Johann Strauss I (German: Johann Baptist Strauß, Johann Strauss (Vater); also Johann Baptist Strauss, Johann Strauss Sr., the Elder, the Father; 14 March 1804 – 25 September 1849) was an Austrian Romantic composer. He was famous for his waltzes, and he popularized them alongside Joseph Lanner, thereby setting the foundations for his sons to carry on his musical dynasty. He is best known for his composition of the Radetzky March (named after Joseph Radetzky von Radetz).In 1835 he composed one of his most beautiful waltzes – Elisabethen Walzer.Strauss died in Vienna on 25 September 1849 at the age of 45 from scarlet fever contracted from one of his illegitimate children. He was buried at the Döblinger cemetery beside his friend Joseph Lanner. In 1904, both of their remains were transferred to the graves of honour at the Zentralfriedhof. The former Döbling Cemetery is now a Strauss-Lanner Park. Hector Berlioz himself paid tribute to the 'Father of the Viennese Waltz' by commenting that Vienna without Strauss is like Austria without the Danube.

This very short piece opens by depicting the open savanna and the roar of Lion. A fanfare welcomes him, then we hear his confident march and another roar. However, he is plagued by many fleas, who perform a jazz waltz between bites and jumps. At the end, helpless Lion staggers away, cheeky fleas still biting. First performance was by York Guildhall Orchestra under Simon Wright. The children in the audience could be invited to state the moral of this Kenyan saying: A flea can trouble a lion more than the lion can harm a flea. The movement uses flute doubling on referee's whistle, piccolo, 2 oboes (one doubling on swanee whistle), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, untuned percussion, harp and strings. Duration: 2minutes.

Percussion, Harp and Strings. A full score and all parts are included and this is the complete composition as heard in the John Wilson orchestra recording. The original version of this music was written for piano in 3 hands (teacher and student). I have orchestrated this for a large symphony orchestra. Equally important is participation of a child of 4-5 years old as a soloist, who will be playing on the piano the main theme of Tati-Tati at the beginning and at the end.It all started as a musical joke from Borodin in a circle of his friends-composers: Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui and Lyadov. The joke turned into collective work which resulted into 24 variations with the finale paraphrasing Tati-Tati. I usually tell this story to the audience before performing. 24 Variations with Finale is an composition that is oriented for family and children symphonic concerts, when the educational part is of great importance for the young listeners to understand classical music, the sound and characteristics of individual musical instruments and groups of the orchestra, what development principles are used by each composer, etc. F. Liszt gave the best assessment to this composition. He pointed out to how the composer’s skills of the above named composers cold transform such insignificant musical theme-joke Tati-Tati into a brilliant and vibrant composition!This is the first part of composition with a full name: Borodin, Cui, Lyadov, Rimsky-Korsakov - PARAPHRASES on an Unchanged Theme Tati-Tati, 24 Variations with Finale and 9 Musical Pieces: Tarantella, Galop, Fugetta B-A-C-H, Waltz, Cortege, Lullaby, Marche Funebre, Requiem, Carillon, orchestrated by Arkady Leytush

Each of the three movements deals with symbols, specifically those that have autobiographical significance to the composer. The first movement, Klee on Loan, pays homage to the famous abstract expressionist painter. The gestures are traditional and all easily identifiable, from the sweeping Mahleresque beginning to the Bartok meets The Rolling Stones motifs found at mid movement. These are the composer's attempts to represent Klee's crosses and arrows through some familiar and abstract sound. Klee's genius, I believe, is found in his ability to make very generic symbols very abstract. The second movement, Roadside Memorial, is a musical journey that goes the route of a dangerous and ominous highway replete with roadside crosses and flowers. Present are the sounds of radio static and the motorist's attempts to find an interesting station in the midst of a punishing blizzard, all the while praying to make the trek safely home. Ikonoklastic is the third and least serious movement of the three, sporting a playful and somewhat schizophrenic waltz. There are childlike melodies set against more serious romantic style gestures. The blending of the serious with the less serious at times combines to create contrapuntal moments. The final movement is the most sublime of the four, and it is solely based upon a loping, adieu-like gesture. The line is continually recycling itself, and the piano takes the role of psychopomp as it escorts the movement to its out of body conclusion.
