Starting off slow and daunting at first, with shifts and odd dynamics and rhythms as you just allow yourself to fall into this new feeling. Then, the piece takes off. With confusing chords, a ground bass but always a visible motet. The ground bass always sounds like it may rush, like any second the pianist could speed up and leave the other pianist behind but it never does. The voices often trade parts and dance back and forth. With the treble line taking off suddenly, ending the ground bass line. The last section has question chords, and unresolved lines as a relationship starts to lose the new lover buzz and falls into a steady rhythm. Some may feel that the relationship is ending, that the two pianos don’t sound the same as they used to together. But really the two pianos have found their music. They don’t need to experiment with different rhythms, keys, or time signatures. They know what sounds good together, they can continue to make music forever.

This concert was filmed by Reinhard Hölker, who also held a scholarship at the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede. The Argentine first performance was given by Cecilia Strack on 17th December 2003 at the Conservatorio de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, during a monographic concert (Compositions for Piano by Juan MarÃa Solare) organised by the Professors Silvia Dabul and Manuel Massone. The title is a pan in Spanish: Blues in E minor / Blues in me. At some moment I had a dream related with this piece. I cannot recall exactly when or where, but it must have been during 2003; any case not later. Possibly I've written it down somewhere, I will find it. Reconstructed by memory: It was an open-air concert, maybe in Worpswede. The audience sits down in banks around tables, eating; it is a kind of party. A music sounds that comes familiar to me. I recognized the Blues en mÃ. A young lady is performing it, whom I don't absolutely know. I ask myself: How could this lady get the score? She have possibly found it on the internet. And actually it was this dream that ended up convincing me to put some of my scores in Internet, beginning with the Blues en mÃ. According to my registers, I sent the sheet music to Mariano Rocca (webmaster of compositores e intérpretes, www.ciweb.com.ar) on 2nd November 2003 (ergo, this dream must have occurred before). Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127872). Incidental music composed for piano duet (4-hands) in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This piano duet developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. This 2-hands piano version is fairly difficult and requires large stretches at times, but for those who like a challenge it is well worth it. However, we decided it would be good to provide 4-hands versions as well, which are easier to perform and also available on this site. The original stories behind the movements are: 1. Marie for shame - based on a setting of the poem Marie, vous estes paresseuse - Marie for shame you keep a-bed too long, you must get up and enjoy life. 2. Nocturne is basically a segue to the first movement, in which Marie yawns and goes back to sleep! The harmonies are rich and yet somnolent. 3. Camp David is a sprightly number based on the Yiddish folksong Ikh bin a meidel in de joren - I am a maiden come of age and I am looking for a husband. 4. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. The sound samples are electronic previews. In the case of the 4-hands versions, the pdf files include the score and also separate piano parts. The original string quintets are also available on this site.

This 2-hands piano version is fairly difficult and requires large stretches at times, but for those who like a challenge it is well worth it. However, we decided it would be good to provide 4-hands versions as well, which are easier to perform and also available on this site. The original stories behind the movements are: 1. Marie for shame - based on a setting of the poem Marie, vous estes paresseuse - Marie for shame you keep a-bed too long, you must get up and enjoy life. 2. Nocturne is basically a segue to the first movement, in which Marie yawns and goes back to sleep! The harmonies are rich and yet somnolent. 3. Camp David is a sprightly number based on the Yiddish folksong Ikh bin a meidel in de joren - I am a maiden come of age and I am looking for a husband. 4. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. The sound samples are electronic previews. In the case of the 4-hands versions, the pdf files include the score and also separate piano parts. The original string quintets are also available on this site.

Though it uses the dotted eighth note-sixteenth note figure in the notation, the coordination between the hands is always on the beat making it easier to learn. It includes the verse, chorus and middle rap-like sections. The middle section melody rhythm is not performed with the strict dotted -eight note rhythm as notated but more like a swinging eight notes. (In Spanish you have different declinations for masculine and femenine adjectives). The masculine version is entrador. - Second, entradora can be understood in this context as a substantivized adjective, i.e. a word that is actually an adjective, but is used as if it were a noun, like if I say Now I will play 'Entradora'. Unlike the narratives concerning the death of Hercules, and his transformation into a god, and the dispute between Ajax and Ulysses over the weapons of Achilles, the story of Jason's capture of the Golden Fleece provided Dittersdorf with few opportunities for genuine pictorial writing. His explanation for the piano second theme in the first movement seems a little glib – it is, after all, a favourite device of his in non-programmatic works as well but Medea's beautiful soliloquy in the second movement, assigned here to the primo part and in all probability to a wind solo in the original, is as effective as anything in the extant orchestral scores of the Ovid symphonies. His choice of a Ciaconna for the Finale is not only highly appropriate given the heroic theme of the work, but also neatly solves the problem of how to end the symphony unconventionally in the absence of a transformation scene of the kind found in the other symphonies. Yet again, one marvels at Dittersdorf 's powerful creative imagination. The parts are marked carefully although Dittersdorf is not over-detailed in his instructions to the performers. The occasional copying errors provide insufficient evidence to determine whether the parts were copied from a piano score or prepared directly from the composer's full orchestral score. Little editorial work has been necessary to prepare this edition. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout and, where missing from the source, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. Like most eighteenth-century sources, the manuscript is at times inconsistent in its notation of appoggiature ; these too have been standardised to minimise confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Allan Badley.

The theme is quiet and simple, yet as the variations begin adding rhythms, melodies and textures, various musical styles, characters and dramatic expressions appear. When certain variations take on characteristics of jazz or salsa, audience members might even forget that they are still hearing the same basic chord structure. This piece is written so that almost any number of players can take turns performing it on either one, or two pianos. When fewer players perform the piece, one pianist can play two or three of the easier parts simultaneously. The minimum number of performers needed is four, but to facilitate the playing of cross rhythms, some groups may prefer 5 or 6 players in some variations. The music is written on 5 separate staves with suggestions of where and how to rotate players in and out of the performance, but performers should feel free to divide the parts between themselves in any way that works for them.
