I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. The title refers to Miacomet, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. This work is one of a variety of pieces deeply connected to the landscape of Nantucket. The inspiration for the work was an oil painting, Path to Miacomet (2006), by Loretta Yoder; its fervency of color and landscape provided the poetic image that drives the work. The music itself was worked out during a the early hours of darkness on the actual beach of Miacomet. As the sun set, and darkness covered the landscape, only the passionate sound of the surf remained. The music is fervent and searching in tone. It begins with a roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material-a simple lament-like theme in a folkinflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this time it is whispered. The movement winds down to a distant and reposed conclusion. About the piece'To The Moon' takes inspiration from the Earth's Moon, the beauty andmajesty of the celestial body and all it encompasses. It also charts the energy and excitement surrounding the space race and the ultimate goal to get to the Moon! The piece helps to explore extended tonalities and considers a different approach to Orchestral writing and performance choreography.This piece can be performed by any number of performers, ideally, traditional Orchestral numbers work well but experimentation with larger/fewer numbers on various parts within the different 'ensembles' can produce exciting results.Performance directionsThe ideal performing conditions for this piece are that the orchestra are split into 4 'ensembles' as indicated in the score. Each ensemble is grouped in a way that means all ensembles are pointing to the centre (see diagram 1 below). The audience should similarly be positioned around the room in a circle behinf each of the ensembles. Therefore, an ideal focal point for this performance would be a visual representation of the Moon in the centre of the room, ideally lit in some way. Representations of the Moon may take the form of a 3D lit representation (potentially made, perhaps a local Art project) or a projected representation onto the floor of the performance space. TheMoon should be of sufficient size as to not be lost in the space and careful planning should be done to ensure optimal visual effect. The role of the conductor during the performance ideally would be minimal, perhaps sat in one of the ensembles providing minimal direction. However, due to the capabilities of the performers, the conductor may have to take a more active role in the performance. When the London Medical Orchestra commissioned me to write something for their 70th anniversary, neither of us expected a symphony. The inspiration came from cathedral architecture, the grand entrance of the West Door, the Nave that draws the eye from arch to arch, the serenity and peace of the Choir and the magnificence of the Tower. The ideas grew from sketches in my notebook to great arching structures, linking the movements and developing with each iteration. My personal favourite is the 3rd movement, The Choir, with its extraordinary sense of space and intimacy, recalling the peace in the choir of Beauvais Cathedral (still the tallest in the world). Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. The ground breaking Netflix epic TV biopic series was indeed a huge sea change in home streaming content output, bringing together some of Britain's biggest names in theatre, film and TV to portray the history of Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years as the UK monarch. Controversial at times, it had many critics but it was hugely popular with no less than 4 actresses taking on her portrayal.The respect, sensitivity and gravitas we would expect for a histirical drama production like this was self evident from the opening credits and the accompanying music. The theme that Balfe, Gregson Williams and Zimmer created perfectly framed and set up each episode beautifully. A little known fact is that it is based on a song written 400 years before it by Henry Purcell in his 'semi-opera' KING ARTHUR.
