Published by Caleb Liu (A0.955621). Main Titles of America was composed during shelter-in-place in July 2020. The piece was premiered in Winter of 2020 and was selected as a finalist in the 2021 National Young Composers Challenge. The composition was largely inspired by film music. In a film score, there is often a piece called Main Titles that plays during the opening scenes of the film. Typically, this piece encaptures all the major musical motifs present in the score of the movie. As the name suggests, Main Titles of America portrays the major themes of America in musical form. The three themes the piece highlights are opportunity, freedom, and love.The main musical motif appears early in the piece and is supported with eight notes and triplets from the harp and violas. The overall feel is adventurous and hopeful with energy building. The main motif is prominent throughout the piece, and almost every instrument plays the motif at some point. Each instrument represents a unique person who has the opportunity to flourish in America. The second motif represents freedom, and it is primarily played by the woodwinds. In particular, the flutes with their light, feathery sound help to express this idea. This motif is more playful and adds a touch of cheerfulness and lightness to the piece. It reflects the happiness of being free. The main motif and the second motif are intertwined just like opportunity and freedom. The third motif represents love and is prominent in the second half of the piece. The same eighth notes and triplets provide seamless energy and flow. While still maintaining a dream-like feel, this motif is meant to sound more grandiose and emotional. The sweeping themes and romantic harmonies are intended to portray the feeling of an ideal relationship. The piece ends with a triumphant brass chorale (the same motif from the beginning) followed by a tutti chord. It’s the musical representation of look how far we’ve come! The piece highlights the infamous American Dream - that anyone in America has the opportunity to pursue their dreams, find love, and create their own destiny.

This orchestral arrangement sticks closely to the original version with a few alterations and additions in orchestration and arrangement to suit the playing ability of Chetham's Philharmonic Orchestra (the orchestra of the Middle School at Chetham's School of Music).It features a more standard orchestral line up (without the additional Hollywood style brass forces that appear to be in the original) as well as extra parts for Alto sax, Tenor sax, Baritone sax and Harp. The woodwind play a larger part in this version to add more colour and cover some of the original choral part that appear in the original. Timpani has been reduced to be able to be played by just one player on just 3 timpani. The ending has been altered so that if finishes on a shock chord instead of the original's long held, dying away chord.

The original version of this music was written for piano in 3 hands (teacher and student). I have orchestrated this for a large symphony orchestra. Equally important is participation of a child of 4-5 years old as a soloist, who will be playing on the piano the main theme of Tati-Tati at the beginning and at the end.It all started as a musical joke from Borodin in a circle of his friends-composers: Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui and Lyadov. The joke turned into collective work which resulted into 24 variations with the finale paraphrasing Tati-Tati. I usually tell this story to the audience before performing. 24 Variations with Finale is an composition that is oriented for family and children symphonic concerts, when the educational part is of great importance for the young listeners to understand classical music, the sound and characteristics of individual musical instruments and groups of the orchestra, what development principles are used by each composer, etc. F. Liszt gave the best assessment to this composition. He pointed out to how the composer’s skills of the above named composers cold transform such insignificant musical theme-joke Tati-Tati into a brilliant and vibrant composition!This is the first part of composition with a full name: Borodin, Cui, Lyadov, Rimsky-Korsakov - PARAPHRASES on an Unchanged Theme Tati-Tati, 24 Variations with Finale and 9 Musical Pieces: Tarantella, Galop, Fugetta B-A-C-H, Waltz, Cortege, Lullaby, Marche Funebre, Requiem, Carillon, orchestrated by Arkady Leytush

