The single became the band's second No. 1 hit in the Billboard Hot 100, and it is one of the few chart-toppers in history to hit No. 1 on more than one occasion during a one-month period, as it did between November and December 1975. It topped the American pop chart for one week, and then was replaced by another disco song, Fly, Robin, Fly by Silver Convention. That's the Way (I Like It) returned to No. 1 for one more week after Fly, Robin, Fly completed three weeks at the top. That's the Way (I Like It) also spent one week at No. 1 in the soul singles chart. The song is in natural minor. The song was also an international chart hit, reaching No. 1 in Canada[4] and the Netherlands and charting in Australia (No. 5), Belgium (No. 2), Germany (No. 20), Ireland (No. 17), New Zealand (No. 12), Norway (No. 5) and the United Kingdom (No. 4). For release as a single and radio airplay, the song was toned down from the original recording, which would have jeopardized it receiving getting radio airplay at the time. However the sexual overtones may have improved the record's reception at discos, increasing its overall popularity in the charts.

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. Time of performance is 4:50. It is fairly easy to play, and was selected by two junior all-region orchestras in Texas. However, to obtain the best results, a mature orchestra is recommended in order to pull off the big climax near the end.

Mark R Lewis #960352. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1375804). In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is a medley of two Christmas carols, In the Bleak Midwinter and Twas in the Moon of Wintertime. The first carol was originally written as a poem by Christina Rossetti and published in 1872. It has been set to music several times, but the tune most associated with the text, Cranham, was composed in 1906 by Gustav Holst. The second carol is a French-Canadian Christmas carol first written by a Jesuit missionary in 1642. This tune is also called the Huron Carol.This medley is written for orchestra with 3-5 octave bell choir and goes back and forth between the two carols several times. Every time the carol changes there is a key change, sometimes between related major and minor keys and sometimes between two closely related keys. The melody is carried by the low, middle, and high ranges of the bells at some point in the piece and the accompanying voices are quite active throughout most of arrangement. Within the orchestra parts, the melody switches between woodwinds, brass, and strings several times, exploring several different sound colors throughout the piece.In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is between the level 3 and level 4 range of difficulty. There are definitely passages that will require work and the multiple key changes require multiple handbell changes, but bell changes are never very abrupt and accidentals only happen in the transition passages. The most difficult part will probably be making sure the melody is always heard even when it is buried below active accompaniment. A few times the bass bells have quick passages that will require sharing of bells or a lot of practice. For orchestra, this piece should be playable by most intermediate players, though some brass parts push the comfortable extremes of the instrument.

It has a beautiful Adagio and a slight Molto Vivace as a Finale in Rondo form. This piece as said was thought of as a solo Piano Sonata, but the moment I heard it for the first time (on 12/18/2022, and yes, it was precisely on that day, because, I made the decision to start orchestrating it on the next day, the 19th) the idea of orchestrating it came to me because at least for me, it could sound like a beautiful symphony, even if it is very brief. I was extremely satisfied with the results, unfortunately with certain limitations of the VST I use (BBCSO pro) certain excerpts sound a little unrealistic, however, I have great esteem with the result. This orchestration/arrangement can be compared almost faithfully with the original, of course with several additions of voices and certain modifications to adapt it to the context of the orchestra, I tried to be as faithful as possible with Haydn's orchestral language, I am a great admirer of his vast work, and as I am also a classical/romantic composer, I learned a lot from him. I hope you enjoy this work as much as I enjoyed composing it!!

Have you ever actively witnessed the sun’s sultry and intense ascension from the cradle of the horizon? That is what this piece, Aubade, or Dawn Song, is about. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

But the main thing, of course, is the theme that unites them. “Devil’s Intrigues” is the second name I could give to these works. During the instrumentation, I came up with the idea of performing these two pieces without interruption, and another reason for their connection was the technical element - the Tam-Tam beat, which stretches from one piece to another and is, as it were, a connecting bridge.

EP!C!!! is an overture-sized orchestral work, originally commissioned by the West Michigan Symphony in 2016. It is intended as a higher energy opener or Act 1 closer. Program notes:Entirely by mistake, EP!C!!! is study in conflict. The piece began with a simple premise: compose a work which teases some of the pervasive clichés of today’s musical landscape (particularly the Hollywood or so-called media music scenes). Those clichés are primarily two gestures: 1) a progression of chords, often called the Chords of Destiny (consisting of i – VI – III – VIII) and 2) an endlessly repeating minor third ostinato.The conflict emerged internally when, after multiple false starts, I would quickly start to hate the piece because it felt like the clichés were being presented whole cloth, without the slightest sense of irony. I became deeply paranoid that the music wasn’t in on its own joke. When I would reverse course, it felt condescending, as though it were declaring from some erudite ivory tower that it was above those gestures. The trouble particularly with the latter is that clichés become so for a reason; something genuinely compelling becomes so ubiquitous that it loses some of the freshness, but that doesn’t erase what initially made it compelling. So the piece needed to somehow make fun of the fact that these gestures are cliché, while not dismissing their intrinsic value. And indeed, to celebrate that value!It took a long time to find my place between those two extremes, and ultimately I think the music that emerged is actually the conflict itself manifest. The two gestures are this constant presence, almost like a seductive temptation, that are initially regarded as distractions, but eventually become the music’s core. It’s as though the music finally decided to just relent and find something to truly love and celebrate within these overwrought ideas, haters be damned.However, for the sake of total clarity of intention, I couldn’t resist some on-the-nose tongue-in-cheek. The little cameo of Haydn’s lulling 94th Symphony 2nd movement tune is my way of saying you think classical music is epic??? Symphony No 22 Galaxymbion is a 7-movement symphonic setting of scenes from my novel The Galaxymbion Odyssey MOVEMENTS 4 – The Sirantiga Disaster TOTAL NUMBER OF BARS = 2670 TOTAL DURATION = 125 minutes General methodology of composition;1. No fixed tonal centre2. Each movement inherits material from its predecessor3. The work is modular. This means that the 1st, 4th and 7th movements can be presented together as the symphony proper if full staging is not possible. The movements that double as concertos can be presented separately in their own right, hence their individual opus numbers.4. The work has developed from a highly individualized harmonic language that establishes its own laws independent from and additional to conventional harmonic practice. The same is true of the work’s unusual tonality. Central to this approach is the use of dodecaphonic principles in both the melodic and harmonic content. The intent here is to incorporate Schoenberg’s theoretical model of tone rows in an inclusive way, so that it is part of the work’s musical language and an additional tool in structuring and developing ideas. As a result the work remains tonal, albeit inhabiting a distinct and exotic aural landscape.There is no rigid adherence to conventional forms or methods of symphonic development, rather the work takes an entirely eccentric and highly individual approach. Whilst this is the ‘spark’ or heart of the work there is still an intention to create music instead of noise. Discords are therefore used as elsewhere in my more conventionally tonal works; as a natural consequence of the work itself instead of a forced snub at tonal music.

