This piece is written for players 5th-8th grade. All string parts are in 1st position. Vn.1 and Viola use all four strings. Vn. 2, Cello and Bass use the A, D, and G strings. The Piano part is optional and may be used only to assist rehearsals. The themes are written in a Call and Response style between the upper and lower strings. All five parts get to contribute to the melody so the players feel their part is meaningful. I've Got The D String Blues is composed by Harry Salotti. Sony Classical//BMG label director Gilbert Hetherwick explains; Dvorak and Copland painted symphonic landscapes using melodies inspired by the Americana tradition, and Mark O'Connor actually comes from that tradition itself. He's lived it every day of his life. And you hear it in every note of his Americana Symphony. For the majority of his solo career, O'Connor has dedicated himself to composing for orchestra: he has written six full-length concertos, several orchestral suites and string orchestra compositions, and most recently his first Symphony.David Wallace, Juilliard School faculty member and Senior Teaching Artist with the New York Philharmonic, comments on the overall characteristics of O'Connor's music: The Americana Symphony combines historical narrative with classical and folk variation principles. It’s the story of a hypochondriac, studio mogul who is willing to marry off his daughter to his celebrity doctor’s son to save on expenses. From the other side, his ambitious, hypocritical wife is trying to swindle his fortune. Only his long-time secretary and partner can save him and unite his daughter with the young man who she actually loves. Set in 1930’s Los Angeles, Hollywood with early jazz elements, quasi musical numbers that will delight and tickle your audiences today. A small cast opera of about 8 singers (2 tenors, soprano, mezzo, coloratura, 2 baritones, and bass baritone) with no chorus and relatively small sized orchestra, this piece is perfect for any university or small opera house, and it’s libretto is originally in English. Kabuki pieces takes influence and inspiration from Japanese Kabuki theatre productions. In this work, the main aspects of Kabuki theatre are explored through the 'deconstructed' Orchestra. Kabuki theatre employs the principles of jo-ha-kyu which helps sets the pace for a dramatic play. Jo-ha-kyustates that a play should start slow, get quicker and end fast. Kabuki employs this technique over a series of 5 acts, hence this composition uses 5 movements and the pace of the work as a whole speeds up as it moves through.1. Introduction - Like with all good pieces of theatre, the first act sets the scene and establishes characters. In this compositon, the scene is set by the Cello accompanied by a selection of percussion (a characteristic trait of Kabuki theatre).2. Battle #1 - In Kabuki theatre there are always a number of battles, these usually occur during the 2nd and 4th acts. This composition similarly mimics the chaos of a battle and features the Woodwind section.3. Tragedy - During the 3rd act, a Tragedy or emotional event usually occurs, thus this composition hopes to mirror that with an emotional outpouring of melodic ideas introducing the Brass.4. Battle #2 - In the 2nd battle of this work, the feature is placed more on the Xylophone who takes a solo role and sets out a frantic tune which provides the basis for a Fugue of sorts picked up by the Strings.5. Conclusion - The conclusion to most Kabuki plays are satisfying and short, this is mirrored by the very brief conclusion to this work.
