Striadica: A Symphonic PassageThe every-day, reshaped by contingencies. The time-bound path twists through certainty, bewilderment, and fragile reconstruction. Upon release, recognition arrives.Duration: 8 - 9 mins.I was specifically asked to write a work where everyone had something to play. As is my usual style, I tend to allow the second players and less-prominent instruments a chance to shine, and in general shake up the usual orchestral hierarchy. (The second violins, for example, even get their own solo passage!)The wind parts are much more individualized, where the first part may have a completely different line than the second.A colleague who is a trombone player challenged me to write parts that sing for his instrument; hence the word dolce occurs in the low brass parts. My completion of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) brings to life the tantalizing fragments he left for the third and fourth movements. The third movement follows closely Schubert's surviving short score, where his intricate melodic ideas are expanded with a full orchestration that honors his harmonic language. This movement, true to Schubert’s symphonic style, carries a lively yet graceful energy, interspersed with contrasting themes that reflect both joy and contemplation.The fourth movement begins with a nod to Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, seamlessly transitioning from the grandeur of the third movement. Drawing from the overture’s distinctive opening, I introduce a bold and majestic theme that acts as a foundation for the final movement. From here, the symphony unfolds into a dramatic and richly textured conclusion. My aim in this movement was to capture Schubert’s gift for lyrical, expansive melody while incorporating the dynamic tension and rhythmic drive that characterizes his symphonic writing.Throughout the fourth movement, I intertwine moments of serene beauty with powerful orchestral climaxes, echoing the drama of the symphony’s first movement. The use of Schubert’s melodic genius is central to this completion, with soaring strings and resonant winds building to a thrilling finale. The symphony concludes with a recapitulation of the opening theme from the first movement, bringing a sense of unity and closure to the entire work.The entire symphony, now lasting 50 minutes, forms a cohesive continuation of Schubert's original vision. This completion fills the second half of the concert program, offering a balanced and dramatic conclusion to the work Schubert began but never had the chance to finish.

Kevin Riley #457301. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.850629). The Twelfth of Never is a popular song written in 1956 and first recorded by Johnny Mathis the following year. The title is a popular expression, which is used as the date of a future occurrence that will never come to pass. In the case of the song, the 12th of Never is given as the date on which the singer will stop loving his beloved, thus indicating that he will always love her. Mathis initially disliked the song, which was released as the flip side to his number 1 hit single Chances Are. It was written by Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis Webster, the tune (except for the bridge) being adapted from The Riddle Song (also known as I Gave My Love a Cherry), an old English folk song. Mathis's original version reached number 9 on what is now called the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA in 1957. A version by Cliff Richard was released in 1964 and reached number 8 in the UK. Donny Osmond's version, produced by Mike Curb and Don Costa, was his second number 1 single in the UK, spending a single week at the top of the UK Singles Chart in March 1973. In the U.S. it peaked at number 8.