Heures Séculaires et Instantanées (Hallowed by Time and Instant Hours), one of his humorous keyboard suites from the 1910s, contains Satie's famous warning to pianists against reading aloud the fanciful texts that adorned his score. Sati warns against reading aloud the texts written on his scores. This is the secret between the performer and the composer. “There are as many words as there are notes!†says the French composer-critic Guy Sacré. Biographer Rollo H. Myers saw Heures as an omen of surrealism (ten years before the fact) and a new phase in the relationship between text and music. “... For the first time, individual verbal witticisms and witticisms are replaced by something like a recitation or monologue, which is an integral part of the work: this is no longer a cursory comment, arbitrarily superimposed and often not related to the music that it accompanies, but a certain narrative, grotesque inspiration, which the music serves as an illustration. In addition to what has been said, I would like to add that being one of the first minimalists in modern music, Sati opens a new page in the combination of musical images and examples of abstract vision and imagination inspired by music with his illustrative texts in this humorous suite. This approach to composition soon led to the emergence of striking examples of the combination of music and animation. This short suite, full of humor and ingenuity, moved me when arranging to also emphasize this feature by choosing the full composition of the orchestra, where in each number of this suite the musicians of the orchestra play only a few notes in turn. On the one hand, this should bring great variety and contrast, on the other hand, a huge orchestra and a 4-minute suite in themselves cause a smile of inconsistency...

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles.  The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners.  Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer:  Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

CONJUNCTION interprets the convergence of Jupiter and Saturn near the end of the year 2020 as a celestial metaphor for the good news of Christ's birth in a replay of the Star of Bethlehem. Hence, its subtitle of The Christmas Star of 2020. The music, along with narration from selected Old and New Testament scriptures, delivers a message of hope amid the turmoil and chaos of current times.It's written for smaller concert bands hungry for challenging music. Ample cues and doubling allow for flexible instrumentation while mixed meters, varying tempos and textures, and interesting solo lines provide opportunities for strong players to shine. CONJUNCTION is also available with strings for orchestra.PROGRAM NOTES:2020 is widely characterized for its maladies: murders, burning cities, riots, a pandemic, economic shocks, and political turmoil. For some of us, it also held personal tragedy such as my brother’s passing from COVID. But, 2020 also brought a sign of hope, namely the celestial phenomenon known as the Great Conjunction of 2020. For earth-bound observers, this was the closest approach of Jupiter and Saturn in almost 400 years as they appeared to almost touch in the early evening sky to produce the most brilliant evening star of our lifetimes. The occurrence of the event in November-December neatly coincided with the Advent season, peaking just before Christmas Day. One could hardly fail to note the parallels with the Christmas star of Matthew’s gospel which gave the conjunction its alternate name, the Christmas Star of 2020. Thus, this star spoke, to those with ears to hear, the same message the prophet Isaiah wrote about the coming Messiah, The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. This star thus served to remind us that the LORD has not rejected us; He will show His favor again; His love has not vanished; His promises have not failed; He has not forgotten to be merciful or compassionate; and we are called to remember His mighty deeds (Psalm 77). CONJUNCTION: The Christmas Star of 2020 is inspired by these particulars.For the music, I looked to Gustav Holst’s The Planets for themes that would portray Jupiter and Saturn’s pas de deux. I selected several motives from the corresponding movements mixed and matched in sometimes easily recognized quotations and other times in heavily camouflaged derivations. An exuberant polyphonic passage recaps themes from both Jupiter and Saturn when the music resolves from uncertainty into hopefulness. While Holst’s motives provide CONJUNCTION’s foundation I also used Handel’s Messiah for transitory and climactic material. You will hear his The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light in transitions and a short trombone solo. And a re-harmonization of the opening line from For unto us a child is born brings the music to a joyous climax.Although the music stands firmly on its own, I elected to incorporate some narrative to make the musical sentiment explicit. In a commentary on 2020’s grim events, I took adaptations of Habakkuk 1:2-4 and 2 Tim 3:1-4 and set them over Saturn’s plodding and ominous harmonies. Contrasting replies shimmer with hope as the narration melds Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:78-79 over another Saturn motive set against pitch sets from Jupiter’s main hymn theme.
