Published by Indie Classical Publications (A0.971821). A TRAIN THROUGH YORKSHIRE was one of my earliest works for band. Composed in 2007, it was inspired by the train rides I took while studying abroad in Great Britain. The Yorkshire area is especially beautiful, and the music was inspired by my memory of sitting on a train with a tea in hand on a drizzly day. However, I was never fully satisfied with the work, as it felt incomplete. One reason was that I was rushed to meet a short deadline when composing this piece. It wasn't until the summer of 2018 that I decided to do it justice and revise it. I also felt like it deserved an orchestral version. This new and final version is a little shorter than the original and offers a better balanced orchestration. Level: grade 3+ (intermediate) ; Duration: About 5 minutes, 15 seconds

Driving through the Berkshires one day in Western Massachusetts, I came across such an event when three short but very intense storms hit one after the other. Lightning flashed on either side of the highway, thunder crashed deafeningly all around me, and a torrent of blinding rain flooded the landscape. In between each storm was a very short yet magnificent and unsettling calm that allowed the sun to peek through the clouds to reveal a beautiful blue sky. Berkshire Storms aims to emulate these brief tempests with an uneasy calm between each of them. The blue sky opens up at the end, but the storm has the last say. -Douglas GerberDuration: 4:00.

Nu Tal (Mi Tierra) or My Land, is one of my first orchestral works, commissioned by Dr. Irving Ramirez, associate conductor of the El Salvador’s Symphony Orchestra.At the beginning, the idea was to set four small sketches of different images from my country. The 3rd movement was composed first, at that point I didn’t have a name for the work but after a talk with my mother in law, Aracely Sánchez; who is an expert in Salvadoran folklore, I decided to change the work’s name to Nu Tal (My Land in Nahuatl) and use some elements from our folklore. Then, I combined the idea I had from the images and the folk rhythms and tunes to create the whole work.The first movement of the work contains actually two movements. The first part is an image of a plane going to El Salvador. While the plane comes out of the clouds a beautiful land is seen through the window until the plane lands safely at its destination. Immediately, the folk part of the movement (movement II) begins with the invocation performed by the shell to the four cardinal points and then an autochthonous sound is presented welcoming our guests to this magical land, and the theme develops until the end of the movement.The third part was the first composed and it is an image including various ideas that represents a vision of El Salvador from different perspectives and the complexity of the different generations that are currently creating El Salvador’s demographic landscape.The fourth movement is an amalgamate of folkloric ideas and images. The beginning is the call from a church by the bells, then the brass presents the main theme of the movement, which is based on the Gregorian chant Salve Regina that I deconstructed using different rhythmic meters. Fat Fred and Sleazy Louise Got together one day; Fat Fred was easy to please, And she was going his way.... This is a reworking of a fun piece I originaally wrote over 30 years ago, and I have to admit that after all this time I can't actually remember why I gave it the title Sleazy Louise. But in the slow, smoochy middle section (not included in the sample recording) you'll hear that there is something a bit disreputable, down-at-heel and nicotine-stained about this lady. Scored for full orchestra, including alto and tenor saxophones, there are optional additional parts for baritone saxophone, Eb horn, treble clef trombone in Bb, easy violin and descant recorder. The violin cues in the clarinet part should only be played if the violins need reinforcing. Sleazy Louise has been performed in several countries, notably when some orchestral players fitted silly words to it and sang it to startled onlookers in Red Square, Moscow!
