German-born composer Emilie Mayer (1812-1882) wrote and published music during a time period that was challenging for a female composer. Doing so under the long shadows of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven complicated the situation, yet Mayer prospered and was quite successful during her lifetime. Sadly, despite this early success, her works have not received the number of performances they deserve. Faust Overture, premiered shortly before Mayer’s death, is by far her most successful orchestral work. In it, one can clearly hear the influence of Beethoven. This edition is based entirely on Mayer’s 1880 publication. It is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/ inconsistent dynamics and articulations. As with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any potential copyright issues. Parts can be used in analog form – printed on paper – or uploaded as a digital part onto a reading device such as an iPad for performance. Other than the fact that Sousa’s “thunderer” was undoubtedly a Mason, his identity may never be revealed. “The Thunderer” march was dedicated to Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, of Washington, D.C., and it was composed on the occasion of the Twenty-fourth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment. The conclave was held in October 1889 and was sponsored by Columbia Commandery No. 2. Sousa had been “knighted” in that organization three years earlier.“The Thunderer” was Mrs. John Philip Sousa’s favorite march. This was revealed by their daughter Helen, who also surmised that the “thunderer” might have been her father’s salute to the London Times, which was known as “the thunderer.” It has since been determined that Sousa probably had no association with the newspaper at that time, however. The “thunderer” might have been one of the men in charge of making arrangements for the 1889 conclave–in particular, Myron M. Antonín Dvořák wrote a total of nine symphonies, the most recognizable of which is his Symphony No. 9, dubbed as the “New World Symphony.” The second movement, Largo, is a lovely representation of how a European composer heard a uniquely American voice, that of Harry Burleigh. The iconic English horn solo in Largo just sounds like it came from the New World. This new edition is nearly identical to the original score with a few adjustments. The clarinet parts are exclusively for clarinet in A, the horn parts are for horn in F, and the trumpet parts are for trumpet in C. As with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any copyright issues in the way parts are used. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognization her talents deserved. Due to a number of factors, her orchestral compositions were not even published until the early 2000s.This edition is based entirely on Smith’s original manuscript. The edition is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/inconsistent dynamics and articulations. The original hand-written manuscript contains many additional markings in pencil (also included in this edition), apparently added after the inked manuscript was complete.Parts are also available, and as with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any potential copyright issues.