The Finlandia hymn (Finnish: Finlandia-hymni) refers to a serene hymn-like section of the patriotic symphonic poem Finlandia, written in 1899 and 1900 by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was later re-worked by the composer into a stand-alone piece. With words written in 1940 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, it is one of the most important national songs of Finland. Although not the official national anthem of Finland, it has been continuously proposed as such. Other major uses of the tune include several Christian hymns and other national songs including Be Still My Soul. This is an arrangement for both Orchestra and/or the Concert Band – It would work for either ensemble or combinations of both… There are parts for Horns in F and Eb. There is an optional Piano part. There is a descant for Piccolo, Flute, Clarinet, and Trumpet in the last verse and an optional Amen at the end of the arrangement… Grade = 3 Duration = 3:25 mins. Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights. On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia. A finalist in the Salford University International Composers' Competition 2014, 'The Smoke that Thunders' tells the story of David Livingstone's journey to discover Victoria Falls. The piece starts out in optimistic fashion, with a Scottish folk song by Rabbie Burns, which Livingstone reportedly used to hum on his travels. The next section describes his battles with local African tribes, who were suspicious of his motives. After surviving these assaults, a more reflective section ensues, which describes the doubts Livingstone had about continuing his mission. This is epitomized by the hymn 'Lord, Send Me Anywhere', which Livingstone himself wrote. The final section describes his journey along the Zambezi River, the triumphant sounds eliciting his elation at discovering the magnificent Victoria Falls, or as it is known by locals, 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (The smoke that thunders). *Please note audio file is of the brass band version.

DIVINUM MYSTERIUM is a chant tune dating to the 12th century which is associated with the hymn, Of the Father's Love Begotten, based on the Latin hymn, Corde natus ex parentis, written by Prudentius in the late 4th / early 5th century. This is thus one of the very oldest texts and tunes still sung in our churches today. The shape and flow of this arrangement, which includes quotations from CANTIQUE de NOEL (O Holy Night) – Adolphe Adam (1844), was strongly influenced by what one writer described as the strong wave shapes of the tune. I’ve attempted to make these waves a significant feature of the piece, featured in both the constant crescendo/decrescendos and the interweaving of the two tunes. And, just as ocean waves don’t arrive in steady rhythms, these musical waves are variable – sometimes closely spaced, sometimes not, and sometimes overlapping. The unique character of each of the three major sections is implied in their headings: (1) with mystery and wonder, (2) Joyfully – a child is born, and (3) contemplative – God is with us. The opening section portrays the mystery of the trinity (the hymn text was written as an apology for the Nicene Creed) mixed with the wonder of the Creator God lying in a manger. Since the tune is derived from medieval chant, I wanted this section to reflect the loose metrical nature of that genre, so the melodic phrasing should predominate over any sense of meter up to letter C. The initial tonal and metrical ambiguity and the fractured melodic lines gradually meld into conventional tonality and clear statements of the two main themes. Don’t let the poco rit. just before C be too poco. Build a definite sense of tension in anticipation of the Presto section. The Presto section presents the first complete statement of the main theme. I felt a strong, rhythmic treatment should follow the ambiguity of the opening to reflect the joy of the Messiah’s incarnation realized. However, the gravity of the text demands avoidance of frivolity and banality. Thus, I used a combination of the long, flowing lines with a syncopated pulse and echoing rhythms to produce what I hope is a fresh but still reverent treatment of this ancient hymn – one that produces a kaleidoscope of tonal color. Arriving at the third section at letter F, the asymmetrical pulse gradually shifts into a straight 3 pattern. The slower tempo and return of the secondary theme call us to reflect on the import of God now with us. The marking of Let off the gas and coast to the end is a word picture of how the tempo should draw to a close, as would an expert helmsman allow the ship’s momentum to stop just as it taps the dock. One parting moment is provided to savor the woodwinds closing phrase from CANTIQUE de NOEL. Robert Myers S.D.G. The poem is timed somewhat to the music, however, each reader will offer their own interpretation and cadence to fit within the overall fabric of the music. The score is particularly suited for professional orchestras especially since it calls for two harpists and a full compliment of strings, winds, and brass, and a variety of interesting percussion. Everything about the score is intended to underscore the poem reader, so dynamics are generally soft and the score will work and sound great even with orchestras lacking some of the instrumentation.Portions of all proceeds from sales of this score will be donated to charities supporting the care of Dogs, Cats, and other animals and it is the composer's/poet's wish that live performances will make the most of the symphonic hall setting to encourage others to donate generously to organizations that promote animal well-being.

