Composed in June & July 2020 & completed on the 19th July 2020. As a former Double Bass player, I thought it was about time a composed a concerto for my former instrument. The Concerto uses a relatively small orchestra (Flute, Oboe, Cor Anglais, 2 Clarinets, Bassoon, 2 Horns, Timpani, Harp & Strings), the string section should not be too large, 8,8,6,6,3, would be a preferable size. The solo Double Bass doesn't have a large amount of carrying power & so the dynamics for the soloist are marked up, as the MIDI playback isn't great for a solo Bass, the soloist's dynamics have been notched up still further in places for MIDI playback purposes, but can be adjusted down in concert performance. The bass clef has largely been used for the solo purely because the tenor clef option sounds an octave too high on the Musescore program. The Concerto is in 3 movements and about 17 minutes in duration.Parts are available upon request.

Written originally for the 1986 Sean Connery/Christopher Lambert film HIGHLANDER it highlighted the incredible range of musical output the band were capable of, being best known for their rock music output. It became a poignant and wistful anthem for the great Freddie Mercury who died only a matter of 5 years later.It is the most incredible song and in this arrangement combines symphony orchestra, with rock singer, rhythm section and for added value optional SATB chorus, bringing an additional texture to what is already an epic piece. The Youtube link below (in the lower key of C# Minor) illustrates the power of this version in an incarnation recorded during lockdown in 2020 with the combined forces of the Welsh National Opera orchestra and chorus and Welsh, TV stage and Hollywood actor star Luke Evans. All individual tracks and performances were recorded in their singers and musicians own homes, then mixed, spliced and compiled into what many have now come to regard as a classic.Both this and the WNO version were arranged by John Langley and pay a respectful tribute to the original version and its composer Brian May. We commend this for any concert of film or popular music with your professional, semi-professional or intermediate orchestra, choir and soloist. Upon release, recognition arrives.Duration: 8 - 9 mins.I was specifically asked to write a work where everyone had something to play. As is my usual style, I tend to allow the second players and less-prominent instruments a chance to shine, and in general shake up the usual orchestral hierarchy. (The second violins, for example, even get their own solo passage!)The wind parts are much more individualized, where the first part may have a completely different line than the second.A colleague who is a trombone player challenged me to write parts that sing for his instrument; hence the word dolce occurs in the low brass parts.
