AT THE EDGE OF A SPIRAL - for Piano Four-Hands (2004) DURATION: 10 Minutes PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: At the Edge of a Spiral for one piano, four hands is a short journey of a built intensity. It is based on few fragments, motives that are lit in different light each time. The piece starts slow, but increases its intensity and speed as it progresses, utilizing the same motives. While composing the piece, I heard about a young man that threw himself to the river. I tried to imagine that went in his mind and what brought to this dead-end. And again the idea of a built intensity, obsessive and uncompromising came to my mind. At the very end of the piece, there is a sudden drop of intensity followed by a music box passage, as if describing what is going on in the person's mind right after the jump, right after reaching the edge of his life's spiral. At the Edge of a Spiral was written and dedicated for the Silver-Garburg Piano Duo - Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg. It was funded by the generous support of Miriam and Eliezer Benbassat. Rather, it is a kind of historical re-construction; one that imagines how a typical piano rag of before 1905 would have sounded when performed by a skillful vernacular pianist as a virtuosic improvisation. A Million Buffalo Roam presents Tom Turpin's Buffalo Rag, Home On the Range, and the Star-Spangled Banner as an extended virtuosic display. It is a representation of a little-documented performance practice. After improvisatory passages on the three themes of The Buffalo Rag are heard individually, they are combined with the tunes of Home On the Range and the Star-Spangled Banner, including one passage in which Home On the Range and the Star-Spangled Banner are played simultaneously, combined with the accompaniment patterns of Buffalo Rag. This work may be performed as a piano duet, piano duo, or piano ensemble. It is also published as a Conductor's Score, with Primo and Secondo combined in one four-staff system.

Unlike the narratives concerning the death of Hercules, and his transformation into a god, and the dispute between Ajax and Ulysses over the weapons of Achilles, the story of Jason's capture of the Golden Fleece provided Dittersdorf with few opportunities for genuine pictorial writing. His explanation for the piano second theme in the first movement seems a little glib – it is, after all, a favourite device of his in non-programmatic works as well but Medea's beautiful soliloquy in the second movement, assigned here to the primo part and in all probability to a wind solo in the original, is as effective as anything in the extant orchestral scores of the Ovid symphonies. His choice of a Ciaconna for the Finale is not only highly appropriate given the heroic theme of the work, but also neatly solves the problem of how to end the symphony unconventionally in the absence of a transformation scene of the kind found in the other symphonies. Yet again, one marvels at Dittersdorf 's powerful creative imagination. The parts are marked carefully although Dittersdorf is not over-detailed in his instructions to the performers. The occasional copying errors provide insufficient evidence to determine whether the parts were copied from a piano score or prepared directly from the composer's full orchestral score. Little editorial work has been necessary to prepare this edition. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout and, where missing from the source, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. Like most eighteenth-century sources, the manuscript is at times inconsistent in its notation of appoggiature ; these too have been standardised to minimise confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Allan Badley.
