Ode an die Freude An 8 minutes version of the famous hymn for orchestra and/or choir with an recognizable introduction. You will need this arrangement if you want the Ode an die Freude to begin with a worthy introductionGreatly reduced version of the 3rd and 4th movements of the 9th symphony. The hymn Ode an die Freude can also be performed as a single movement. Heavy brass has been added as an ad libitum instrumentation, to allow the hymn to be performed with full orchestra on occasion.The 4-part chorus can be sung even by a non-professional choir, and even by the audience, because of a convenient tessitura in A major in the hymn. The reduction of elements used from the 3rd movement leads - as an introduction - to the first passage of the hymn, and with material from the 4th movement it leads to the closing hymn. The hymn shows the lyrics for 3 verses.It has been orchestrated and arranged with full respect for Beethoven's intentions, but with an open mind to the needs of contemporary events and the needs of concert organizations and audiences. For the convenience of these events, heavy brass has been included for modern orchestras - even tuba which essentially doubles the original contrafagotto.This arrangement can be performed with, or without, a choir. To understand why I composed this arrangement of Silent Night, Holy Night in the way that I did, close your eyes and imagine taking a holy journey or pilgrimage to visit the Holy Nativity. I musically convey what I imagined it would have been like to make this long journey like the Three Wise Kings and others did to follow the Star of Bethlehem to see the Blessed Child that prophets had foretold. As each person begins the journey, you will hear the distinctly grave motif indicative of the quest that was before them. The brass gloriously herald one's approach to the Holy Nativity coupled with the commencement of the Silent Night, Holy Night carol theme upon one's arrival. The music Silent Night, Holy Night was originally composed in 1818 by Franz X. Gruber. The original lyrics were were written in German by James Mohr also in 1818. This Christmas Classic was translated to English in 1859 by John Young. I wrote this arrangement yesterday as an intermediate level piano solo.This is a re-imagined version of Franz Gruber's Christmas Carol classic Silent Night, Holy Night. Section A begins with a poignant introduction in C Minor, then modulates to C Major for the main Silent Night, Holy Night Christmas Carol theme in Section B. Section C returns to a new version of its introductory C Minor motif. The song segues back to its Silent Night, Holy Night theme, but modulating to D Major for its closing.F. This piece was inspired by some cinematographic music and composers but also integrates some cultural background of the composer. Composer Pagán-Pérez followed some teachings organized in Volume I of the Suzuki Methods to compose the piece for the string sections and a grade level 4 for the wind and brass instruments (rhythms, melodies, or range). The key of G Major can be a challenge for the winds and brass (especially for clarinets and trumpets in Bb), but music teachers, conductors, and students will manage the challenges by practicing scales and arpeggios. To play it is to be taken inside a sound world greater than the instrument itself. In other words, it seems to demand orchestration. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ?? (Puckâ??s Dance), concluding with an epic finale (The Sunken Cathedral). The Seattle Times Reviewer Tom Keogh wrote about this arrangement, “A highlight is certainly the silky grandeur of Henry Mancini’s theme for Blake Edwards’ TV series “Mr. Luckyâ€â€¦â€ This arrangement draws inspiration from the record version with an insert Mancini wrote later. The Hammond B3 organ solo as played by the great Hollywood session musician Buddy Cole is transcribed note for note in this arrangement. This part can be alternately played by Rhodes or other keyboard. The written out solo is a suggestion and may be improvised by keyboard player. Throughout this arrangement Mancini’s voicings and orchestrational content have been preserved. Options It is possible to perform this without Hammond B3 or like keyboard solo. In one version in Mancini’s hand writing he called for a Flugal Horn solo. This could be used to replace the keyboard solo. However, a cut can also be made in lieu of solos from B to Bar 50 or D. The song echoes the last words of Tiny Tim and the crowning song sung by Andrea Bocelli, but written by film music legend Alan Silvestri (Back to the future, Polar Express among many others) builds on that phrase as its opening line to create a joyful epic anthem.This version requires a tenor or soprano soloist with the option of SATB chorus, and emulates the original soundtrack but set in a lower key since few singers necessarily have the vocal capacity of Bocelli to ping out a routine top B. A version will be available on this site in the original higher key for the braver subscriber.We commend this song (and arrangement) to any event organisers of a large scale Christmas or church orchestral event, or a film concert any time of year.
