Keith Mansfield (born 1941 in London, England) is a British composer and arrangerknown for his creation of prominent television theme tunes, including the Grandstandtheme for the BBC.Mansfield's works include The Young Scene (the original 1968 theme to The Big Match), Light and Tuneful (the opening theme for the BBC's coverage of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships), World Champion (the closing theme for NBC's coverage of the same tournament), and World Series (used for the BBC's athletics coverage). One of his library music recordings, Teenage Carnival, was used as the theme to the cult 1960s ITV children's television series Freewheelers. He has also composed film scores for British movies such as Loot (1970) and Taste of Excitement (1970), and the western Three Bullets for a Long Gun (1971). He also scored the start-up and shutdown themes for Granada Television in 1978, which were used for ten years before it switched to 24-hour television.

Composer and conductor Ronnie Hazlehurst, who also produced themes for such series as Are You Being Served?, Yes Minister, and Only Fools and Horses, created the theme for the show. The BBC initially disliked Hazlehurst's theme, feeling it was not proper for a comedy programme to have such mellow music. He was asked to play the music faster for more comedic effect but eventually his original slower version was accepted. A jauntier, upbeat version was played by a brass band in the episode Full Steam Behind. The theme, an instrumental work, featured lyrics three times. The 1981 Christmas special, Whoops, had two verses of lyrics written by Roy Clarke that were performed over the closing credits. The 1983 film, Getting Sam Home, used those two verses, with an additional two and played them over the opening credits. Another altered version was sung during Compo's funeral in the 2000 episode Just a Small Funeral. Bill Owen also wrote a different version of the lyrics but this version was never used during an episode of the show. Composing the score for each episode until his death in 2007, Hazlehurst spent an average of ten hours per episode watching scenes and making notes for music synchronisation. Hazlehurst then recorded the music using an orchestra consisting of a guitar, harmonica, two violins, a viola, cello, accordion, horn, bass, flute, and percussion. The distinctive harmonica was played by Harry Pitch, who had featured in the 1970 one-hit-wonder Groovin With Mr Bloe. The harmonica part is included in this arrangement but it is cued in the Flute 1 part if one is not available.

My completion of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) brings to life the tantalizing fragments he left for the third and fourth movements. The third movement follows closely Schubert's surviving short score, where his intricate melodic ideas are expanded with a full orchestration that honors his harmonic language. This movement, true to Schubert’s symphonic style, carries a lively yet graceful energy, interspersed with contrasting themes that reflect both joy and contemplation.The fourth movement begins with a nod to Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, seamlessly transitioning from the grandeur of the third movement. Drawing from the overture’s distinctive opening, I introduce a bold and majestic theme that acts as a foundation for the final movement. From here, the symphony unfolds into a dramatic and richly textured conclusion. My aim in this movement was to capture Schubert’s gift for lyrical, expansive melody while incorporating the dynamic tension and rhythmic drive that characterizes his symphonic writing.Throughout the fourth movement, I intertwine moments of serene beauty with powerful orchestral climaxes, echoing the drama of the symphony’s first movement. The use of Schubert’s melodic genius is central to this completion, with soaring strings and resonant winds building to a thrilling finale. The symphony concludes with a recapitulation of the opening theme from the first movement, bringing a sense of unity and closure to the entire work.The entire symphony, now lasting 50 minutes, forms a cohesive continuation of Schubert's original vision. This completion fills the second half of the concert program, offering a balanced and dramatic conclusion to the work Schubert began but never had the chance to finish.

