Torchio: En Archè en o Logos (2007)A deep and powerful reflection on the first lines of John's Gospel and the mistery of the Creation and of the beginning. The fascinating sound of ancient Greek creates a dialectic relationship with the modern international english language. All happens wihin a very interesting proposal for an avantgarde sacred music fitted for liturgical uses too. A considerable number of singers and of strings is required in order to create an adequate sound space and colour. Particular care is required by the intonation and the creation and substain of the right tone (which are perhaps the biggest challenge by the piece) but the entire music created by the phonemata and the training about it could be very funny and very precious and helpful for an interesting growth of a very fine Choir. The piece won the International Composition Competition Anima Mundi organized by the Opera Primaziale di Pisa in 2009.Stefano Maria TorchioItalian Violinist, Composer and Conductor, spent his education between Italy and the University of Music and Performing Art in Vienna, where he studied Orchestral Conducting with U. Lajovic and J. Wildner and Choir Conducting with E. Ortner and T. Lang. Further studies made Torchio in Violin, Composition and Organ at the Music Conservatory of Padua (his home town).He won prizes by international composition competitions like the Anima Mundi of the Opera Primaziale di Pisa, the A. Casella of the Accademia Chigiana of Siena, In memoriam... Johannes XXIII of Comune di Sotto il Monte, the MiniMusicDrama of Ovada and the Composition Prize of the Music Conservatory of Padua. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522228). The text to this new SSA setting is by Peter Abelard, the medieval French scholastic philosopher, theologian and logician. The setting gives opportunities for soprano and alto solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there are two a cappella sections in the arrangement. The vocal parts all lie easily within average range. The keyboard part, with its plodding bass line (which may be doubled on double bass if required) gives the impression of the slow walk of Jesus to the Cross. This is a melancholy, reflective arrangement. Other SSA titles in this series of three Easter canticles are “My Song is Love Unknown†(Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and “A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866â€. In the audio sample, soprano 1 is played by the flute, soprano 2 by the oboe and alto by the clarinet.

Fauré composed his Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, between 1887 and 1890. The choral-orchestral setting of the shortened Catholic Mass for the Dead in Latin is the best-known of his large works. Its focus is on eternal rest and consolation. Fauré's reasons for composing the work are unclear, but do not appear to have had anything to do with the death of his parents in the mid-1880s. He composed the work in the late 1880s and revised it in the 1890s, finishing it in 1900.This is a performance version of no IV Pie Jesu (Pie Jesus) for double wind quintet/bass.The soprano solo is given to the oboe.In seven movements, the work is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir, orchestra and organ. Different from typical Requiem settings, the full sequence Dies irae is omitted, replaced by its section Pie Jesu. The final movement In Paradisum is based on a text that is not part of the liturgy of the funeral mass but of the burial.

Parts: 2 pg. Duration with optional repeat: 7:36 Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring Bach composed a cantata called Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Though it is the 32nd cantata, it is listed as BWV 147. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is the 10th movement of the cantata. It was customary to use previous melodies as a basis for a new work - a practice called Cantus prius factus. So, the chorale melody for this piece is a historic tune called Werde munter, mein Gemüthe. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is customarily performed at weddings, and during major church seasons such as Easter and Christmas. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, in addition to his complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development, his sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.

In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available. As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.) Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell.
