Passacaglia (2000-2012) duet 6 minutes This piece also exists in versions for organ (my original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001). The piano duet version was finally completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.

FarewellA fairy tale full of inspiration written by a child was the stimulus for the creation of this polytonal work for orchestra. With humor and innocence, piquant orchestration and cinematic use of the sound, the work is dedicated to the child, Michalis Tillianakis and to Eleftherios Geitonas, director of Geitonas School who gave the idea for this project. The work has been transcribed for piano, 4 hands op.34b, for the Duo Pianismo recital in Benetatou Cultural Center of Psihiko in 2010 and for wind quintet op.34c for the Q innegal Wind Quintet Concerts in Athens in 2011 (Attikon OdeionConservatory, Art Gallery Café, Athens, Perigiali Theater, Korinthos). Excerpts of the work has been transcribed for Chamber Orchestra op.34d and performed by Psychiko Youth Orchestra conducted by the composer at Arssakeion Educational Institute Theater in 2016.

Chaque pièce, vendue à l’unité, a fait l’objet d’un travail éditorial attentif, tant sur le plan de l’établissement du texte musical que de sa gravure, afin de garantir aux musiciens les conditions indispensables aux plaisirs tirés du commerce fréquent de ces œuvres.<br><br>Les partitions sont proposées sous la forme d’ouvrages traditionnels (feuillets papier), et disponibles également par téléchargement.<br><br><br><br>En janvier 1874, Grieg collabore avec le dramaturge Henrik Ibsen, lui offrant la composition de la musique d'accompagnement de sa pièce de théâtre Peer Gynt. Ayant besoin d'argent, il accepte ce travail qu'il mène avec peine, mais qui doit à son insu assurer une grande partie de sa gloire internationale. L'oeuvre est jouée sous les feux de la rampe à Oslo le 24 février 1876. Sur ses 23 numéros qu'il compose, il en choisit quatre en 1888, pour une première suite d'orchestre, et cinq en 1891 pour une seconde, mais la dernière pièce est vite abandonnée.<br> La grotte du roi de la montagne est un morceau que nous connaissons tous. Son pouvoir évocateur n'a pas échappé au publicitaire qui, pour accompagner une situation haletante, l'utilise en bande son.<br> La première suite s'achève sur ce célèbre passage et nous ouvre le volet de la deuxième suite. Cet extrait est une transcription fidèle pour piano 4 mains, avec la partie droite plus facile, pour permettre aux débutants de jouer ce morceau, accompagnés d’un pianiste plus avancé. C’est une marche assez marquée en la mineur à quatre temps. Le thème prend au fur et à mesure son essor, avant de gagner tout le piano symphonique jusqu'à la frénésie qui atteint son paroxysme dans les dernières mesures.<br> Polyphonie, onirisme et frénésie, cet extrait tout à fait saisissant combine grâce, exaltation et sentiments.