A dissonant deceptive cadences leads to the final section, a coda that restates the main fast theme which is now accelerated, developed, and supported by the full ensemble. DIVINUM MYSTERIUM is a chant tune dating to the 12th century which is associated with the hymn, Of the Father's Love Begotten, based on the Latin hymn, Corde natus ex parentis, written by Prudentius in the late 4th / early 5th century. This is thus one of the very oldest texts and tunes still sung in our churches today. The shape and flow of this arrangement, which includes quotations from CANTIQUE de NOEL (O Holy Night) – Adolphe Adam (1844), was strongly influenced by what one writer described as the strong wave shapes of the tune. I’ve attempted to make these waves a significant feature of the piece, featured in both the constant crescendo/decrescendos and the interweaving of the two tunes. And, just as ocean waves don’t arrive in steady rhythms, these musical waves are variable – sometimes closely spaced, sometimes not, and sometimes overlapping. The unique character of each of the three major sections is implied in their headings: (1) with mystery and wonder, (2) Joyfully – a child is born, and (3) contemplative – God is with us. The opening section portrays the mystery of the trinity (the hymn text was written as an apology for the Nicene Creed) mixed with the wonder of the Creator God lying in a manger. Since the tune is derived from medieval chant, I wanted this section to reflect the loose metrical nature of that genre, so the melodic phrasing should predominate over any sense of meter up to letter C. The initial tonal and metrical ambiguity and the fractured melodic lines gradually meld into conventional tonality and clear statements of the two main themes. Don’t let the poco rit. just before C be too poco. Build a definite sense of tension in anticipation of the Presto section. The Presto section presents the first complete statement of the main theme. I felt a strong, rhythmic treatment should follow the ambiguity of the opening to reflect the joy of the Messiah’s incarnation realized. However, the gravity of the text demands avoidance of frivolity and banality. Thus, I used a combination of the long, flowing lines with a syncopated pulse and echoing rhythms to produce what I hope is a fresh but still reverent treatment of this ancient hymn – one that produces a kaleidoscope of tonal color. Arriving at the third section at letter F, the asymmetrical pulse gradually shifts into a straight 3 pattern. The slower tempo and return of the secondary theme call us to reflect on the import of God now with us. The marking of Let off the gas and coast to the end is a word picture of how the tempo should draw to a close, as would an expert helmsman allow the ship’s momentum to stop just as it taps the dock. Bramshill was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the police staff college and was premiered by the British Police Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In 2011 it undertook some quite serious revision. Bramshill House was until recently the home of the Police Staff College. In 1953 the Home Office purchased Bramshill from Lord Brocket. There is evidence that the site has been inhabited since the time of Domesday and the Norman Conquest. The present building was constructed principally by Edward Zouche, 11th Baron Zouche of Harringworth, between c. 1605-1625. The music is written in large ternary form as a concert rondo. There are features within which depict and draw together various facets of the early history of Bramshill House as a Jacobean structure with that of its current role as the police staff college. After a declamatory eighteen bar opening in the key of C minor the piece leads towards the principal theme - it is introduced by the horn, quietly accompanied by chords from the clarinets dipping in and out of the chalumeau register - a haunting, ethereal theme that depicts the mystery of the ancient building and its numerous reported wraiths. The theme develops and is pronounced giacoso in the strings with light accompaniment in the higher woodwinds. A restatement of the main theme is followed by a section, fugato; this depicts a police officer on the beat in the early hours of a cold, wet, winter’s night. This theme transmutes into a quasi-stately dance such as may have been performed in Bramshill’s great withdrawing room or the long gallery in the 1600’s. A series of 6/3 chords then develop into what sounds akin to a police siren; the section culminates in a wash of sound with police theme, stately dance and siren sounding simultaneously. In the final section, the principal theme is reiterated in various guises and sub-themes are further explored.

The music, along with narration from selected Old and New Testament scriptures, delivers a message of hope amid the turmoil and chaos of current times.It's written for smaller concert bands hungry for challenging music. Ample cues and doubling allow for flexible instrumentation while mixed meters, varying tempos and textures, and interesting solo lines provide opportunities for strong players to shine. CONJUNCTION is also available with strings for orchestra.PROGRAM NOTES:2020 is widely characterized for its maladies: murders, burning cities, riots, a pandemic, economic shocks, and political turmoil. For some of us, it also held personal tragedy such as my brother’s passing from COVID. But, 2020 also brought a sign of hope, namely the celestial phenomenon known as the Great Conjunction of 2020. For earth-bound observers, this was the closest approach of Jupiter and Saturn in almost 400 years as they appeared to almost touch in the early evening sky to produce the most brilliant evening star of our lifetimes. The occurrence of the event in November-December neatly coincided with the Advent season, peaking just before Christmas Day. One could hardly fail to note the parallels with the Christmas star of Matthew’s gospel which gave the conjunction its alternate name, the Christmas Star of 2020. Thus, this star spoke, to those with ears to hear, the same message the prophet Isaiah wrote about the coming Messiah, The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. This star thus served to remind us that the LORD has not rejected us; He will show His favor again; His love has not vanished; His promises have not failed; He has not forgotten to be merciful or compassionate; and we are called to remember His mighty deeds (Psalm 77). CONJUNCTION: The Christmas Star of 2020 is inspired by these particulars.For the music, I looked to Gustav Holst’s The Planets for themes that would portray Jupiter and Saturn’s pas de deux. I selected several motives from the corresponding movements mixed and matched in sometimes easily recognized quotations and other times in heavily camouflaged derivations. An exuberant polyphonic passage recaps themes from both Jupiter and Saturn when the music resolves from uncertainty into hopefulness. While Holst’s motives provide CONJUNCTION’s foundation I also used Handel’s Messiah for transitory and climactic material. You will hear his The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light in transitions and a short trombone solo. And a re-harmonization of the opening line from For unto us a child is born brings the music to a joyous climax.Although the music stands firmly on its own, I elected to incorporate some narrative to make the musical sentiment explicit. In a commentary on 2020’s grim events, I took adaptations of Habakkuk 1:2-4 and 2 Tim 3:1-4 and set them over Saturn’s plodding and ominous harmonies. Contrasting replies shimmer with hope as the narration melds Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:78-79 over another Saturn motive set against pitch sets from Jupiter’s main hymn theme. She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min.