From the 2006 Ron Howard film adaptation of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, this track is taken from the soundtrack which underscores the final late night walk by Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks) through the streets of Paris to (possibly and hopefully) conclude his long and testing quest to seek the Holy Grail. No spoilers however. If you've not seen it, then add it to your playlist!The film's soundtrack evokes great emotion throughout and whatever criticisms there may have been over the years about the book, the story, the film etc.. this is definitely one of Hans Zimmer's finest emotional and thought provoking soundtrack scores, drawing from a huge range of musical influences, from the big symphonic oceanic sounscapes to the intimate vocal solo and choral plainchant that are peppered throughout the score. It is an example of how a soundtrack can really make a massive difference to what some might describe glibly as a popcorn movie.Very much like Time in Inception Zimmer takes a relatively simple harmonic and melodic trope and adds layers of melodic counter melody and rhythmic building to create an awe inspiring and (let's face it BIG!) climax, supporting the narrative of the film and story but also creating music that can be taken away from the cinematic experience and enjoyed for its own sake.This orchestration emulkates as closely as possible the soundtrack. Some licence has been taken with the addition of 2 Trumpets which build the climax with the upper strings. SATB choir is also scored as per the original soundtrack but optional as it is mostly covered by orchestral instruments and is also a very brief appearance but - at least for the sopranos - extremely challenging for anyone apart from a professional specialist choral ensemble. The synth section of the keyboard part in the opening pages can also be optional, adding some background sounds that Zimmer is so renowned for (this may be beyond the budget of some performing groups we appeciate). These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.The particular study Orchestraining Nr. 01 focuses on the subject of simultaneous attacks, presenting a series of staccato chords in different parts of the bar. This piece has traditionally been nicknamed The Black Mass and was written for piano. Scriabin himself accepted this nickname for the piece and earlier on wrote a piece that would be nicknamed The White Mass. The Black mass was completed in 1913, a mere 2 years before his untimely death. The piece is built upon his ‘mystic chord, a hexachord built on fourths. Scriabin described this chord of embodying the divine and having a smoky tonal color, stemming from his own perception of sound as color. This piece moves from haunting sounds in its first motif to a chilling climax, returning to a mysterious murmur, and moves through multiple tempos to drag the listener along its march through its gothic vision, until finally returning to its first motif and leaving the listener haunted by the dark, colorful visions it invokes. To date of publication of this arrangement, I have yet to find an arrangement of The Black Mass for orchestra, band, nor symphony. The piece has many layers within it and includes complex polyrhythms typical of his music. The dark uncurrent, along with the form and choice of lack of direct key signature pose a unique challenge in the arrangement of this piece. I have deigned to maintain the feel of the original piano version, including his choice of time signatures and rhythmic choices while bringing it to life through the sounds of a modified symphony orchestra. This arrangement relies on the timbres of the instrument families to portray the emotional colors of the piece and particularly highlights the woodwind section of the symphony orchestra, along with the angelic sounds of the harp. Percussion is added through timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, and multi-percussion to heighten the emotional experience of the arrangement.

Each of the three movements deals with symbols, specifically those that have autobiographical significance to the composer. The first movement, Klee on Loan, pays homage to the famous abstract expressionist painter. The gestures are traditional and all easily identifiable, from the sweeping Mahleresque beginning to the Bartok meets The Rolling Stones motifs found at mid movement. These are the composer's attempts to represent Klee's crosses and arrows through some familiar and abstract sound. Klee's genius, I believe, is found in his ability to make very generic symbols very abstract. The second movement, Roadside Memorial, is a musical journey that goes the route of a dangerous and ominous highway replete with roadside crosses and flowers. Present are the sounds of radio static and the motorist's attempts to find an interesting station in the midst of a punishing blizzard, all the while praying to make the trek safely home. Ikonoklastic is the third and least serious movement of the three, sporting a playful and somewhat schizophrenic waltz. There are childlike melodies set against more serious romantic style gestures. The blending of the serious with the less serious at times combines to create contrapuntal moments. The final movement is the most sublime of the four, and it is solely based upon a loping, adieu-like gesture. The line is continually recycling itself, and the piano takes the role of psychopomp as it escorts the movement to its out of body conclusion.

An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council.
