This anthem should not be confused with the National Anthem of the People’s Republic of China, known as March of the Volunteers which is the anthem of mainland China including its special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. The Taiwanese anthem is currently banned from performance on mainland China and strongly discouraged from being performed in Hong Kong and Macau. Ironically, the national anthem of ROC Taiwan was first used as the anthem for the whole of China when the country was controlled by the Kuomintang. However, in 1949 the Kuomintang government was ousted and relocated to the island of Taiwan to continue government using the same symbols of state that they employed in mainland China. The anthem is informally known as San Min Chu I or San Min Zhu Yi (“Three Principles of the Peopleâ€). As well as the full score (19 staves), the publication includes separate parts for flutes (unison), piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons, 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in B flat, 3 trombones, tuba, violin 1, violin 2, violin 3 (same as viola part), viola, cello, double bass, timpani and percussion (3 players). Each verse and chorus is slightly different, like a series of variations.This arrangement was originally created for the Kansas City Symphony's Symphony in the Flint Hills event in 2022, an annual outdoor concert which traditionally ends with a crowd singing along to this, the state song of Kansas. The key is a friendly E flat, and the text is provided on the second page of the score. There are parts for:the sing-along vocal part 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons optional piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, contrabassoon 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in C, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba Timpani, 2 percussionists (glockenspiel, triangle, suspended cymbal), harp violin I, violin II, viola, cello, double bassI mean, it's a good tune! The ground breaking Netflix epic TV biopic series was indeed a huge sea change in home streaming content output, bringing together some of Britain's biggest names in theatre, film and TV to portray the history of Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years as the UK monarch. Controversial at times, it had many critics but it was hugely popular with no less than 4 actresses taking on her portrayal.The respect, sensitivity and gravitas we would expect for a histirical drama production like this was self evident from the opening credits and the accompanying music. The theme that Balfe, Gregson Williams and Zimmer created perfectly framed and set up each episode beautifully. A little known fact is that it is based on a song written 400 years before it by Henry Purcell in his 'semi-opera' KING ARTHUR. On a stormy night in early 1939 Ary Barroso looked at a watercolor painting of a rainy landscape in his Rio de Janiero home and decided to stay home an write a song--in fact, he wrote two songs. The first, inspired by the painting, was Aquarela do Brasil ('Watercolor of Brazil'). He also wrote Três lágrimas ('Three Teardrops') that same night, before the rain ended. Aquarela do Brasil gained international fame after it was included in Walt Disney's 1942 cartoon Saludos Amigos, and became the first Brazilian song to be played over a million times on American radio in an English version by songwriter Bob Russell. The song's celebration of Brazil's great qualities marked the creation of a new patriotic genre within samba, known as samba-exaltação (exaltation samba). This rhythmically vibrant arrangement presents the song in all its joyous exhilaration. The Great Escape (1963) is one of the great American epic war adventure films starring some of the greatest actors of the age like Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, David McCallum, Gordon Jackson, among many others. The soundtrack was composed by Elmer Bernstein who had enjoyed great acclaim for his music for the 1960 epic The Magnificent 7 (also starrring Steve McQueen). The Great Escape March theme is regarded as one of the best loved war film themes harnessing both a British and an American patriotic flavour in its themes. Its bitter sweet jauntiness successfully catches the mood of the film, the optimism and indominatable spirit of the prisoners always hell bent on trying to escape, and the German march theme also makes a brief appearance to reflect all the voices in the narrative of the story. Other film composers have used a similar approach using a jaunty march theme like Bernstein does - notably The bridge over the river Kwai and A bridge too far - while other composers have tried (arguably) less successfully to encapsulate appropriate pathos alongside that optimism in the 'optimistic' themes.This arrangement is a great bite sized orchestral excerpt appropriate for any concert of film music, or military war/historic themes. Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish.
