When Andrea Bates, executive director of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, first told me that the Brockton Symphony had commissioned me to write a new work to be premiered in 2003-2004, I immediately thought that since its music director, Jonathan Cohler, is a marvelous clarinetist I would be most attracted to the idea of writing a clarinet concerto for the occasion. Both Andrea and Jonathan were very receptive and enthusiastic about my idea. Andrea also told me that the commissioned work should somehow bring to attention the diverse cultures of the recent immigrants that have settled in the city of Brockton. So in the spring of 2003 I came down to Brockton for a meeting to which Andrea had invited representative members of these new communities. Three showed up: Maria Evora-Rosa, Rick Marrero and Fred Fontaine. Andrea had asked them to bring recordings of the music from their countries for me to listen to. There were CDs of very exciting and fun music from Cape Verde, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. After spending months listening to the music from these countries, all of them islands in the Atlantic or the Caribbean, I slowly began to get a sense of the beauty and the magic of the musical style and language of each place, each individual island. The end result is a three-movement work for clarinet and orchestra. Unlike the traditional Concerto form which is Fast-Slow-Fast, this work begins with something slow. A fast number follows as a second movement; and then, after a short, slow interlude, another fast number appears. The first movement is my adaptation of the morna of Cape Verde – slow, melancholy and sad. The diva of the morna is Cesaria Evora. Her singing brings to mind a fusion between the African blues and the Portuguese fado. The second movement is my take on the merengue as performed by the inimitable Xavier Cugat. It is dance music through and through!!! The third movement is also a dance number: the ever-popular music from Haiti, the reggae. And in order to give some contrast between the two dance numbers, I added a slow chorale for clarinet and strings that serves as a prelude before the dancing begins in the final movement. I envision the chorale as a little church music before the people go out and dance the night away. Throughout the entire work, the solo clarinet is the principal voice … singing, dancing, and cavorting!!! Gotta dance!!! Have fun and enjoy the music!!! I surely did as I was working on it ….

Kandelab seeks to bring awareness to Haitian Folk and Vodou music. Vilson's book, Kandelab: 101 Notated Haitian Folk and Vodou Songs are transcriptions of this music that has otherwise been handed down through an aural tradition. Vilson's descriptions of the tales that go with these melodies were a great help in setting the tone of this work. Many thanks to Vilson and Kandelab for introducing me to these wonderful melodies and rich cultural heritage. Minis Azaka is known as the great Minister of Agriculture in Haitian Vodou. Iwa peasants bring grievances to him and also reach out to him for prosperity.An invitation is made to a gathering along the countryside and this piece introduces a dignified Minis Azaka entering a hall adorned for his arrival. His followers trail behind him. He sits to listen to their gripes, but also joins them in dance as he isalso a well known dancer. He exits with the same reverence he entered, then disappears into the fields with his entourage. This piece expresses a veil of mystery and darkness setting the tone of great honor and respect. The Nago drum reference is included with the parts. The pattern should be played in reference to the slash marking in the score. The reference is meant as a guide and liberty may be taken with the pattern.

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles.  The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners.  Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. It was written and sung by John Lennon (though credited to Lennon–McCartney) and released on the album Help! in August 1965.Lennon said of the song, That's me in my Dylan period again. I am like a chameleon, influenced by whatever is going on. If Elvis can do it, I can do it. If the Everly Brothers can do it, me and Paul can. Same with Dylan. The song is an early example of John self-reflecting in his writing, which had begun with songs such as I'm a Loser in the summer of 1964. Lennon wrote the song at home, wanting another song for the film Help!. The song is just basically John doing Dylan, Paul McCartney confirmed.The song is similar to a folkish strophic form and uses a Dylanesque acoustic guitar figure in compound duple time, chiefly acoustic accompaniment, no backing voices and light percussion from brushed snare, tambourine and maraca. As many of you know, Rhapsody in Blue is one of George Gershwin's most famous and iconic pieces of music history, if not, of all time! But in case you guys don't know, there are actually 3 different versions of the same piece Gershwin wrote.These 3 versions include: The original Jazz Band 1924 version, 1927 version, and the most iconic well-known full symphony orchestra 1942 version that everyone plays nowadays. Not only that, but in the 1942 version, the extended part of the Shuffle Theme, as well as the extended Piano Cadenzas have been cut for duration time.So, in honor of Gershwin's Legacy, I've put together a special arrangement written for a full orchestra, and it even includes tons of heavy influences taken mostly from the 1924 version, even taking influences from different live performances that are inspired.These changes include the following:Adding back in the extended shuffle theme and Piano CadenzasAdded a Harp Part to make the arrangement a little Phil Spitalny Hour Of Charm-esque flavor to it.Brought back in the Bari Sax and Orchestral Piano parts, even though they sort of look different from the original score.Swapped a few solo/soli sections here and there while still keeping some of the 1924/42 elements (for instance the 2 Violin Soli, or Low Instruments Soli) in tact.You obviously get the idea.A huge thanks to one of my newest and closest friends who also have arranging experiences Darren Rodney for helping me put this incredible arrangement together!

When I discovered this composition of Saint-Saens written for 2 pianos, I was struck by his amazing penetration into the Polish spirit and ability to express it in bright and rich colors. On the other hand however, I could not get rid of the feeling of some heaviness and excessive density of the sound of the piano duet. In addition, the character of this music and its development are permeated with symphonic techniques inherent in orchestral compositions. These circumstances pushed me to undertake the orchestration of this work, which on the symphonic stage would have received great fame and legitimate public recognition.

His scherzo, modestly titled “Humoresque,†​​is a brilliant virtuoso piece in which, thanks to symphonic development, I heard a potential orchestra. Working on the orchestral transcription of this work was an absolute pleasure for me, since the soloists and groups of the future orchestra reproduced exclusively in accordance with their nature, character and mobility. In other words, to put it in theatrical language, the casting turned out to be very successful. In a regular score, the overall sound takes on a different scale and can delight listeners and musicians with excellent virtuosic compositions, updating the standard repertoire.

The title of this work is a metaphor and it shouldn't be taken literally as a concerto for any specific instrument, although brass and metal percussion instruments are prominent. Ever since I can remember, Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll have had a strong influence in me musically. In like manner Concierto de Metal para un Recuerdo utilizes a popular and common 4-part street corner harmonic progression as it's main recourse. The sonic material or theme that evolves from that is transformed and modified into various melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and/or timbre motifs. A surprise feel good rock passage emerges revealing another cultural phenomena that permeates in our socio-musical environment. This work questions the possibility of overcoming abstruse musical concepts in contemporary concert music. But at the same time, it is revolutionary in the sense that it dares to contradict and confront Eurocentric musical concepts with an accessible and unpretentious street gutted idiom.
