2018 New ArrangeMe Song Contest Entry
This arrangement of classic Danny Elfman is for piano duet. It can be played in piano 4-hands format or on two pianos. Performance time is between 2 and 3 minutes in length. This arrangement is suitable for upper level intermediate to advanced pianists. The primo part in particular is a more challenging part. Both performers will have opportunities to perform the melody and accompanimental figures. Hand crossing between players is a unique feature employed in the middle section. The PDF includes a score as well as primo and secondo parts. Parts align so that each page begins on the same measure to facilitate page turns.

Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127872). Incidental music composed for piano duet (4-hands) in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This piano duet developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

The Argentine first performance was given by Cecilia Strack on 17th December 2003 at the Conservatorio de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, during a monographic concert (Compositions for Piano by Juan MarÃa Solare) organised by the Professors Silvia Dabul and Manuel Massone. The title is a pan in Spanish: Blues in E minor / Blues in me. At some moment I had a dream related with this piece. I cannot recall exactly when or where, but it must have been during 2003; any case not later. Possibly I've written it down somewhere, I will find it. Reconstructed by memory: It was an open-air concert, maybe in Worpswede. The audience sits down in banks around tables, eating; it is a kind of party. A music sounds that comes familiar to me. I recognized the Blues en mÃ. A young lady is performing it, whom I don't absolutely know. I ask myself: How could this lady get the score? She have possibly found it on the internet. And actually it was this dream that ended up convincing me to put some of my scores in Internet, beginning with the Blues en mÃ. According to my registers, I sent the sheet music to Mariano Rocca (webmaster of compositores e intérpretes, www.ciweb.com.ar) on 2nd November 2003 (ergo, this dream must have occurred before). Conjeturas sistemáticas (Systematic conjectures) for piano four hands A piece composed in Bremen (North Germany) between 8th and 10th March 2013, about 4 minutes long, and dedicated to Mario GarcÃa Acevedo in memoriam (who died on March 6, 2013 in Buenos Aires). The title alludes to a phrase that Mario GarcÃa Acevedo said en passant during a lecture in SADAIC remembering the twentieth anniversary of the death of Rodolfo Caracciolo: True science is a set of systematic and ordered suspicions. I altered this thought slightly, because systematic suspicions seemed to me a more suitable title for a detective novel. Musically speaking, this piece uses modulating pandiatonism, a technique that I used in several other pieces as well. Mario GarcÃa Acevedo was one of those few people who can be said to have been wise in the most complete and overwhelming sense of the word. He was one of my teachers at the (ex) National Conservatory of Music, I no longer remember teacher of what, because he was the kind of person who was an integral teacher, not of this or that. I had the pleasure of performing the European premiere of his work Amanecer in Bremen in 2008. Mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 30th January 2017, shortly after knowing about the death of Uwe Kolkmeyer, musician and caricaturist to whom it is dedicated in memoriam. The title refers to a thought by Carl Sagan: planet earth is a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. An old idea that, of course, was not expressed by him for the first and only time. In Sufism exists an allegory (attributed to Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi) according to which the essences of the possible beings do exist in the darkness before being manifested by the divine light, as the motes of dust suspended in the air in a darken room don't become visible until they are lit by a light ray. A certain optimistic atmosphere in this work may surprise, the opposite of what is usually associated with death. In my works the tonality of A major often expresses consolation. Selma Hande Gade (a Turkish pianist that lives in Denmark), with whom we had discussed possible titles for this work, recorded a home video in March 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtzhHqB_Nb4 After listening to this recording, Luis Alberto Vittor wrote a report on this work for the blog Analecta Literaria (https://actaliteraria.blogspot.com), it will be published soon. The written range is kept mostly within the staff and the appropriate performance range of pitches on the keyboard is achieved by octave displacement, i.e. the Primo part is performed an octave higher than written and the Secondo an octave lower. As the performance range extends beyond that of a 61-note keyboard, an acoustic piano or 88-note keyboard is required if both players are to perform on the same instrument. Another performance option is to use two 61-note keyboards and use the transpose function to displace the parts by an octave (up for Primo, down for Secondo).
