentioned works. The same is true in wind band music. The composer in question is one, Charles E. Duble. His one big hit is his circus march, Bravura. One of his lesser known marches is Wizard of the West. It was originally written in 1908 and dedicated To A. R. Wheeler, Musical Director, Howes Great London Shows. To this day, however, this occidental expert remains a mystery because he has not come out from behind the curtains. However, the western wizard does make his presence known in the euphonium section-especially in the trio.

Sinfonietta (alternate title SinfonÃa de Vino y Aceite de Magallon) is a composition for concert band that can be played by any band whether it has 100 players or 30 players. It is at grade 3 level of difficulty and has several substitute parts for ensembles that may not have complete instrumentation. Although the scoring includes piccolo, oboes, bassoons, and French horns, these instruments are not needed to command a good performance.Sinfonietta adheres to classical forms of symphonies by composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The forms are very clear so the players of the band can learn this important history. The first movement is in standard Sonata Allegro form.The second movement is in A B A form and features a solo trumpet. The third movementis in a Rondo form (A B A C A) with three distinct themes. The work was commissioned in 2017 by the town of Magallón, Spain in celebration of the town’s industries of wine and olive oil. The mayor of the town of 1,000 inhabitants, Victor Manuel Chueca Rodriguez, was specific in his request for a composition at grade 3 level of difficulty. He also suggested the title as Symphony. Since it a three-movement composition instead of a four-movement composition (the normal Minuet and Trio movement is not included in this piece), the title of Sinfonietta instead of Symphony is used.Gregory Fritzeis a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor.
